Tam Racquet Club, which faces south and has a 14-degree slope, perfect for orienting them. The large roof has expansion joints in it, and SPG engineered special floating connectivity systems to match the expansion joints. SPG and Geothermal Energy is in the vanguard of developing the way large solar installations are being built, and has designed cost-effective and functional technology to seamlessly integrate solar energy into large commercial buildings. Thanks in part to new technology made available in the past two to three years, solar energy has morphed into a viable energy alternative. SPG uses proprietary in-house systems to design and build solar power systems, and also provides turnkey services for both business and residential users. The 150 kilowatt per hour system will convert sunlight directly into 290,000 kilowatt/hours per year of electricity for the Racquet Club. The system will produce enough electricity during a peak summer month to supply 50 average homes.

The development of science and civilization is closely linked to the availability of energy in useful forms. Modern society consumes vast amounts of energy in all forms: light, heat, electrical, mechanical, chemical, and nuclear. The rate at which energy is produced or consumed is called power , although this term is sometimes used in common speech synonymously with energy. Types of Energy Chemical and Mechanical Energy An early source of energy, or prime mover, used by humans was animal power, i.e., the energy obtained from domesticated animals. Later, as civilization developed, wind power was harnessed to drive ships and turn windmills , and streams and rivers were diverted to turn water wheels (see water power ). The rotating shaft of a windmill or water wheel could then be used to crush grain, to raise water from a well, or to serve any number of other uses. The motion of the wind and water, as well as the motion of the wheel or shaft, represents a form of mechanical energy. The source of animal power is ultimately the chemical energy contained in foods and released when digested by humans and animals. The chemical energy contained in wood and other combustible

are the end of our article What is Geothermal Energy? Geothermal energy is a form of energy that is produced from the heat that is underneath the earth’s surface. After spending some time on processing the heat, it eventually turns into energy in the form of electricity. How does Geothermal Energy work? What happens is that a well that pumps water into the heat under the surface of the earth then turns into steam. The steam is then purified the power from the steam drives several turbines that starts a generator and produces electricity. What type of energy is Geothermal Energy?

Every Breath You Take
... Energy Timeline . . . See if you can you add something A Sustainable Energy Future - dream or reality
Imagine this. The year is 2030 A.D. Renewable energy sources are supplying over 50% of the United States' energy needs. Total energy use has decreased dramatically from its exorbitant 1990's level. Multi-megawatt windfarms, solar thermal farms and biomass plants dot the landscape. Biofuels and solar-derived hydrogen make many of our cars, trains and buses go. Photovoltaic energy technology is converting sunlight directly into electricity in remote locations. Hydropower continues to provide electricity using such technology as run-of-the-river facilities which don't need huge dams. High-temperature and direct-use geothermal energy are household words; and geothermal heat pumps warm homes everywhere. Is this a futuristic dreamscape? No, it is part of the sustainable energy forecast of many energy experts who are encouraging major state and federal policy shifts in order to make the above scenario a reality. The concepts of the sustainable energy strategy-combining energy conservation, environmental protection, and the use of "renewable" resources-are becoming integral to plans for wise energy use. In fact, many of these ideas are no longer dreams for the future. They are being put into motion today by leaders who want to see a cleaner, brighter tomorrow.

A geothermal energy system uses a series of buried pipes to transfer heat from the ground into a building during winter, where it is used to warm air that is distributed through ducts. The same system can also heat water at no additional cost. In summer, the system is reversed to transfer heat out of the building, where it uses the cooler ground as a heat sink Ethanol Wind Power Solar Energy Solar radiation can be converted into electricity using photovoltaic cells, or can be captured and converted into heat for space and water heating. Geothermal energy (literally heat from the earth) has become the "green" energy alternative of choice because it is natural, clean, renewable, reliable, efficient and inexpensive to operate. The western U.S.A. has a generous endowment of geothermal potential. Nevada occupies the area of highest crustal heat flow in North America thanks to increased magmatic activity related to plate tectonics.
Geothermal heat can be harnessed for clean electrical power generation wherever there is high heat flow in deep, fractured rock formations and a shallower, non-fractured or sealed caprock.

