Population
About Oglethorpe County Oglethorpe County was created on December 19, 1793 entirely out of Wilkes County. It was named for General James Edward Oglethorpe, who founded the colony of Georgia, at Savannah, in 1733. A soldier and philanthropist, Oglethorpe created the colony as an asylum for British debtors. He remained in Georgia for nine years and drove the invading Spanish troops back into Florida. He returned to England in 1742 and died there in 1785.
James Edward Oglethorpe T he area that encompasses Oglethorpe County was originally inhabited primarily by the Creek and Cherokee tribes. It was opened to settlement by a treaty with the tribes in 1771. These "Ceded Lands", as the area was called, became Wilkes County in 1777. In 1793, a northwestern portion of Wilkes County was cut aside to form the new county of Oglethorpe.

Rabun Co., GA was created on December 21, 1819 from lands ceded by the Cherokee Nation and from part of Habersham Co., GA . It was named after William Rabun, who served as the 11th Governor of Georgia from his election in 1817 until his death in 1819. The county seat, Clayton, was incorporated on December 13, 1823 and was named after the first Judge of the Superior Court in Rabun County, the Honorable Augustus S. Clayton, who later became a Congressman. In 1856, Towns Co., GA was created from parts of Rabun and Union Counties. While Clayton is the largest town in the county, it is not by far the only attraction Rabun County has to offer. The beautiful foothills that make up the area landscape have been a haven for tourists and naturalists since the late 19th century. Today, 60% of the land is in National Forests and Parks. Another 20% or so is held by Georgia Power and the rest is in private hands. This division allows plenty of room for the enterprising explorer who wishes to taste a little of the wilderness that must have existed two centuries ago, well before the influx of European settlers. Other area towns are Dillard, Rabun Gap, Sky Valley and Mtn. City in the north end of the county and Tiger, Lakemont, Wiley and Tallulah Falls to the south. The Persimmon community is to the west of Clayton, out Hwy. 76 towards Towns County, and Chechero is to the east on the same road. Also to the east is the Satolah community, off Warwoman Road near Highlands, NC.

    Who Are We?
What Do We Have? How May We Help You? Where Are We? ... Want to Be Involved?
    Before you begin
Welcome to the world of genealogy! When compiling a family history, remember that any piece of information, oral or written, which links a name, place and date together may help you in establishing kinship lines. As you begin to gather data, record it on preprinted forms (genealogical charts and family group sheets) or use one of the many commercial computer programs available.
For each ancestor, try to determine the following: birth place and date; parents; when and where they attended churches, synagogues, and schools; occupation; when, where, and to whom married; names of children and when and where children were born; death date, death place, and burial place.
Cite the source for all information. A photocopy of a document is of little value unless you know where the original is located. When citing original records at the Georgia Archives, we recommend the following formats:
    • For original governmental records : (Georgia Archives, Record GroupSub GroupSeries Numbers and Series Title. For example: Georgia Archives, RG 4-2-46, File II Names.)
