Purpose : Primarily to support Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures courses leading to degrees of Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages and Literatures. There is a General university Requirement for graduation for students in the College of Liberal Arts for one year of foreign language at the university level, although this requirement has small impact on the Library collection. Two courses, Germanic Civilization (GER 315) and Contemporary Culture and Society (GER 317) are taught in English. However, GER 315 will not be taught after Fall, 1998. GER 317 will then be the only course taught in English. The collection seeks to support many of the diverse requirements of faculty research. Some attention is given to providing a German language recreational and informational reading experience through minimal purchases in current fiction and through subscription to a very small number of popular magazines and several newspapers.

Nature and Environment in Modern German Literature a research project funded by Project Research Questions This research project, funded by a Research Grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB), is due to run until September 2005. The project aims to review the ways in which nature is represented in German literature between the onset of industrialization and the present day, tracing the part played by creative writers in the emergence of ecological consciousness, and to produce the first comprehensive account of the interrelationship between literature in German and ecological thought and politics.
The project is led by Professor Colin Riordan (University of Newcastle) and Dr Axel Goodbody (University of Bath), with Dr Simon Meacher as Research Associate (based at the University of Newcastle). The research team also includes two PhD students - Katharine Griffiths (University of Newcastle), and Aniela Morris (University of Bath) - who are working on related areas, thus contributing to the ecocritical reassessment of literature in German which is the aim of the project as a whole.

The author was a man of poetic power, for unlike Ottfried, who shortly after him wrote the rhymed Gospel Harmony, in High German, he produced a work of real poetic inspiration. His work was difficult. The Saxons had been forcibly converted to Christianity by Charlemagne only a few years before. They were a rude, vigorous and warlike race, loyal to their chiefs, without culture and learning, who cared little for religious speculations. To interest such men in the story of the Divine Teacher and His doctrines was of course difficult. The poet therefore adopted a bold expedient. He represents Christ not so much as a Divine Teacher but as the Prince of Peace, the Sovereign Ruler, who gathers about him his loyal vassals, the Apostles. With their aid He founds His kingdom upon earth, and appears throughout His career as the beneficent Lord of men. His life is related from His birth to His ascension in accordance with the Gospel narrative. Just as the atmosphere of the masterpieces of the great
