Your Pet Gerbil
Remember
Gerbils are bright, inquisitive, rewarding to observe, clean and cheap to feed. However they do require commitment and regular attention
A gerbil needs
- Companionship - to be with other gerbils - Daily feeding on a diet of mixed grain and washed fruit and vegetables, with occasional sunflower seeds. - To have a constant supply of fresh water from a drip-feedbottle with metal spout - A gerbilarium to live and burrow in (a large aquarium tank with a wire mesh cover) - The gerbilarium to be kept indoors at an even room temperature, out of direct sunlight

Gerbils Gerbil Facts Scientific Name Meriones unguiculatus Life Span Environment Temperature Range Relative Humidity Range Breeding Range Estrous Cycle Gestation Period
Litter Size Weaning Age 21 days The Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) is a small rodent native to the desert regions of Mongolia and northeastern China. Gerbils are burrowing, social animals which are active both during the day and night. Their burrows are composed of elaborate tunnels with multiple entrances, nesting rooms and food compartments. The native color variety is agouti, mixed brown with dark pigmented skin, light brown to white ventrum (chest and abdomen) and darker dorsal (back) coat. Other color varieties that exist include black, white and cinnamon. Color combinations of black or brown with a white band over the chest area are also common. Gerbils have a marking scent gland, which appears as a tan colored hairless area in the middle of their abdomen.
The gerbil is a curious, friendly and nearly odorless rodent, which makes it a very popular pet. They have adapted well to captivity and tend to be relatively free of naturally occurring infectious diseases. These rodents rarely bite or fight, are easy to keep clean and care for and are relatively easy to handle. These qualities make the gerbil an ideal pet as well as laboratory rodent.

Care of Small Pocket Pets
Pocket Pets include guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats. The care of each of these pets is similar. Each require a roomy, safe cage appropriate for their size and climbing habits. The cage can be bedded with wood shavings or shredded paper and food should be supplied in suspended feeders or heavy crocks that can't be tipped. It is best to accustom these pets to drink from a water bottle with a sipper tube to prevent water from spilling in the cage. Guinea Pigs Guinea pigs are native to the Andes Mountains of South America, but are commonly seen here as pets and research animals. They are related to chinchillas and porcupines. Guinea pigs make excellent pets if handled gently and seldom bite. They can be housed in a large aquarium or other open top enclosure as they seldom climb. They are best kept at 65-79 F. Guinea pigs are fed commercial pellets. Because they, like humans need vitamin C, they can be fed one small handful of kale or cabbage or one quarter orange daily.

Numerous studies have shown the beneficial effects of animals on the health and adjustment of individuals, including children. School counselors can use small animals such as hamsters, gerbils, and guinea pigs as an effective adjunct intervention. Pocket pets help build rapport, enhance the counseling relationship, and facilitate work on issues including feelings, responsibility, grief, and attachment. "What happened to Harry?" Brothers Charles and Joe, reenrolling at my school for their fifth elementary placement, had stopped by the counseling office on their first morning back to check on an old friend. The boys, who had surrendered their own pets over the course of several family moves, were saddened to learn that Harry the hamster had died of advanced age. At the same time, they were intrigued by my newest resident, a dwarf hamster named Ginger. Charles immediately volunteered to take Ginger under his care, begging to take him home over spring break. His offer dovetailed perfectly with my own plans: I wanted to check in with Charles regularly, I hoped to cultivate his emerging sense of responsibility, and, not incidentally, I needed a hand with hamster chores.

    Caring For Your Gerbils
Here is my advice to those considering getting gerbils or those who are newcomers to gerbil keeping. If you want further advice, see the Gerbil FAQ Topics: What Is A Gerbil?
    Things to Consider First

    Proper Gerbil Housing

    Gerbil Feeding
    ...
    Other Gerbil Owners
What Is A Gerbil? A gerbil is a rodent halfway between a rat and a mouse in size. They're usually 2-4 oz, and have a slightly different facial shape than a mouse or rat. Their long tails are also covered in fur and end in a bit of a tuft. Their eyes are deep black or ruby red, and they come in dozens of different colors, from regular agouti, to black, to siamese, to even blue! Gerbils make fun and entertaining pets for both young and old. Gerbils are fun to watch. Their antics can entertain you for hours. They are also incredibly friendly. They can be taught to climb up your shoulder and can sit there, or on your head ;) I think gerbils make the BEST pets! Gerbils require a minimum of care. Their homes take up little space, they are low-maintanance because they create little odor, and they do not need frequent vet visits. They also are not as prone to tumors or respiratory problems as, say, mice and rats. They are also very friendly, social, and rarely bite, as is the case with some rodents that will remain anonymous. Things to Consider First Before you get your gerbils, you have to decide just what you're looking for. How many do you want? What colors do you prefer? Do you prefer a certain gender? Do you want to breed?

