Agland's Newsletter 2002 Agland Investment Services Newsletter Dear Clients and Friends, The start of a new year gives one pause to look back, although this will be a brief pause, as we are moving quickly into 2003 with a full house of new projects to implement and proposals in preparation. Many have asked, "Where is the Agland newsletter?" as we skipped our 2001 issue. A lot of exciting things have happened since 2000; we encourage you to read on. As you know, Agland has been involved in many economic development projects, and we are often asked, "What do foreign aid and economic development projects accomplish?" To answer this question, examples are useful. Aggressive military action in Afghanistan in 2001 at a cost of $7-8 billion (and many lives) provided a good example of what can happen when a war torn country is abandoned and a power vacuum is created. If $1 billion had been spent over 2 or 3 years on a broad economic development program, it is likely that a war would have not been required. We firmly believe that well-spent foreign aid saves our country money over time and can do much to encourage peace and stability in the world. We all witnessed the excesses of the dot-com world. One of the bigger busts was in the food industry with the demise of Wine.com, once the largest Internet retailer, ending with an auction of a million-bottle inventory at distressed prices. After $200 million in venture capital investment, the company ended with $3 million in assets and $25 million in liabilities. Of course this is "small potatoes" compared to the collapse of the home grocery delivery start-up, Webvan. One has to wonder just how, as a manager, you do this in a relatively short period of time. Reality is often painful.

General Production Information
Georgia and South Carolina rank 2 nd and 3 rd , respectively, in U.S. peach production. Annual production for the combined Georgia and South Carolina peach crops (NASS, 1997–2001) averages 226 million lbs, with an average value of $63 million. Together, Georgia and South Carolina account for 25% of the nation’s fresh peach acreage. The Georgia and South Carolina peach crops are grown almost exclusively for fresh sales. Wholesale grower-shippers, who sell primarily to chain stores, market over 90% of the crop. Both Georgia and South Carolina wholesale grower-shippers view themselves as facets of a single production area, as most use the same brokers and ship to the same markets. Roadside and local sales are next in importance. Processing, primarily for baby food, is limited, accounting for less than 1% of sales. Production Regions Peach production is clustered in areas where quality orchard sites offer some measure of freedom from spring frosts, and soils that support good tree growth and orchard longevity. Middle Georgia’s Fort Valley plateau and South Carolina’s Ridge area are the epicenters of production in the two-state area. Collectively, they account for ca. 70% of the bearing acreage in the two states. Significant production is also found in Georgia’s Brooks County (southwest GA) and in South Carolina’s piedmont region (northwest SC). Smaller areas of production are in west central and southeast Georgia and additional scattered production in the north central part of the state. South Carolina has small production areas in the coastal plain and sand hills regions.

Community reaches out to make the holidays special By Amy Jenkins When five children live in a one-bedroom apartment, the father gets laid off work and the mother only makes a small income, putting food on the table and paying rent often take priority over buying gifts during the holidays. Celebrating the holidays also becomes nearly impossible when a mother is killed in a car accident and the grandmother takes over raising the family. And when parents get a divorce and there is no longer a joint income, the holiday season takes on a different feel. This is reality for several families at Willow Glen's Schallenberger Elementary School. And because similar circumstances exist throughout the Bay Area, organizations such as InnVision and The Family Giving Tree are working hard to make wishes come true this holiday season.
School spirit When second-grade teacher Kathy Argabright saw this great need among families at her school last year, she became involved with the Adopt-A-Family program. The Insurance Underwriters Association found people to buy gifts for 20 families on her list, and when teachers and staff agreed to participate and help the others on the list, 19 more families, with a total of 62 children, received gifts.

BATON ROUGE, La. - Fast-growing insurance holding company Direct General Corp. says that it will add as many as 1,550 jobs in expanding its Baton Rouge, La., policy-processing center.
Direct General Chairman and CEO William Adair gathered Friday with state and local officials at the Greater Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce for a press announcement, hurriedly convened to get the news out before the long July 4th holiday weekend.
The Nashville, Tenn.-based company is moving to a bigger building to accommodate its far larger local work force, Adair said. Currently, Direct General has 439 employees in a 90,000-sq.-ft. (8,100-sq.-m.) Baton Rouge facility that it leases.
The company laid out its hiring timetable in its application for a grant from the Louisiana Economic Development Corp. (LEDC). Direct General said that it plans to add 500 jobs in its first year at the new site, adding 519 positions in its second year and 531 more in its third.

In addition, Procter said studies show that children involved in shopping for and selecting foods are more likely to accept and eat those foods. Emily Mark, a K-State Research and Extension family and consumer sciences specialist, said parents can even let their children spend their own money to buy something at the market "They learn how to select the tomato and what is a quality tomato, but they also learn to budget their money," Mark said.

MJ: We’re here with Ms. Eleanor Pratt in Atlanta, Georgia. Thank you, Ms. Pratt, for inviting us into your home and answering our questions. MJ: Could you tell us a little about yourself and where you grew up? MJ: And what time period would this have been? EP: Well, I was in, I had a belated career in attendance in college. I had worked see with these two firms in Chattanooga for a number of years and then I went to, graduated from college in 1957, so it was then that I went to Clarksville. After an interview with the superintendent, he offered me the job. And I was real excited about it because it was going to be challenging and fun and a way to learn more. I had majored in institution management so here was an opportunity for me to show what I had learned, whether or not it could be put into use in a supervisory position. I am not sure I answered your question about the time. MJ: Yes, would it have been the 50s, the 60s?
