GEORGIA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION

The Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) is an association of private, independent, and parochial schools throughout the state. In Georgia, as throughout the nation, each member school is unique. Each shares a commitment to overall excellence and to the nurture and care of the physical, intellectual, social and moral development of all students.
The GISA was established to provide coordination of and services for member schools, dissemination of information between and among the schools, and to join other regional and national bodies in providing leadership on important educational issues. In addition, the Association attempts to foster close relations between member schools and the colleges and public schools in the State of Georgia.
The Georgia Independent School Association is a full member of the Georgia Private Education Council (GPEC) and is an affliate of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). GISA Member Schools - don't forget to LOG-IN and check your school's contact information and make sure it is up-to-date and accurate. About the City of Dawsonville Dawsonville, incorporated December 10, 1859, is the county seat of Dawson County. The city was named after William C. Dawson, a compiler of the laws of Georgia and commander of a brigade in the Creek Indian War of 1836. Dawson also served in both houses of the state legislature and in Congress before the Civil War. Among the first structures built in Dawsonville were a log courthouse and a wooden reinforced jail. The original courthouse was replaced in 1860, by the historic courthouse which still stands in the middle of Dawsonville. The original jail was destroyed by fire soon after it was completed during a failed escape attempt. The county was without a jail until 1881, when the historic jail was completed. During the period when no jail was available, county officials relied on jails in surrounding counties to house prisoners. The old jail is located west of the courthouse and, along with the historic courthouse, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Both the jail and the courthouse have undergone extensive renovation to restore them to their original appearance. The Dawson County/Dawsonville Welcome Center is currently housed in the historic jail. Dawsonville hosts a number of festivals and events, including the Thunder in the Sky Fireworks Display in July and The Mountain Moonshine Festival in October. The Dawsonville town square comes alive with cars, arts and crafts displays, clogging, and other entertainment.

Private vs. Public Schools: What's the Difference?
(Page 1 of 3) Your goal is to find a school that will meet your child's needs. But how do you choose between a public school and a private school? By Victoria Thorp and Jesse James, GreatSchools.net Staff
Cost
Public schools cannot charge tuition. They are funded through federal, state and local taxes. When you pay your taxes, you are paying for your child's education and the education of other children in your community. Private schools cost money. Private schools do not receive tax revenues, but instead are funded through tuition, fundraising, donations and private grants. According to the National Association of Independent Schools, the median tuition for private day schools in the United States is close to $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $13,000 for grades 6 to 8 and $15,000 for grades 9 to 12. The median tuition for boarding schools is $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $27,000 for grades 6 to 9, and $28,000 for grades 9 to 12. Parochial schools generally charge somewhat less.

The Georgia Medical Society was incorporated in Savannah. Stand Watie ( photo ) was born in the Cherokee Nation in northwest Georgia near present-day Rome. He became a successful planter but incurred the wrath of many fellow Cherokees when he signed the Treaty of New Echota, which forced the Cherokees to give up their lands in Georgia and move west to the Indian Territory (in what is present-day Oklahoma). In 1861, he persuaded many Cherokees to join him in siding with the Confederacy. He raised the Cherokee Mounted Rifles and served as their colonel. In 1864, he was promoted to brigadier general. In June 1865, Watie became the last Confederate general to surrender his command. He died on Sept. 9, 1871 in Delaware City, Oklahoma. On June 29, 1995, the U.S. Postal Service issued a Stand Watie commemorative stamp Gov. George Troup signed an act creating Baker County as Georgia's 66th county. Baker County , named for Revolutionary patriot Col. John Baker, was created from portions of Early County.
