Dr. Isaac S. Hopkins, president of Emory College in Oxford, Georgia, is named president of the Georgia School of Technology. During the summer, the Shop Building and Academic Building are constructed on the campus, located just north of the city limits. The Administration Building contains administrative offices as well as classrooms for math, chemistry and English. Students learn trade skills in the Shop, which contains blacksmith, metal and machine shops, and two foundries. President Hopkins, who also teaches physics, recruits Lyman Hall (mathematics), Charles Lane (English), R. B. Shepherd (mechanical and free-hand drawing) and W. H. Emerson (chemistry) to serve as Tech’s first faculty. Each county in Georgia is allocated a number of full-tuition scholarships equal to the number of seats that county holds in the General Assembly. Out-of-state students are charged $150 a year. The first 84 students register on October 3 and take entrance exams. The school is open only to white males; 64 years would pass before white women were admitted, and another 9 years before the first black students enter Tech. The school’s motto: To know, to do, to be. Its symbol is an anvil.

RELATED An explanation of the origin of life theories ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) A suburban Atlanta school board Thursday night voted unanimously to allow teachers to introduce students to different views about the origins of life. The Cobb County Board of Education, the state's second-largest school board, approved the policy change after limited discussion, calling it a "necessary element of providing a balanced education." The board's vote drew cheers from some and expressions of dismay from others in the packed meeting room. "This supposed victory [by proponents of alternate theories] was shallow, very shallow," said Jeffrey Selman. Selman and other opponents believe the new policy is a step toward introducing religion in particular, creationism in public schools. "We're going to be watching this very closely." The adopted policy, however, included language intended to clarify the board's position that its action is not an endorsement of one particular theory over another.

Georgia School Shoppers Get Extra Credit

By: Greg Bluestein, Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) - A Georgia plan to give parents a back-to-school break on sales taxes covers everything from pencils to penny loafers and even from skin-diving suits to garter belts. Shoppers are finding the program which grants the tax breaks only in broad categories, like footwear and undergarments can be stretched to include items not on the traditional pupil's wish list. For example, during the four-day tax holiday outdoors enthusiasts can skip sales taxes on fishing vests, ski boots, karate outfits and inline skates, as long as they cost less than $100. And to the delight of twentysomethings who combed through a trendy Atlanta mall on Thursday, garter belts and corsets are also exempt from the usual sales tax of 5 percent to 8 percent.

A Georgia school district has A Georgia school district has decreed that evolution is just a theory and should not therefore be given priority in the schools. The ruling came down after 2000 county residents signed a petition demanding that stickers stating that evolution is theory and not a fact be placed on the covers of all biology books. Here is the Cobb County School District's policy on Theories of Origin:
As stated in Policy IA, Philosophy, it is the educational philosophy of the Cobb County School District to provide a broad based curriculum; therefore, the Cobb County School District believes that discussion of disputed views of academic subjects is a necessary element of providing a balanced education, including the study of the origin of the species. This subject remains an area of intense interest, research, and discussion among scholars. As a result, the study of this subject shall be handled in accordance with this policy and with objectivity and good judgment on the part of teachers, taking into account the age and maturity level of their students. The purpose of this policy is to foster critical thinking among students, to allow academic freedom consistent with legal requirements, to promote tolerance and acceptance of diversity of opinion, and to ensure a posture of neutrality toward religion. It is the intent of the Cobb County Board of Education that this policy not be interpreted to restrict the teaching of evolution; to promote or require the teaching of creationism; or to discriminate for or against a particular set of religious beliefs, religion in general, or non-religion.
