Geothermal Energy
Truly The Low-Cost Alternative
The real cost of energy in the U.S. is not at all reflected in what wc pay at the gas pump or on our utility bills. Much of the true costs of energy, using today's fuel mix, are hidden. If the costs of corrosion damage, health impacts, crop losses, radioactive waste disposal, military expenditures to protect foreign energy sources, and direct economic subsidies to the fossilfuel and nuclear industries were totalled and added to the energy bills we see, the price would astound us. The answer to decreasing the true cost of energy is not to hide part of the cost but to alter our energy-use patterns and fuel sources to bring in much more renewable energy and conservation. If we changed our methods of utility regulation to require integrated-resource planning with all environmental and other hidden energy costs explicitly accounted for, it would be possible for utilities to use more renewable-energy resources economically. Our total energy costs would decrease and we would have a much cleaner environment. Accelerated development of renewable resources and conservation are the lowest-cost options in some cases, even with the hidden subsidies for the conventional energies. If hidden subsidies were made visible in energy pricing, geothermal energy would be seen for what it really is the energy bargain of the century.

Alternative Energy Vietnam: 400MW Geothermal Energy Capacity
Vietnams's Thanh Nien newspaper reports that the earth can be regarded as an enormous geothermal machine, the abundant energy of which is demonstrated by the eruption of the volcanoes, hot spring water, and hot natural air. Man is presently harnessing only a small fraction of that energy.
The start-up capital for such energy is around US$1.5 million per MW, which is 1.5 times more expensive than that of hydroelectricity, experts said.
Geothermal electricity, however, is more feasible than hydroelectricity with a shorter period of construction (estimated from 2 to 3 years), and a smaller construction site; a heat-storing tub located at several km underground, according to experts.
Developed countries like the US, Japan, Russia, and developing ones such as China, the Philippines, Malaysia, among others are making hectic preparations to construct geothermal power stations.

Geothermal Energy: Hot Dry Rock (HDR) - The Habanero
Hot Dry Rock (HDR) geothermal energy or heat mining has recently been recognized as a new resource according to Irena Knethl's article on alternative energy technology in Australia in the Yemen Times.
Hot Dry Rock technology is capable of generating low cost, base-load power on a large scale.
In Australia the US $5.4m experimental basin represents the largest known geothermal resource in the world and has the potential to supply thousands of megawatts of low cost power. Known resources have the energy equivalent of 50 billion barrels of oil according to the article.
Hot Dry Rock (HDR) does not depend on new technology. It relies on extracting heat from particularly hot granite at depths of less than 5 km (approximately 3 miles) from the surface
The heat is extracted by means of circulating water from a deep surface well, through an engineered underground heat exchanger, with the hot water returning to the surface through the second well.

Oil fuels the modern world. No other substance can equal the enormous impact which the use of oil has had on so many people, so rapidly, in so many ways, and in so many places around the world. Oil in its various refined derivative forms, such as gasoline, kerosene, and diesel fuel, has a unique combination of many desirable and useful characteristics. These include a current availability in abundance, a currently high net energy recovery, a high energy density, ease of transportation and storage, relative safety, and great versatility in end use. Oil is also useful as more than an energy source. It is the basis for the manufacture of petrochemical products including plastics, medicines, paints, and myriad other useful materials. Finally, the asphalt "bottoms" from refineries have converted millions of miles of muddy trails around the world into paved highways on which transport vehicles fueled by oil run. Alternative energy sources must be compared with oil in all these various attributes when their substitution for oil is considered. None appears to completely equal oil.

