History Demographics Economy ... Home State of Georgia
  • Georgia's land area of 57,906 square miles makes it the largest state east of the Mississippi River (24th overall). The total area of the state's three largest counties-Ware, Burke, and Clinch (2,565 square miles)-is greater than the area of the entire state of Delaware (1,954 square miles).
Georgia falls within five major physiographic regions: the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northeast, the Ridge and Valley Providence and the Cumberland Plateau in the northwest, the Piedmont across Georgia's center, and the Coastal Plain in the south. Elevations range from sea level to 4,784 feet at Brasstown Bald in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Blue Ridge mountain area features the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, a 2,100 mile hiking trail ending in Maine. The mountain range's peaks were once higher than the Rockies, but some 100 million years of erosion has worn them down to about a quarter of their original height. Nonetheless, the mountains attract millions of visitors each year, particularly in the summer and fall.
The Piedmont area is home to the red clay soil of Georgia and its rolling hills and valleys. Southwest Georgia is known for its abundant farmland. The Coastal Plains feature the tidal swamps and lowlands of the coast and the northern reaches of the Okefenokee Swamp. Georgia's beaches are popular with vacationers.

"The Vale of Beauty"
A History of Valdosta, Georgia
Introduction Hello! My name is Christian Jones and I have developed a wonderful thematic unit about the history of Valdosta, Georgia. The city of Valdosta is more than just a beautiful city, it holds a great deal of history. There are many cultures, traditions, and even secrets that derived from this small city in south Georgia. This unit is important to children because it gives them insight into what they need to know about the community in which they live in. It is very important for children to know the history of the area from which they are from. History becomes real to them if we as teachers are able to illustrate it first hand. We have to show that history truly surronds them on a daily basis. I think that this would be a wonderful way to share what I have learned about my city with the rest of you. So kick back, relax, and have some fun in the sun while we explore the "Vale of Beauty"- Valdosta, Georgia.

History
Andersonville was "POW camp" to the world but it is "small town" for Georgians who knew very well. As you heard the story about Andersonville POW prison and Andersonville National Historic Site including years, there was a small town next to that site as known as Civil War village. Andersonville was founded after they set the place for union POWs who brought by the train. They had to create hotel, post office, restaurant, and other places for visitors, Confederate soldiers, and prison staff. Now they have a small museum to display how the town founded and became involved with the site of Andersonville. Missing image

high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions:
  • New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
  • The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
  • The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma.
  • The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

http://ngeorgia.com/naturally/chattahoochee01.html
Chattahoochee River It begins as a spring in the fittingly name "Chattahoochee Gap," little more than a trickle of water at 3200 feet. Over the first 100 miles the river falls almost 2400 feet, forms a major Southeast lake (Lanier) and provides water for millions of Georgians. The river has played a key role in the history of the state. Paleolithic and Woodland Indians called it home. Moundbuilders navigated it as far north as present-day Helen . The Cherokee and Creek used the river as a border, first between their Nations, then between themselves and early settlers. In its watershed the first great American Gold Rush occurred. Crossing the river was a major accomplishment for William Tecumseh Sherman during the Atlanta Campaign . The flooding of the " ...valleys of Hall " helped to feed Georgia's second "gold rush" tourism. Today, in addition to providing drinking water and power in north Georgia the Chattahoochee is a major source of recreation. Fishing, tubing, canoeing, boating, hiking and camping on its banks, shores, and in its watershed are all popular activities. But the Chattahoochee is also challenged: north of Atlanta, the once pristine condition of the river and its tributaries is being repeatedly intruded upon by the city's sprawling growth, in some cases illegally, and south of the city, the river retains a reputation of being one of the most heavily polluted stretches of river in the country.
