Caring for your Gerbil Gerbils are comparatively newcomers to the world of domestic pets. The species we recommend, Mongolian Gerbil, was first discovered in 1954 and has rapidly become established as a children's pet. Gerbils are friendly curious and animated. Properly handled they become tame and affectionate. They are happiest when kept in pairs as they are by nature "community" animals and a pair will usually pair for life if they are kept together all the time.
Two males or two females if brought at the same time will happily share a cage. A mixed pair will certainly breed.
A fully-grown Gerbil weighs 3-4ozs (80-100g). The average life span is 4-5 yrs. Housing
Your pet shop will help you to select a suitable cage. It should be roomy, escape proof, Gnaw proof and easy to clean.
A glass aquarium with a secure lid makes an ideal home.

pet gerbils are available in a variety of colors, including white, soft caramel and Do you have the time it takes to properly care for gerbils?
http://www.animed.org/gerbil_is_a_gerbil_right_for_you.htm
I. Gerbil: Is a Gerbil right for you? INDEX Could a clawed jird be the perfect pet for you? Nope, that isn't a typothe word "jird" translates as "large desert rodent," and it's another name for the Mongolian gerbil. If properly cared for, these curious and gentle critters can make wonderful animal companions. In the wild, gerbils are brownish-reddish-gray in color, which helps them blend in with their desert environment. Pet gerbils are available in a variety of colors, including white, soft caramel and all-black. Unlike other members of the rodent family (we're talking mice, rats and hamsters), gerbils have excellent vision. They measure in at about four inches, plus a tail of the same length, and have an average lifespan of 3 to 5 years. If you're thinking about getting a gerbil, you really should consider getting more than one. These social animals live in family communities in the wild, and their domestic counterparts will get lonely if kept by themselves. Please bring home at least a pair; opt for same-sex siblings if at all possible. As adult males tend to fight, ASPCA experts recommend two females for first-time gerbil parents. While most gerbils sold as pets are Mongolian gerbils, or Meriones unguiculatus, other species are sometimes available. However, please note that members of different species should NOT be kept together. Do you have the time it takes to properly care for gerbils? These curious charmers aren't the type of pets you can just feed, water and passively watch through the bars of a cage. Gerbils are easily hand-tamed and need supervised playtime out of the cage every day. Gentle by nature, gerbils seldom bite if properly handledbut if you don't think you'd feel comfortable handling them, it's best to consider another pet.

Ready to set up your new pets home? Your gerbils don t require much in the Also, take care to put cage furniture and food dishes back in the same spot.
http://www.animed.org/gerbil_housing.htm
I. Gerbil: Housing INDEX Ready to set up your new pets' home? Your gerbils don't require much in the way of decoration, but you will need to ensure that their cage is roomy and sturdy, with lots of bedding material so your little guys can dig to their hearts' content. A well-made cage and accessories are the most important investments you'll make for your pets. A ten-gallon aquarium with a wire-mesh top makes a good home for a pair of gerbils. If you plan to keep more than two gerbils, purchase a tank that's at least 15 gallonsand remember that it's always nice to buy the largest cage you can afford. We know that many caretakers go for cages with bars, such as those made of wire, but keep in mind that your gerbils will kick out the bedding as they dig, which will lead to an extended clean-up time for you. Plastic habitats with connecting tubes are okay, but your gerbils will probably scratch the tubes and sides of the cage, making it harder to see them; some gerbils have even been known to chew their way through the tunnels. Whatever type of cage you choose, be sure to place it in an area of the house that's away from direct sunlight and drafts. Now it's time to make your gerbils' new house feel like a home. Line the cage with extra bedding so your pets can do what they do bestand that's DIG! ASPCA experts recommend aspen shavings or a safe recycled paper bedding. Steer clear of cedar and pine shavings, as their fumes can irritate your pet's throat, lungs and nasal passages. Be sure to add some timothy hay or shredded paper so your little guys can make a cozy nest. And all gerbils need a place for sleeping and resting. You can fulfill this requirement with a medium-size clay flowerpot, a large-mouth jar or other sturdy container. Don't give 'em anything made of soft plastic or cardboard, which they'll simply chew to bits.

