Teaching certificates guarantee adequate content knowledge and teaching skills
University System teacher-preparation institutions guarantee the quality of their graduates. Graduates will know all subjects included on the teaching certificate sufficiently to help students learn the content required in schools. Teacher candidates will be required to demonstrate their ability to bring diverse students to high levels of learning.
New policy to end out-of-field teaching
Out-of-field teaching has been defined as follows: "Out-of-field teaching occurs when a teacher is teaching any subject with less than an academic minor or equivalent in that field." Strategies to end out-of-field teaching have been identified and are being put in place. The Georgia Educator Workforce Research and Development Division will gather information on numbers of out-of-field teachers, and the Professional Standards Commission will revise Middle Grades certificates to indicate approved subject areas. Middle School teachers are being offered additional coursework in math and science. Lead teachers in the Pre-K program will be required to have a two-year certificate or diploma so that they will have an academic minor or equivalent in their field.

CERTIFICATION OVERVIEW
Certification and evaluation of potential teacher candidates ensures that all Georgia teachers "meet specified preparation standards and requirements," while setting "a standardized base-level of professional knowledge and skills for the educators working in public schools." The Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) is the governing body responsible for all teacher certification, licensure, and educator testing. Click here for more information from the PSC.
When you begin the certification process will depend on your pathway. Most teacher candidates apply for certification after completing a teacher preparation program. The influx of mid-career professionals into the field has increased interest in certification that permits full-time teaching while completing a teacher preparation program.
When you begin to seek employment is also dependent upon your pathway. Most school districts list their job openings on their individual school system websites (under human resources). You may also find the following teacher recruitment sites helpful in your search for employment:

Recent College Graduates and Mid-career Professionals
Mid-Career Professionals and Recent College graduates offer students strong content knowledge and provide a unique perspective to the classroom. Due to the need for teacher preparation coursework, the pathway options for both groups are very similar. Programs designed for college graduates or mid-career professionals may be called "alternative certification", "non-traditional" or "alternative preparation" programs. Careful research is strongly encouraged before choosing a program. Verify that the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) approves the program, that it fits into your schedule, and that the courses meet the PSC requirements for certification. Programs have class size limitations, set application deadlines, and start in particular semesters, typically Fall or Summer. Choosing the Right Program
The best teacher education programs, traditional or otherwise, offer courses that emphasize a robust content knowledge, pedagogy (learning how to teach), while providing numerous opportunities to interact with students and communities.
