ARTFL Project
The University of Chicago's Project for American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language (whew...no wonder they use an acronym!) was created as a database of words from written French. It now contains over 150 million words ranging from the 17th to the 20th centuries. A great tool for French scholars and researchers, as well as lovers of language.

COOPERATIVE LEARNING
IN MODERN LANGUAGES
Welcome to my page on cooperative learning in the Modern Language class and thank you for visiting. There are many activities here for you to enjoy. All of the small group cooperative materials are yours to use freely in your language class - I believe in sharing with others what it has been my good fortune to learn. Please enjoy! It took a little while to create these materials and behind the words and the thoughts you see on your screen is the person who placed them there. I would love to hear back from you either through the guest book or by you dropping me a line when you have the time. My name is Pete Jones and I used to teach French at Anderson Collegiate in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. Whitby is about 30 miles east of Toronto. This June 2002, I retired after having taught French for almost thirty years. I had the opportunity over the past several years to play with cooperative learning. The links below will provide you access to materials I have either developed or learned about to get this instructional strategy up and running in the Modern Language class. Each of the titles below has a brief explanation of the activity.

Course Pages: German 101 German 102 German 203 German 204 ... PRINT VERSION The Grammar-Translation Method
The grammar-translation method of foreign language teaching is one of the most traditional methods, dating back to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was originally used to teach 'dead' languages (and literatures) such as Latin and Greek, and this may account for its heavy bias towards written work to the virtual exclusion of oral production. As Omaggio comments, this approach reflected "the view of faculty psychologists that mental discipline was essential for strengthening the powers of the mind." (Omaggio 89) Indeed, the emphasis on achieving 'correct' grammar with little regard for the free application and production of speech is at once the greatest asset and greatest drawback to this approach.
The major characteristic of the grammar-translation method is, precisely as its name suggests, a focus on learning the rules of grammar and their application in translation passages from one language into the other. Vocabulary in the target language is learned through direct translation from the native language, e.g. with vocabulary tests such as:
    the house = das Haus
    the mouse = die Maus
Very little teaching is done in the target language. Instead, readings in the target language are translated directly and then discussed in the native language, often precipitating in-depth comparisons of the two languages themselves. Grammar is taught with extensive explanations in the native language, and only later applied in the production of sentences through translation from one language to the other, e.g.

The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) has produced a scheme of work for MFL at Key Stage 2. The scheme of work is designed as a framework to help schools develop and amend their own schemes. In this section, you will find schemes of work and lesson plans which teachers are currently using, for German, Spanish and French. All of the examples of schemes of work shown in the NACELL best practice guide are based on the DfES/QCA Key Stage 2 scheme of work. Teachers have adapted the QCA scheme of work to fit their particular timetables and schools. The QCA units and Teacher's guide are available on-line on the DfES Standards website The QCA scheme comprises an overview and twelve units for French, Spanish and German. There is also a Teacher's guide, which contains valuable practical advice on setting up a scheme and on teaching and learning. Many teaching suggestions, games and activities are listed in the Teacher's guide. The scheme of work and Teacher's Guide are also available direct from QCA at:
