Columbus Ledger-Enquirer that citizens began complaining to city council. Some said the $250,000 price tag was too high; others said the library should have chosen a local artist instead of Albert Paley, of Rochester, New York; still others thought the decision to spend that much tax money should have had some public input. Councilor Red McDaniel said in the June 15 Ledger-Enquirer The new $50.4-million Columbus Public Library opened January 3, funded by a 1% sales tax that county voters approved in 1999. Georgia Historic Books
The Georgia Historic Books database contains full-text, fully searchable books related to Georgia's history and culture. Most are from the 19th to early 20th century and focus on Georgia history, biography, and literature. The database will contain approximately 300 selected books when complete. These have been selected using bibliographies on Georgia history and in consultation with historians, librarians, and other experts on the literature and history of Georgia. The focus of the selection favors history, biography, and literature, but other subject areas related to Georgia are also included. The books may deal with Georgia history as a subject, or they may have been important for the cultural and intellectual development of the state.

A CONTINUING CHALLENGE FOR LIBRARIANS: MEETING THE NEEDS OF DISTANCE EDUCATION STUDENTS
by Carol Goodson
MC Journal: The Journal of Academic Media Librarianship
, v4#1, Summer 1996 Judging from the comments voiced at the 1995 ALA program on services to off-campus students in Chicago (http://fringe.lib.ecu.edu/Newspapers/ECLSS/report.html) , and discussions on the LIBREF-L listserv librarians all over the country are becoming increasingly frustrated in their attempts to help distance education students meet their course-related needs. Such students are becoming a problem for public libraries especially, which are simply not equipped to meet the kinds of demands being placed on them by college students. In the 19th century public libraries served as the first tax supported agencies that helped foster (self or continuing) education among the members of their communities. To some, the role of the public library was "to serve as a supplement to the public school system." ( Lee 1968 , 90) This concept of the public library as a kind of "people's university" subsided as compulsory school attendance became the norm and the general educational level of the population increased. As Lee indicated, "The educational objective gradually changed from emphasis on helping adults to make up for their lack of formal schooling to encouraging all adults to use their leisure creatively and . . . to educate themselves continuously." (

CNI FALL 1997 TASK FORCE MEETING HANDOUT
The Long, but Short History of GALILEOGeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online

GALILEO was born out of a history of necessity melding with ideas, ideas melding with opportunities, and opportunities melding with resources. Of course, the bulwark of functioning in a bureaucracy is the much maligned committee, which is where, long before anyone knew it, GALILEO got its start. The Regents Academic Committee on Libraries (RACL) of the University System of Georgia (USG) was organized in 1968. RACL gave University System librarians an opportunity to meet regularly to discuss their concerns, possible common problems, and library management. Over time, computer technology became a part of library management, and with growth and new, expensive technology, costs escalated. In an effort to manage costs and the burgeoning application of technology in libraries, the state EDP (electronic data processing) committee recognized that a coordinated effort would be necessary in the selection of efficient and cost effective library automation systems. As a result, an advisory committee on information technology (IT) was formed in 1989 through the incentive of Dr. J.B. Mathews, then Vice Chancellor of Information Technology (VCIT). The purpose of the advisory committee was to provide coordination, information, and support to USG libraries in information management and in automation. A core group of System librarians, along with a liaison from what is now the Office of Information and Instructional Technology (OIIT), began meeting on a regular basis in an effort to provide leadership for USG libraries. In keeping with the mandate of the EDP committee, the IT advisory committee made recommendations on the desired functions of an automation system and then selected a limited number of systems that could be adopted. The oversight of the IT advisory committee eventually expanded to address other library needs, such as lack of bibliographic records in computer format; resource sharingespecially electronic databases; and cost efficient automation of smaller libraries.