Download this Book and Save Hundreds on Vet Bills!
We all want our beloved rodents to be happy and healthy. This means paying the vet hundreds of dollars for exams, right? No! Ask any vet the care your rodent gets at home has far more effect on his health than any vet exam. In fact, most vets give out advice along with prescriptions advice that could have prevented the illness in the first place! Wouldn't you like to have that advice now, before you have to hear it from your vet? Rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs all have different needs. For instance, guinea pigs cannot metabolize vitamin C on their own, so you must provide it in their diet every day, or they can develop serious, and even fatal, health problems. Rats and mice don't have this problem, however. Understanding your rodent's diet needs is easy, will keep him healthier and happier, and can prevent expensive treatments in the future. Note: we are not saying you will never have to visit the vet again! Vet care is important to your pet's health. However, with the care techniques in this book, you can prevent a multitude of costly illnesses with just a little knowledge!

Although there are many different species of Gerbil or Jirds/Girds in the wild the one most commonly available as pets is the Mongolian Gerbil. This species was first brought into the United Kingdom in the 1930's and 40's to be used in laboratory experiments - whilst being bred under these conditions they were tamed and domesticated with the first specimens released to the public as pets in the 1950's. In the wild these very sociable animals live in family groups or colonies, in their burrow systems that contain, nesting and sleeping chambers, separate food stores and a latrine area. These animals are not only active during part of the night but have periods of activity in the early morning, late afternoon and evening. Their life span is about 3 years, although many will reach 4, and some even 5 years old. The most common colour for a gerbil is agouti; this name comes from the agouti animal of South America, and is an overall speckled Brown and grey. This is achieved by each single hair having different colours along its length which when combined produce the final coat colour. Over the years and with selective breeding these colours have been separated out to produce the wide variety of colours that are now available.

http://www.midwestexotichospital.com/html/care/gerb/care_gerb3.html
Gerbils Breeding - cont'd The gestation period of non-lactating gerbils is 24 to 26 days on average. A fertile postpartum estrus may result in pregnancy, with a gestation length of over 30 days when the female is nursing young. Litter size averages 4 to 6 pups, which are born blind and naked. Ears open at 3 to 7 days, hair coat develops at 7 to 10 days, incisors erupt at 12 to 14 days and eyes open at 14 to 20 days. Weaning occurs by the age of 21 days. The estrus cycle lasts 4 to 6 days with spontaneous ovulation. Monogamous pairs may produce a new litter every 30 to 40 days, for a total of 6 or 7 litters during their reproductive lives. The female gerbil is reproductively active until about 18 months of age. Males may continue to be fertile to at least 24 months of age.
Young gerbils are rarely abandoned or cannibalized. Some factors that may lead to abandonment include small litters, excessive handling of young, lack of nesting material and lack of an area for concealment of the nest. If a mother gerbil abandons a nest, fostering may be possible if the orphans and host litters were born within a few days of each other. Hand feeding of neonatal rodents is difficult and often unrewarding.
Non-Infectious Conditions
Epilepsy
The gerbil has a genetic tendency to develop epileptiform seizures. The occurrence rate for the general pet populace is 20 to 40%. These seizures may be initiated by fright, handling or exposure to a new environment. The attacks can be mild (slight shaking) to very severe (violent convulsive body jerking, erratic movements and collapse). The convulsions appear not to have any long-term effects. In some instances, however, death may result following very severe seizures, but this is rare. Anticonvulsant therapy is not indicated, and can cause more serious side effects than the seizures themselves. Frequent handling during the first few weeks of life and providing a stable environment with a complete, balanced diet can help suppress the seizures in genetically predisposed gerbils.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. A bat got into my house and may have bitten my dog. He has had his rabies shot. Is he safe from rabies, or should he get another shot? Rabies is a fatal virus that attacks the nervous system and is spread through the saliva of mammals, explains Maureen Carroll, D.V.M., an internist at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, a division of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It is usually transmitted through bite wounds. At this time it can only be confirmed by examining the suspect animal's brain. Bats are known to be carriers of the virus in New England. Rabies affects the central nervous system of animals and causes behavioral changes. Since bats are predominantly nocturnal, be especially wary if you see one during the day, in a place where they are not usually seen (such as in your home or on your lawn), or if it is unable to fly. It's never a good idea to handle wildlife, and this is certainly true in the case of bats.