Alternative Energy Sources
Alternative energy sources are resources that are constantly replaced and are usually less polluting. They are not the result of the burning of fossil fuels or splitting of atoms. The use of renewable energy is contributing to our energy supply. Some alternative energy sources are: biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar, wind power, fuel cells, ocean thermal energy conversion, tidal energy, and wave energy. Biomass is renewable energy that is produced from organic matter. Biomass fuels include wood and forest and mill residues, animal waste, grains, agricultural crops, and aquatic plants. These materials are used as fuel to heat water for steam or processed into liquids and gases, which can be burned to do the same thing. With more use of biomass at lower production costs and better technology, the United States could generate as much as four-and-a-half times more biopower by 2020. It is estimated that biomass will have the largest increase among renewable energy sources, rising by 80 percent and reaching 65.7 billion kWh in 2020. Geothermal energy Hydroelectric (hydropower) energy employs the force of falling water to drive turbine-generators to produce electricity. Hydropower produces more electricity than any other alternative energy sources. It has been estimated that hydroelectric power will decline from 389 billion kWh in the U.S. in 1999 to 298 billion kWh in 2020. This decline is expected because most of the best sites for hydropower have already been developed and because of concerns about the adverse impact that large-scale hydroelectric facilities may have on the environment.

Electricity Generation and Distribution
What Is Electricity?
Electricity is a form of energy that starts with atoms. Atoms are too small to see, but they make up everything around us. All atoms are composed of subatomic particles among which are the charged particles known as electrons and protons. Protons, which are found in the nucleus of an atom, carry a positive charge (+), and electrons, which spin around the center of an atom, carry a negative charge (-). Neutrons also exist in the nucleus of a typical atom and are uncharged. Electricity is a form of energy that is associated with the buildup and movement of electrons and protons. Electricity can be created by forcing electrons to flow from atom to atom. The force or push of electricity is measured in volts. Electrical systems of most homes and office have 120 volts.
How Electricity Is Generated
Most electricity in the U.S. is generated using coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear energy, or hydropower. Some production is done with alternative fuels like geothermal energy, wind power, biomass, solar energy, or fuel cells.

Eugene, Oregon Oil fuels the modern world. It brought great changes to economies and lifestyles in less than 200 years. Nothing else to date can equal the enormous impact which the use of oil has had on so many people, so rapidly, and in so many ways around the world. But oil is a finite resource. The common question "How long will oil be produced?" is the wrong question. The critical question is "When is the date of the maximum daily amount of world oil productionthe peak?" After that oil will be an irreversibly declining resource facing an increasing demand which cannot be met. The world passed its peak of rate of oil discoveries in the 1960s, but there is a lag time from discovery to full production. Although estimates differ slightly, it seems clear that the peak of world oil production will be reached at least by 2020, and possibly within the next decade (Campbell 1997; Campbell & Laherrere 1998; Ivanhoe 1995). One statistic points up the need to think about alternative energy sources; the world now uses about 26 billion barrels of oil a year, and in new field discoveries we are finding less than 5.5 billion barrels annually. The world is going out of the oil business. With the many good things which oil now does for us, what will happen when we no longer have it? What are the possible alternatives to oil? Can any one of them or all combined really fill the gap left by the depletion of oil?

Welcome to Earthworm Tunneling!
We are a research, development, and public advocacy company dedicated to both improving the state of the art in tunneling equipment and informing the general public and government officials of the great societal benefits available from increased public investment in mining and drilling technology improvements.
As a result of relevant technological research, we have become deeply invested in the field of geothermal energy and its benefits for businesses, the individual, and the environment. As fossil fuels head toward an eventual ceiling of availability, and therefore cause consumer prices to skyrocket, geothermal energy becomes a more and more attractive alternative. Additionally, as a natural, renewable energy source, it has an extremely low negative impact on the environment in comparison to current sources.
This is an obvious incentive to go geothermal. One that may not be so obvious is the cost-efficient nature of such a renewable source; once the initial investment has been made and a geothermal system is in place, the cost-to-output ratio is highly superior.
Geothermal energy has already been implemented in many places across the country and around the world. Find out what benefits it could have for you in your own

Historically, geothermal energy in the form of hot springs was used for bathing and heating. Geothermal energy was first used to produce electricity in 1904, by a group of Italians who used the steam naturally erupting from the earth to power a generator. The first successful American geothermal plant was built in 1960 at the Geysers in California. There are presently 64 geothermal plants in the United States.
Geothermal energy is renewable and does little damage to the environment. Large high temperature geothermal plants typically recycle the water used, injecting it back into the geothermal reservoir. Geothermal plants produce almost no emissions because they do not burn any fuel to produce the electricity they use, and since they sit on top of their energy supply, the amount of emissions produced in transporting this energy source is negligible.