    Nuclear Energy
(Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, former USSR; http://www.chernobyl.co.uk/
Nuclear energy provides 7.6% of the US energy needs. The primary sources that are used to produce a nuclear reaction are Uranium-235 and Plutonium-239. Nuclear energy is generated by the splitting of the nucleus of an atom, called nuclear fission. When the nucleus divides energy is released in the form of heat and light. Nuclear fission provides a vast amount of energy, that when released slowly, can be harnessed to produce electricity. The fission of an atom of uranium liberates about 10 million times as much energy as the combustion of an atom of carbon from coal.
Disadvantages: Some of the disadvantages to nuclear power plants are that they are relatively expensive to construct and maintain, they produce hazardous nuclear waste, and there is the potential for enormous nuclear disasters. The waste produced from a nuclear reaction is highly toxic and can not be recycled. It has to be stored in a secured location where it will not effect the environment. The largest concern about nuclear energy, however, is the possibility of a nuclear disaster. One such disaster occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the former USSR.
On April 26th, 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant's number four reactor exploded, sending a radioactive cloud across much of Europe. Following the explosion, radioactivity with an intensity equivalent to 500 of the bombs that destroyed Hiroshima at the end of World War II was measured in the atmosphere. According to unofficial statistics, at least 15,000 people have died as a direct result of the explosion. The power station is still seen by critics as a time bomb, and work has been carried out ever since to try and make the site safe.

    What is Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is heat generated 4,000 miles deep inside the earth's core which is made up of iron. We call the center of the earth the iron core. The center of the earth is very hot and the earth is made up of several layers: Crust - The earth's surface is the crust which is up to 40 miles deep. The earth's crust makes up the continents and ocean floors. Mantle - The layer beneath the crust is the mantle which is approximately 1,800 miles deep. The mantle is made up of magma (or lava) and rock. When you see a volcano erupt the lava from the volcano has magma in it. Outer Core: The third layer is called the outer core which is made up of iron and magma. Iron Core: This is the center of the earth which is made up of iron. The word Geothermal comes from the Greek word geo - meaning earth, and therme - meaning heat. Geothermal energy was first used by ancient people for heating water for bathing. There are lots of natural hotsprings around the world that are heated by the earth and are used for bathing. Perhaps the most famous geothermal activity is the geyser "Old Faithful" in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Natural geysers form when underground chambers fill with water and are heated geothermally by the earth. When the water is heated to its boiling point it creates steam. The pressure from the steam causes the geyser to erupt, spewing its contents, and the cycle starts all over again.

Geothermal Energy: The Alternative of the Future
By: Christopher Bailey and Jacqueline Kerkman ( Honors Colloquium , Spring 1999)
When the energy crisis hit Americans in the 1970's, people were scrambling to find ways to conserve energy. The crisis brought to attention the very real shortage of fossil fuels. Gas and oil prices skyrocketed, and Americans looked for ways to save energy. They started producing smaller cars, driving less, and turning down their thermostats. Also, they started to examine alternate energy sources, such as solar, geothermal, and biomass. For a while, Americans were making a conscious effort to cut back on the use of fossil fuels. However, when gas and oil prices started to go back down in the early eighties, many of the conservation ideas were forgotten. In the minds of most Americans, the energy crisis had been solved because they could now afford to use fossil fuels again. Looking into the next century, we can see energy shortage problems starting to resurface. The possibility of another energy crisis is very real; however, this one will be different. It will not be a matter of fossil fuels being too expensive, it will be a matter of fossil fuels no longer being a resource. Our gas-powered cars, factories, and heating systems are using fossil fuels much faster than the dinosaurs are turning to coal. The way things are going now, we won't make it through the next century before running out of our fossil fuels. The problems with fossil fuels go beyond their rapid depletion. The pollution from burning fossil fuels is really taking a toll on the
