GEORGIA
I. Background:
The American Bar Association (ABA) recommended in 1990 that all state codes on judicial conduct adopt non-discrimination prohibitions that include sexual orientation, which 25 states did, including Georgia. In 1993, a statewide survey conducted by the University of Georgia's Survey Research Center found Georgians wanted their children taught lessons on people of different races, ethnic groups and cultures, but they drew the line at gays and lesbians. Also in 1993, a bill was introduced in the state legislature to make sex education less available to students and to require "that all sex education emphasize the benefits of abstinence and the structure of the family." Another was introduced "to provide that no instruction under this Act shall encourage the violation of Georgia law" [code for not teaching about LGBT people, since "sodomy" is still illegal in the state]. Likewise, in 1994, fundamentalists introduced legislation regarding sex education, book banning, and school prayer. The sex ed bill, an amendment introduced by Sen. Pete Robinson (D-Columbus) stated, in part "...appropriated funds shall only be expended for responsible sex education and AIDS prevention courses which do not promote homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle." The amendment passed the Senate but was deleted in the House-Senate conference committee. Someone who stood up for our rights during the debate was Sen. Ron Slotin (D-Atlanta). The book banning bill would have allowed petition initiatives in individual school districts to remove books from the shelves; if a certain number of signatures were collected on a petition to ban specific book)s), then the school board would have been required to hold hearings on the subject. The author eventually withdrew the bill. The school prayer bill did pass and was to take effect in 1995.

If every time we encountered something new, we had to learn about it as if we'd never seen anything in our lives before, we'd never get past the bedroom door. Part of learning is being able to group examples of things into sets or concepts that share common elements, or critical attributes. So we know most four-legged fuzzy things that bark are dogs, most Hollywood movies end happily, and most soft drinks are fizzy. When you have to tell examples of a concept from those things that aren't, it helps to analyze a group of good examples to see what they have in common. That's what we'll be doing in this activity. If you want to get a feel for what good conceptual learning looks like, review the evaluation rubric that goes with this activity. Either way, get ready to switch on your brain, open your eyes, and begin to recognize the critical attributes that define the key aspects of school safety. School Shootings Use the links below to look at incidents of school shootings. Use these examples to find important things that are common traits. Taking all the links together, what are the key features that any example of this concept has to have? Write down the 3 - 5 things you think examples of this concept have to have.

A program to develop a nature trail for the use of students and the community has led to the naming of White County School System in Cleveland, Ga., as the state's 2005 recipient of the Civic Star Award. The program included three major projects that followed the purchase of a wooded piece of land by the White County Board of Education in the late 1990s for the building of White County Intermediate School. The property included a beautiful mountainous landscape and ecologically diverse environments including a creek and many plant and animal species. In January 2001, the board applied for and ultimately received a Georgia Recreational Trails Program grant for developing an interpretive trail system encircling the school. The goal of developing a trail was to provide the school system and community with educational and physical fitness opportunities.

What are the implications of these issues for the educational and cultural communities in the management, use and re-use of media online? Are film studios so concerned about piracy that they will not give permission for classroom use? Is licensing the only answer for digital access to media and will it be prohibitively expensive for teachers and researchers? How feasible are automated permissions? Is Fair Use still a viable option for online use of media? What other issues are preventing the online distribution of our rich heritage in dance?
