OAS_AD('Top'); CAPTAIN GEORGE BARBER OF GEORGIA by David W. Morgan Chapter One Captain GEORGE BARBER p. 1 - 10 The parents of Captain George Barber were George and Elizabeth Barber of Augusta County, Virginia. The elder George died 1750 in that colony, and one of the appraisers of his estate in Augusta County was Robert Williams, the uncle of Margaret Watkins, Margaret later to become the bride of Capt. George Barber. Elizabeth, widow of the elder George Barber, married a man by the name of Patton in May of 1751 on Craig's Creek. Robert Watkins (Father of Margaret), the elder George Barber, and Matthew Patton all lived near each other on Craig's Creek in 1745. Matthew Patton was the step-father of Capt. George Barber. He lived next to the Watkins family in Johnston County, North Carolina in 1767, and lived next to Capt. George Barber and Reese Watkins in Wilkes County, Georgia. Matthew Patton died in Wilkes County, Georgia in 1806, and two of the executors of his will were Capt. George Barber and Christopher Orr. Matthew Patton had been a witness to the will of Christopher's father, Robert Orr, in Johnston County, North Carolina in 1779. This same Christopher had married Martha, the daughter of Reese Watkins. Reese Watkins was the older brother of Margaret Watkins.

For many years now I have been collecting burial information from various cemeteries in the State of Georgia and keeping the information inside file folders. But no more! Now, I am building a cemetery database and beginning to incorporate it into this website. Granted, the undertaking is monumental, so, for the time being, I am confining it to two divisions...
1. Family Cemeteries
2. Oldest Citizens (includes Colonials and Revolutionary War Soldiers)
Search our databases for your ancestors:- notes, family genealogies, notes, 35,000 confederate deaths, cemeteries, Revolutionary War Pensions absracted, biographical sketches, colonial settlers, passenger lists, Cherokee Indians in Georgia, Native Americans, 2,500 pages of abstracted county wills and administrations, bibles, obituaries, marriages, early school graduates and photographs (colleges and grammar schools), plantations, paupers, lunatics, orphans, maps, tips, and more.....

Personal Note: I apologize for my absence these last few months, but my Mother, who just celebrated her 85th birthday has not been doing well since she had a fall last October and since she is a very proud and independent lady she has insisted on staying in her own home and I have been driving back and forth to get her to her doctor appointments and to the grocery store and hither and yon for the other neccesities of life. But finally she is at least "considering" moving in with me. I've updated the Wallis Funeral Home information and added book 6 and I have about half of the 1870 census transcribed and ready to go online and hope to add an everyname index. Please be patient with me and remember us in your prayers. Thanks for your understanding. If you don't get a reply from the gacounty@bellsouth.net address, then write to our family address at osburn@bellsouth.net.
History of Walker County, Georgia
Walker County was formed in 1833 from Murray County, at this time the territory of Walker included not only it's present area, but all of Dade and a large part of Whitfield, Catoosa and Chattooga counties. In 1837 all of Walker's territory west of the top of Lookout Mountain was cut off and the county of Dade was established as the most northwestern county in the State. In 1838 another portion was cut off and the county of Chattooga was established. Then again in 1853, more territory was extracted and the county of Catoosa was formed. In 1853 and later in 1859 other portions of Walker County were used to make Whitfield County.

    Welcome!
Once information has been submitted to my web-site, the information remains under the ownership and control of the original compiler. If someone submits information, then comes back in 6 months and asks me to remove it, I will do so. The only information I will not pull is information I have compiled myself (mainly cemetery records). I have very little public information that is not currently on-line. What you see is what I have. On the other hand, I do have quite a few photographs and other small projects I am working to put on-line. Those projects are mainly photograph-based and do not contain much "hard data."
What I can do, and what I can't...
I do NOT have tourism information or real estate information online. My site is really for history and genealogy. You are welcome to post queries to my web-site for public viewing. I update the pages regularly and whenever possible.
I do not do personal lookups at courthouses, libraries, etc. Please contact the courthouse and / or the Bryan-Lang Library. They will charge about $10 an hour. The Bryan-Lang will usually do "basic" lookups for free - census records and such. However, don't hold me or them to that! Policies can change!
What I will do is "publish" information researchers have collected. I give researchers a place to meet, to exchange information, and to publish their information, for free, in a centrally located site.
