Alternative Energy Sources
a research paper by Daniel Salama (PWC)
In today's environmentally conscious world, alternative energy sources are becoming a serious issue, and one that could help stem the tide of the depletion of non-renewable resources and the threat of global warming. In my essay, I will discuss the positives, negatives and the potential in Newfoundland of three important alternative energy sources: geothermal energy, solar power and biodiesel fuel. The first type of alternative energy I will discuss is geothermal energy. Geothermal energy takes the heat from the earth, and uses it to heat and cool houses, office buildings and other structures. Geothermal energy heats the water it touches which creates geological features such as geysers and hot springs. Geothermal energy is used mainly as a power supply to help generate electricity or as a heat source in households and industry. It has many advantages, both economically and environmentally, which make it a viable solution, but it also has certain flaws, as all alternative energy sources do. Economically its advantage is that it exists to a certain degree in many places. Therefore, it would help in reducing the necessity of depending on imported energy, which has recently affected our foreign policy, as well as our economy. It would also be a great

Western GeoPower With the price of crude oil charging through $40 U.S. a barrel to its highest level in more than 20 years, alternative energy companies that are listed on TSX Venture Exchange may soon attract new investor interest. Sharp increases in oil prices imply two developments that raise investment interest in the alternative energy sector. First, higher oil prices suggest that the global supply-demand balance is shifting and that more energy sources are needed to meet growing demand. It also suggests that higher energy prices are a longer term phenomenon that will improve the economics of more alternative energy technologies.

Overview The Yukon's energy system is dependent on imported petroleum products: heating oil, transportation fuel, diesel for the generators supplementing the hydro-electric grid and diesel for off-grid generators. Wood is used in many homes as the secondary heat source, but other energy resources remain largely undeveloped. These other resources include wood residues from sawmills, coal, wind, small hydro and local oil and gas. In addition to these resources, there are a number of alternative energy resources, which are described in this issue: solar, geothermal, refuse, peat and coal bed methane. The Yukon receives enough sunshine to make solar energy viable for approximately eight months of the year. Photovoltaics are being combined with other energy technologies by a number of remote households in the Yukon. This source of electricity is expected to become more economical as the rapid decrease in capital costs for photovoltaic systems continues. The Yukon's geothermal resource remains largely unknown, but there are numerous thermal springs throughout the territory. None of the springs has temperatures high enough for commercial electricity production, and most are located far from existing communities. Current use of the resource is limited to tourism and to keeping municipal water systems from freezing in two communities.

What is Geothermal Energy and How Can It Be Used?
Geothermal Energy The Earth's Temperatures Geothermal Resources Geothermal Resources in Canada ... Uses - Different Kinds of Geothermal Energy Systems
Geothermal Energy
Energy comes in many different forms. One form of energy is heat or "thermal" energy, which can be in the form of, for example, solar energy (from the sun); thermochemical energy (heat released from chemical reactions) and radiogenic energy (produced by radioactive decay). The Earth is a storehouse of energy that is produced internally by radiogenic heat production and long-term cooling of the planet. The surface of the Earth is also warmed by solar radiation. We refer to the Earth's energy as "Geothermal Energy". This energy is available to us for use in a variety of applications, including recreational use (hotsprings), direct use for heating, and power generation. Recent public interest in geothermal energy has however led to some confusion on the different forms of geothermal energy that are related to different types of geothermal resources. A complicating factor is that different people use different terms to describe essentially the same thing. Traditionally, geothermal energy was related to high temperature resources that are needed for power generation. However, the value of lower temperature resources for direct heating or recreational use has broadened the definition of geothermal energy.
The Earth's Temperatures
Of course, with our current drilling technology, we are limited to drilling relatively shallow boreholes. For example, water wells and mining boreholes may extend to several hundred metres below ground surface, while oil wells may be considerably deeper (a few thousand metres). The deepest borehole drilled on Earth was drilled in Russia, and it extends about 12 kilometres deep. Because we can only access heat energy from the very near surface of the Earth, it is to our advantage to seek out areas that have high geothermal gradients if we are interested in high temperature resources. Alternatively, if low temperature resources are sought, the relative stability of ground temperatures beyond a few metres depth allows us to access Earth energy at a fairly constant temperature year round.

