Care of Rodents
Below is some basic care information for rodents. Please consult detailed care manuals for these animals, websites or check with your veterinarian. Hamsters, gerbils, rats and mice are members of the rodent family. They have long upper and lower incisors (front teeth) that grow continuously. All rodents require material to gnaw, in order to keep their incisors sharp and worn to the proper length. Hay, cardboard tubes and wood (apple, pear, willow) are all suitable for your rodent to chew on. Generally, rodents are more active at night and can be quite noisy! Housing A cage measuring 60 x 30 x 30 cm. is a minimum size for hamsters, gerbils and mice. Rats require larger habitats. Absorbent materials such as white wood shavings should be used to line the cage bottom. Gerbils and hamsters like to dig and burrow so adding a layer of peat moss allows them to exercise this behaviour. Clean the cage often at least once a week. Inside the cage, rodents should have a cardboard or wooden house, toys such as plastic tubes and small boxes, some shredded tissue for nest building and an exercise wheel for smaller rodents. Secure cages are a necessity as rodents, especially hamsters and rats, are real escape artists.

by
Critter Adventures (ARA) - When your youngster comes home from school all excited about having a class pet and begs you for an animal of their own, you may want to give their request some serious consideration. Numerous studies have shown that animals teach children lessons they'll carry with them for a lifetime: responsibility, friendship, compassion and respect for nature.
"When your child begs you for an animal of their own, you may want to consider their request. Studies show that animals teach children lessons they'll carry with them for life: responsibility, friendship, compassion and respect for nature." While cats, dogs and fish are the most popular pets, they are also a lot of work, which may explain why small animals like mice, rats, hamsters, gerbils, snakes and lizards are gaining in popularity. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturer's Association (APPMA) National Pet Owners Survey, 9.7 million U.S. households now have a small pet in them 4.1 million of them are reptiles. If you're considering joining the crowd, here's a guide that will get you started, starting with some basic information about the animals.

Pet Care Here are some tips on taking care of your pet! Most are from a book about pets, I was reading, called 'pets: part of the family,' published by Hinkler Books Pty Ltd. Dogz
  • Remember, always go to the vet if you're worried about your pet.
  • Always spay or neuter or pet if you don't want to breed it.
  • Try not to feed your pet canned food, unless it's a science brand. Dry food is best. If your pet is on a canned food diet, transfer over to dry food gradually. Don't forget to feed the pet once a day only (unless you want a fat pooch on your hands). Suggested treats are two dice-sized cubes of hard cheese, two or three slices of raw carrot, a piece of sourdough bread, one-half cup of cooked chicken (no bones), a meatball or bit of cooked hamburger, a few sections of an orange, a few slices of apple, rawhide chews, commercial biscuits or jerky. If you would like a recipe for 'The Best Dog Biscuit Recipe Ever,' click here
  • In summer, place a couple of ice cubes in your dog's drinking water.
  • If you are going to start an exercise plan with a dog (especially dogs over six years old, are obese or have a history of heart trouble) consult your vet. When you do start your regular walks and exercise 20 minutes of continuous walking three times a week should be good -however, five times a week for 20 minutes each time will see your dog looking great! Walking on sidewalks may leave your pet's paws bruised - just take a few days of exercise off if this happens. However, don't be dissuaded, concrete can help wear down the length of your pet's claws - a good thing! After exercise, 12 ounces of water should be available and a drink during the outing when you're out for more than 30 minutes in 70 degrees Fahrenheit is a must.

Eva's Home Page Eva's Cavy Page Eva's Rat Page Eva's Natal Rat Page Differing views on pet care:
I think it is very interesting that people have so many different views on the topic of pet care. I have been thinking about this a lot. Some people I know use the smallest cages they possibly can and they give their animals the cheapest and easiest-to-feed kind of food to the animals, in order to be able to keep as many animals as possible for breeding purposes. Some of these people, when asked, of course have totally other views on pet care than the person with just a few highly beloved pets. This is exactly as with dog owners. Some dog owners think it is totally ok to leave the dog alone all day, and take it out on a 5 minute pee walk once in a while. Other dog owners would feel that it is totally unthinkable to leave such a highly social animal as a dog alone all day, and would also take the dog out for long walks every day. Some dog owner's fool themselves by getting two dogs and think that two dogs may be happier together in the absence of their owner. But two lonely dogs are just two lonely dogs, waiting for their owner. It is better to pay somebody to walk the dog during the day, or even pay somebody (a human companion) to

    Gerbils as the perfect pets
    • To have gerbils is to have a big aquarium where they live and enjoy life. In order to get your gerbils tame you need to handle them a little every day. They don't like to be picked up by the tail. But gerbils actually loved being petted , so don't forget to pet them even if only for a minute a day.
    • Gerbils are healthy animals and thrive in large aquaria with lots of hay, toilet rolls and bedding material . My gerbils usually have wooden houses too. They chew at their houses and hide their babies in them.
    • Gerbils can become extremely tame and are really perfect pets. Gerbils do not smell and are extremely inexpensive to keep and feed. My gerbils can sit on my shoulder and never jumps away. The younger gerbils have a tendency to be active all the time and they seem to be almost unable to sit still for long. But they do calm down with age, and an older gerbil may be very tame, coming up to you when you talk to it, loves to sit in your hand and be petted, and so on - it may even fall asleep in your hand! It is hard to imagine how tame gerbils can become if you have not experienced it yourself!
    • You only need two gerbils to fill a big aquarium, no more and no less. Gerbils are highly territorial, and need lots of space at the same time as they are very social animals, so pleace keep your gerbils in pairs.

    The Right Pet for You

Gerbils are bright and inquisitive, and fun to observe, but they need your commitment and regular attention. Before getting any pet, you should think very hard about whether you can provide everything it needs, including love. What do Gerbils need?
1 Companionship - to be with other gerbils.
2 Daily feeding on a diet of mixed grain and washed fruit and vegetables, with occasional sunflower seeds and peanuts.
3 A constant supply of fresh, clean drinking water in a drip feed bottle with a metal spout.
4 A large home called a gerbilarium (like a big aquarium tank with a wire mesh cover) that is kept indoors in a warm place, out of direct sunlight.
5 Plenty of burrowing material (damp peat mixed with potting compost and chopped straw or hay) and clean white kitchen paper or soft hay for bedding.
6 Toys to play with, like cardboard tubes and wooden cotton reels.

Mice, Rats, Gerbills and Hamsters. These little sweeties are often chosen as pets for the first time animal guardian because they are relatively low maintenace and have gentle dispositions. Nutrition Commercial rodent pellets are available for Gerbils and Hamsters at pet stores. All four creatures have similar diets so if you have a rat, gerbil pellets are fine. For a more palatable diet, supplement the pellets with diced fruit and seeds, but don’t overdo it. These little guys have habit of filling up on the yummy stuff and ignoring the pellets, and eating that way will not satisfy their daily nutritional needs. Housing As the popularity of keeping small animals increases, more and more cages designed for them are appearing in pet stores all over. But, I recommend a glass aquarium with a screen cover. Ferrets - More like a cat than a rodent when it comes to care and maintenance. Rabbits - A hunny bunny can be a great pet if some basic needs are met.
