Eastern Continental Divide in Georgia (Divides drainage between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic) Including over 200 GPS waypoints annotated as to their relation to the Divide (29 April 2004 -add information about Gainesville Airport and Ellicott and Commissioner's Rocks -by Jack Yeazel WHY DO IT: As far as we can determine, there is no (detailed) map of this dividing line in existence. But by visiting http://nationalatlas.gov/natlas/NatlasStart.asp -where by selecting the "Water" + mark, then checking the "Hydrologic Units" box, and then "Zooming" in, one can trace the ECD for most of the US. There isn't enough detail to develop an accurate map of it, but one can certainly get the 'big picture'. This being the case, it was decided to research the Divide in Georgia. The Georgia Information Geologist* directed me to a map of the major river drainage in Georgia (below). This map can be found at: http://csat.er.usgs.gov/ga_epd/index.html CONSTRUCTION: I overlaid the above map with a red line which is the Divide. Detailed map and GIS information can be downloaded for each of these river basins from the above site and viewed with ArcExplorer -also available at the site. These maps can show (or not show) major roads, smaller roads, county lines, topo maps, etc. By comparing the "clues" from these maps, I created GPS waypoints at identifiable landmarks and on drivable roads where possible.
