Randolph County, Georgia History
Randolph is a county in the WSW part of Georgia and contains about 800 square miles. It was established by act of Congress on December 20, 1828 from Lee County. It was named for John Randolph (1773 - 1833), a Senator and Representative from Virginia for many years. Randolph County included all of Stewart and Quitman Counties and parts of Terrell and Clay Counties. Cuthbert was established and made the county seat in 1831. It was incorporated into a town in 1834. Indians were in this area until 1836 when they were driven out after the Creek Rebellion. Randolph county is rich in old homes, some dating back as far as 1837. There are roughly 34 homes built in the 1800s within the city limits of Cuthbert. The present courthouse was built in 1885. The original was a log fort building. By the late 1850s, Cuthbert was recognized as the educational center of Georgia because of the two women's colleges in its area, Andrew College and Baptist Female College of Southwest Georgia and a male academy. Andrew College is the second oldest in the US and in 1956 became co-ed. Railroads came to the area in the 1850s and it became a thriving agricultural center. Now, Randolph County focuses on industry, which prospers from its excellent transportation facilities. Also, because of its abundant water supply and mostly mild weather, agriculture flourishes.

The Genealogical and Historical Room has one of the most outstanding reference collections of its type in the South. It was founded in 1923 by the Mary Hammond Washington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, who realized the need for the library to provide source material and assistance for people tracing their lineage and searching for facts about their ancestors. They also believed that certain old and irreplaceable records of local and regional history should be preserved for the future and made available for researchers. Starting with a small but valuable collection given by the James Hyde Porter family and housed in part of a small room, the Genealogical and Historical Room has grown to include more than 23,000 volumes and over 17,000 microforms. Located on the ground floor of the Washington Memorial Library, it is considered outstanding by genealogists and historians from all over the United States. Last year over 13,000 researchers came from 38 states and 5 foreign countries to use the facilities. The growth of this room is a direct result of the support of enthusiastic and interested people and groups of people who, living not only in Macon but in many other parts of the country, have generously given money, books, and furnishings. Many of these gifts have been as memorials; the bookplates and the plaques on the equipment and furnishings give some indication as to those persons who have been responsible for the success of this room.

In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Georgia Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Georgia, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. The History of Covington and Newton County
(adapted from Newton County Chamber of Commerce Newton County was created by the Georgia General Assembly on December 24, 1821. It was named for Revolutionary War hero Sergeant John Newton. It was formed from parts of Henry, Jasper, and Walton Counties. The Creek Indians roamed the land until 1813 when Governor Thorp negotiated a treaty in which the Creeks gave up their claim to the land A decade later the last of the Creek Indians were banished to Oklahoma over the "Trail of Tears." The first white settlers located in Eastern Newton County in a town then-named Winton. "The Brick Store" was built in 1822 and still stands today. Lack of adequate water caused the settlers to move further west and stablish Newtonsboro. The name was later changed to Covington after General Leonard Covington, a hero in the war of 1812. In 1853 Covington was incorporated as a City. The coming of the railroad in 1845 was the beginning of the growth and stability of Newton County. Newton County's extensive agricultural base produced related industries, like textile mills, as early as the 1840's. After 1900, textiles became a major industry in the area serving the farmers of the surrounding counties.

Centerville, Georgia
Centerville is located in the Rockbridge district in the southwestern part
of the county, south of the present day Highway 78. Before the Civil War it was called Sneezer. The post office was established in 1879 with T. J. Minor as postmaster. Mr. J.L. Evans succeeded him in 1885 and continued in that position until the post office was discontinued in 1903. Surrounded by fertile farmland, Centerville prospered with several stores and other businesses. Dr. J. M. Guess practiced medicine there for many years. Other early settlers were Thomas Maguier, Rev. J. M. Lee, David Anderson, Richard Holt, Zachry Lee, and others. Several county officials were born and raised in that section of Gwinnett County. Thomas Maguire was a representative in 1838. B. W. Weaver was captain of a company in the Confederate Army. H. J. Campbell was tax collector, James P. Mason was sheriff, and E. E. Norton was tax receiver. Zoar Methodist Church was organized long before the Civil War, but the actual date is unknown. The building in the center of town is the third location. Some of the early ministers were J. D. Anthony (1847), the Anthony brothers (1865-1869), Rev. Johnson (1869-79), Rev. Cramer (1871), J. W. Stipes (1872), F. F. Reynolds (1873-1874), J. H. Bentley (1875-76), J. S. Embry (1877-78). On Wednesday, August 19, 1819, Ely Massey, Dicy Parker, Divinity Knight, Sarah Barnett and Luke Robinson organized Rockbridge Baptist Church. During the following year a log house was erected which was used until
