Jones County, Georgia
Jones County, originally part of Baldwin County, was created 10 December 1807. The 30th county formed in Georgia was named for James Jones of Savannah. He was a legislator at the age of 23, a member of the State Consitutional Convention in 1798, and a congressman.
Old Clinton, the first county site, was built in 1809. It was a center for New England settlers whose influence is reflected in the architecture of the town, where the houses stand close to the street. At one time, this was the fourth largest city in the state. However, Clinton was one of 187 inactive municipalities to lose its charter in 1995, as a result of a 1993 Act of the General Assembly.
In 1905, the county site was moved to Gray. This was the year the courthouse pictured above was erected. The architects were J. W. Glover and Company. The contractors were the Atlanta Fireproofing Company with Robert F. Hemphill (president and treasurer) and L. J. Isbell (vice-president and general manager). The county commissioners at the time were John T. Glover, J. H. Meeks, and J. H. C. Ethridge.
The town of Gray was originally known as James in honor of the man whose land it was on, James H. Blount. It was later changed to Gray to honor James Madison Gray, a major financier of the Confederacy.

This County, created by Act of the Legislature February 25, 1875, is named for the Oconee River which forms its eastern boundary. In 1801 Watkinsville was made County Site of Clarke County but in 1875 the Clarke County Site was changed to Athens. As a result indignant local citizens brought about the formation of Oconee County with Watkinsville as County Site. Among the first County Officers were: Sheriff Weldon M. Price, Clerk of Superior Court Jas. M.A. Johnson, Ordinary James R. Lyle, Tax Receiver David M. White, Tax Collector Robert R. Murray, Treasurer Thomas Booth, Coroner James Maulden and Surveyor Wm. E. Elder.

Georgia Genealogy
Georgia Genealogy is being developed as a genealogical and historical resource for your personal use. While the original thought was to provide this website as a resource for finding genealogy and historical data concerning Georgia on the web, we have begun adding specific data to this site for your personal use. In an attempt to further expand our offerings and refine your search, we have begun the creation of county websites. Those county sites can be found in the list of links to the right. While only a small portion of Georgia counties are presently listed, the amount of data for those counties is quite impressive. The "Search Georgia Genealogy" search on the right side will search all of the Georgia Genealogy website, but will not search the data linked to from our offsite data pages. New Genealogy and History Data: History: Military Connected States Family Tree Guide is a quick, simple and free way for you to share your family history. Within minutes, you can have a dynamically driven website that creatively portrays your family tree. Invest a little more time, and you can add pictures, stories, gravestone photos, and more to bring your family history alive. All for free! Visit

    WHITFIELD COUNTY,
    GEORGIA
Whitfield County was formed in 1851 from part of Murray County which lies on it's eastern boundary. Whitfield County lies in northwestern Georgia and is bordered by the Tennessee state line on it's northern side and by Catoosa, Walker, Gordon and Murray Counties, counterclockwise, on it's other boundaries. Whitfield, Georgia's 97th county was named after Reverend George Whitefield, an early settler of Georgia and the founder of the Bethesda Orphan House in Savannah. The spelling of the county name was later changed to reflect the way it was pronounced.
There are five towns within Whitfield County, these being the county seat, Dalton (formerly Cross Plains), Cohutta, Varnell, Tunnel Hill and Rocky Face. In 1990 the census for Whitfield County was 72,462 with Dalton having 21,761 residents.

This page is a brief review of my MOORE family of Southeastern Georgia, commonly called Wiregrass Georgia. These MOORE's are originally from Ireland, and settled in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and other parts of America. My MOORE connection is via my biological mother's mother (my grandmother) Bessie Estelle Moore . She was the daughter of Mathew Howard Moore b:1872 GA d:1944 FL and Rebecca Jane Sweat b:1873 GA d:1950 FL. They are buried in Seminole County, Florida. Mathew was the son of John Moore, V and Barbara Roberts . Bessie married George Baxter McMahan in Seminole County, Florida. My grandmother, Mrs. Bessie Moore McMahan, died June 1957 and was laid to rest in the LaGrange Cemetery in Titusville, Brevard County, Florida in an unmarked grave. There's more about the McMahan clan at this GeoCities page or go to my Worldconnect link ID " irisheyes " for the complete list of descendants with notes and census references to date. There may also be several "unlinked" MOORE in my notes at Worldconnect. Please let me know if you find your ancestors there and can add any further information on them. Perhaps together we can find many MOORE cousins!! :o)