Geothermal Energy? Date: Mon, 25 Apr 2005
To: Peter Meyer
From: XXX I just read Wade Frazier's piece Walking the Minefields of Free Energy , and it reminded me of an experience I had many years ago that opened my eyes. I would like to share my personal encounter with the Petroleum Industry's inhibition (prevention) of cheap alternative energy sources. Back in 1968 I got a job as a Field Engineer at Dresser Atlas, a division of Dresser Industries (a huge oilfield service holding company). During my nine months of studies and training to run sophisticated downhole oilfield logging equipment, I spent two weeks training at Dresser’s Westheimer facilities in Houston, Texas. The first day at the Westheimer facility, I noticed several renderings of a huge drilling rig hung on the walls of the central hallway of the entry building. It was obvious to me that this rig was perhaps ten times the size of the largest rig I knew of, and it spurred my curiosity. After several days, I found an engineer in an office in the main building who knew of this huge rig. He informed me that the rig was under construction by Loffland Brothers, Inc. and was to be the first such equipment designed to explore for and to tap the thermal energy of the Earth at depths below ten miles. Wow! The scientists and engineers involved speculated that once the initial costs of drilling the holes, installing the "steam" piping, special engines and huge turbines was covered or amortized, the cost of electricity would be only a tiny fraction of existing power systems. It occurred to me that the government could pay for this and easily furnish free energy to the citizens of the country, as the cost would be literally too cheap to bill!

    Background
As global environmental issues escalate, Israel stands at the forefront of the countries grappling with these issues. Israel is a small, semi-arid country with only one freshwater lake - Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) - which serves as its national water reservoir. Despite its small size, Israel has diverse climatic regions, with a substantial amount of rain in the lush north, to almost no rain in the desert region of the south. The 'greening' of the desert was the challenge that motivated Israel to develop new ways to conserve water, and to construct the National Water Carrier, which brings water from Lake Kinneret to the southern parts of the country, enabling irrigation of large areas for crops that are exported in winter, mainly to Europe. Population growth, rise in the standard of living and a series of drought years, were the main reasons for the shortage of water in Israel, as in the whole Middle East region. Israel is coping with this situation by the following initiatives:

STATEMENT OF J. STEVEN GRILES DEPUTY SECRETARY DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR BEFORE THE COMMITTEE ON RESOURCES UNITED STATES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ON POTENTIAL ALTERNATIVE ENERGY RESOURCES AVAILABLE ON NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS
October 3, 2001 Mr. Chairman and Members of the Committee:
Thank you for the opportunity to appear before you today to discuss the potential for production of alternative energy on public lands. This is a timely subject and one in which both the President and Secretary Norton have expressed great interest and support. Given the current state of the Nation's energy supplies, we must devote more time and effort to fostering the development of alternative energy sources. The Secretary has stated in testimony that strategies to augment the Nation's energy supplies lie at the heart of any national energy policy. The President's National Energy Policy echoes this sentiment. It states:
Renewable energy can help provide for our future needs by harnessing abundant, naturally occurring sources of energy, such as the sun, the wind, geothermal heat, and biomass. Effectively harnessing these renewable resources requires careful planning and advanced technology. Through improved technology, we can ensure that America will lead the world in the development of clean, natural, renewable and alternative energy supplies.
Although the current contribution of renewable and alternative energy sources is low, these sources are critical to our Nation's energy security. Their potential is made all the more attractive because of their ability to be harnessed with minimal adverse environmental impacts.

Low and High Density Alternative Sources of Energy: a Categorization
We can use the traditional `elements' to categorize the types of modern `alternative sources of energy'. I find this a useful aid to memory. Most of the energy sources that come under the rubric of the traditional four elements depend on low density transformations. This means they are expensive:
    • Earth
    • Air
    • Fire , and
    • Water
Aristotle's fifth element can represent a `high density' transformation, nuclear energy:
    • Quintessence
Like the other alternative sources of energy, nuclear energy is expensive, but for different reasons. All kinds of alternative source are examples of high initial cost development ; they will only become widespread with low incremental costs. Let's look at each element in turn: Earth is for biological, self-replicating sources, such as wood or sawdust from trees, oils used in cooking and then for diesel fuel, and ethanol from biomass. In addition, Earth is for geothermal energy sources, both those which occur in certain places, such as Iceland, and those which might be tapped by drilling deep enough. (Geothermal energy may be concentrated: a `high density' source, but readily accessible geothermal energy is rare.) The European Union could pay for growing biomass in its new members. This would enable the Union to sidestep the Common Agricultural Policy, which is no longer useful, enable richer countries to transfer money to poorer ones, and help reduce net carbon emissions.