Guinea Pigs
Guinea pigs are popular pets for many reasons. They are docile and friendly, and once tamed, they seem to enjoy interaction with their owners. They make ideal first pets for older children, because they are easy to care for and rarely bite. A guinea pig does not require a lot of space, so it is an ideal pet for a child's bedroom or for a person living in an apartment. The guinea pig's life span of 3-5 years is longer than that of smaller rodents such as hamsters, gerbils, rats, and mice. Another name for the guinea pig is "cavy" from its scientific name, Cavia porcellus. Guinea pigs are rodents from South America, which were initially tamed by the Incas of Peru. The most common varieties of guinea pigs found in pet stores today are the English shorthaired, the Peruvian longhaired, and the Abyssinian rough-haired. Newer strains of longhaired cavies include the smooth-coated Silkies and the rough-haired Woolies. Many guinea pigs kept as pets are actually "mixed breeds." The various types of guinea pigs can be found in numerous colors and color combinations. The guinea pig's long gestation period (length of pregnancy) of 59-72 days is similar to that of dogs and cats rather than the other members of the rodent family (e.g., rats, mice, hamsters, and gerbils) that typically have a 21-to-28 day gestation period. This longer period results in well-developed (precocial) offspring that have open eyes and full hair coats when born and eat solid food within several days. The average litter size is 2 to 4. The female guinea pig should be bred before the age of 6 months. After that time, pelvic structures fuse, and giving birth will be difficult if not impossible.

Type Warm blooded mammal in the rodent family. Diurnal, they are up during the day and sleep at night. Temperament Size A Gerbil's size is halfway between a rat and a mouse. About 2-4 oz Housing Clean-up Gerbils tend to eliminate in one area of the cage, keeping the rest of the cage fairly clean. The area where they eliminate should be cleaned every day. The rest of the bedding should be cleaned every 2-3 weeks depending on how many gerbils you are housing. The more gerbils you have in one unit the more you will have to clean it. Tanks should be allowed to thoroughly dry before new bedding is added and placing all of their toys and nesting material back in. Grooming Gerbils do not need humans to groom them as they groom themselves. Grooming not only keeps them clean, but it is also a part of their social structure. The dominant gerbil will often be seen grooming the submissive gerbil to assert their dominance, especially when two gerbils are first introduced. This behavior will continue throughout their relationship. Like all rodents, a gerbil's front teeth grow constantly. They must chew on things to keep their teeth filed down. Feeding Gerbil food can be found at your local store. They can also eat, timothy hay, alfalfa hay, sunsalted sunflower seeds, unsalted peanuts, Cheerios, Rice Krispies, apples, carrots, lettuce, dried bananas, dried kidney beans, dried lentils, dried lima beans and dried black-eyed peas. Keep in mind that sunflower seeds and peanuts are fatty and should be saved only as occasional treats. Cheerios, Rice Krispies, apples, carrots, and lettuce should also be considered a treat and given only occasionally. Foods which spoil should be removed after one day. A heavy dish that is not easily knocked over should be used. A 2 inch (5 cm.) high ceramic bowl will due nicely. Water should be provided at all times. Water should be given in a gravity driven bottle with a medal spout that hangs on the side. Water should be changed daily.
