Nursing Scholarship Nursing Green to Gold Undergraduate Nursing Education Generally, individuals participating in ROTC are pursuing a bachelor's degree in nursing in what is referred to as the generic nursing track. This track is for individuals with no previous college degree and/or no experience and licensure in a nursing field. However, Registered Nurses or Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurses who can complete a baccalaureate nursing program in 2 or 3 years may also be eligible to participate in ROTC. For generic nursing track students, nursing is an extremely competitive degree program in which more freshmen students are often admitted than expected to graduate. At many colleges and universities, sophomores must reapply for admission or acceptance into the "upper division" (junior and senior years) of nursing. The Army has developed a special program ensuring that qualified ROTC nurse cadets get accepted into the upper division. In March 1996, Cadet Command implemented a program called "Partnership in Nursing Education (PNE)." This program established "partnerships or affiliations" between many colleges and universities with nursing programs and Army ROTC. These schools guarantee progression of qualified Army ROTC nurse cadets into the clinical nursing or upper division classes.

I.) was established in Marietta, Georgia in 1851 and was the state's first military school. The campus, located on 110 acres of rolling hills about a mile from the square of Marietta on the road to Powder Springs, included a main school building, four dormitories and the house quarters for the Superintendent. In 1852, G. M. I. received 120 cadet muskets, 18 small swords and a battery of four six-pounder guns with the seal of the state of Georgia and the inscription "Georgia Military Institute" on the barrels. In 1858, the Armory building was added, along with two cannons and an appropriation of gun powder. Cadets guarded the Armory 24 hours a day. G. M. I. opened on July 1, 1851 with three instructors and seven cadets and quickly grew to almost 200 cadets. In 1852 it was incorporated and officially founded when the state legislature granted a charter that provided for regulation of the school and a state appointed Board of Visitors. By 1853, six faculty members and 180 cadets filled the campus near capacity. The student body fluxuated between 150- 200 cadets up to the outbreak of the War Between the States.

History and Traditions
G eorgia Military College was created in 1879 by act of the Georgia General Assembly "to educate young men and women from the Middle Georgia area in an environment which fosters the qualities of good citizenship." It was the apparent intention of the General Assembly to establish the school as a unit of the slowly forming University System. State property in Milledgeville was loaned to the University of Georgia by the Act of 1879, and the Board of Trustees of the University of Georgia was given veto powers by this Act over the acts of the local Board of Trustees of the new institution. The school was originally called Middle Georgia Military and Agricultural College and was ceded state government lands surrounding the Old Capitol Building, the seat of government for the State of Georgia from 1807-1868. The Old Capitol Building, then as now, is the main college facility and sits on the highest point in Milledgeville. The College was founded in an era when what we now consider public education throughout the South was practically non-existent. It was apparently the intention of the legislature to take some steps to correct this lack of educational opportunity. The word College as applied to the institution was, perhaps, not quite accurate. The school would begin as what would now be termed a high school; however, its curriculum, including as it did subjects far beyond the scope of the high schools of today, made it possible for GMC graduates to enroll with advanced standing into the University of Georgia and other institutions of higher learning. The General Assembly intended the new school to offer preparatory instruction that would enable graduates to enter higher classes at the University of Georgia, to give training in agriculture and mining, and, finally, to train teachers.