Survey of Pet Animals in the Classroom, Purdue University
Pet Care Trust, February, 2000 The Pet Care Trust funded a project conducted by Dr. Alan Beck, Prof. of Animal Ecology, School of Veterinary Medicine, and Dr. Anthony Rud, Jr., Assoc. Dean, School of Education, Purdue University, to survey pet animals in classroom. In 1998, 1,999 surveys were sent to elementary school teachers in Indiana. A total of 428 responses (21.4%) were completed and returned. Most of the surveys came from teachers in small cities (71.8%), with the balance from farm areas or cities less than 25,000 population. Of this sample, 26.6% of the teachers kept one or more resident animals in their classroom, and 46% of teachers who did not keep resident pets, did allow animals to visit the classroom. A wide variety of animals were found in Indiana elementary classrooms. Mammals include chinchillas, gerbils, Guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rats, hedge hogs and rabbits. The only birds found were parakeets, but reptiles included, anoles, iguanas, legless lizards, snakes (garter, corn and boa) and box turtles. Amphibians include frogs, toads and salamanders, while fish included goldfish, Betas, guppies and other tropical fish. Invertebrates include ants, butterflies, cockroaches, crickets, mealworms, hermit crabs, crawfish, snails, spiders and a sea anemone. Teachers responding to the survey discussed the benefits and the downsides of resident animals in the classroom. Examples: 1. With the death of a gerbil, the students mourned the loss by writing and drawing, and then a funeral was conducted where 5-6 students said something nice about the gerbil and then sang the school song; 2. A snake escaped from it's habitat and was later found in the principal's office.

Mongolian Gerbils as Pets
Introduction
Mongolian Gerbils are one of what I've called "the big four" of rodent pets (hamsters, mice, rats, and gerbils). They have been kept as pets for roughly 30 years and are available in a wide variety of colors. The Mongolian Gerbil is the species most commonly kept as pets and unless otherwise noted the term "gerbil" almost always refers to this species. Other species available as pets are Duprasi or Fat Tailed Gerbils, Shaws Jirds, and a few West African Sspecies.
Positives
Gerbils have many features that make them excellent pets. Probably their greatest advantage is that they are desert animals and have a very efficient use of food and water. The benefit of this for a pet owner is that they produce little urine and their cages do not need to be cleaned as frequently as other rodent pets. Another major positive to gerbils is that they are absolutely fearless. People have speculated that this may be due to a limited number of predators in their home environment or that nothing in their "pet" environment pushes their buttons. Since the animals are not afraid, they are generally easier to tame, and their response to new stimuli is generally to explore (they are very curious) or flee rather than to bite.
Negatives
The only negative I can think of with gerbils is their incessant gnawing and scratching. This makes it impossible to use plastic cages. If left in a plastic cage for permanent housing, they will eventually gnaw their way out. If left in one for a short time, they will usually scratch the sides to an extent that within a few weeks, the plastic will be sufficiently scratched that you will not be able to see through it.

Cleansing Your Ferret
General Information Although gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice and rats belong to the rodent family, each species has its own particular habits and specific needs.
Choosing a Cage Choosing the proper cage will not only increase your enjoyment of the animal but also play an important role in its health. Ask your pet supplies dealer to recommend the type of cage to use, and tell you how to set it up and equip it with the proper accessories. The pet store owner can also recommend a variety of natural, non-toxic, absorbent shavings and other bedding and nesting materials for small animals. Placement of the cage is important. Since rodents are highly susceptible to chilling and overheating, keep the cage in a well-ventilated room but away from drafts, air conditioning vents, radiators, or windows that are hit by direct sunlight. You should also ensure that other pets, specifically cats or dogs, cannot jab their paws or noses in the cage or otherwise gain access it. Return to Top Cleaning the Cage It is extremely important to keep the cage hygienically clean because rodent urine is not only unpleasant smelling but also, and more importantly, a primary source of allergens. Although rodents are naturally clean in the wild, when they are confined to a cage, urine and fecal matter accumulate quickly and cause a strong odor. In addition, certain rodents, particularly males that have matured sexually, emit a strong-smelling odor from their scent glands.

This story has not yet been published in paper form. But it is available together with other stories and with the second edition of The Lizard of Oz on CD ROM at a single diskette from http://store.yahoo.com/samizdat/lizofoznowan.html Responses from readers of this story Bobby knew that fathers are pushovers when it comes to pets, especially gerbils. Sure, Dad talks tough, "There will be no pets in this house ever. And that's final!" But just warm him up a bit with a trip to the zoo, then a visit to a friend with some brand-new baby gerbils. All it takes is preparation, timing and technique, and suddenly he'd be saying, "But just one gerbil would be so lonely all by himself." Dad would be the one delighted at the birth of new gerbils and unable to let any of them go. He'd be the one running to the store for more pet stuff. Bobby had heard all about this weakness of fathers from his friend Jimmy at school. He had seen Jimmy's house turned into a maze of pet cages and tubes. And he knew he could make the same thing happen at his house. Yes, nine-year-old Bobby was quite proud of himself, sitting in the car with his sister Heather and brother Mikey on their way to the zoo. He knew just what to do and how to do it to start a whole gerbil adventure.
