The Georgia Automated Environmental Monitoring Network was established in 1991 by the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences of the University of Georgia. The objective of the AEMN is to collect reliable weather information for agricultural and environmental applications. Each station monitors air temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, solar radiation, wind speed, wind direction, and soil temperature at 2, 4, and 8 inch depths every 1 second. Data are summarized at 15 minute intervals and at midnight a daily summary is calculated. A microcomputer at the Georgia Experiment Station initiates telephone calls to each station periodically and downloads the recorded data.

You may participate in the Georgia Higher Education Savings Plan by payroll deduction. The program, known as a 529 Plan and administered by TIAA-CREF , allows you to set aside money for higher education expenses - for your children, grandchildren, or other beneficiaries of your choice (including yourself). Under current law, any earnings grow tax-free in the account and are tax-free when withdrawn and used for education purposes. You may also be eligible for a State tax deduction for such contributions.
Participation in the Georgia plan does not mean that the beneficiary must attend college in Georgia; the fund may be used for qualified higher Ed expenses at accredited postsecondary institutions across the country. Accounts can be opened with as little as $15 and have high allowable total limits (more than $200,000). A variety of investment options are available.

Education Resources Through Sanctuary educational and interpretive programs, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration seeks to broaden public awareness and understanding of the marine resources at Gray's Reef. Direct access to the reef itself requires experience in open-ocean diving, thus limiting the opportunity for a firsthand encounter with the Sanctuary environment. For this reason, the educational programs focus on land-based interpretive themes and exhibits. Educational Materials Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary sponsors community outreach marine programs, public seminars, presentations and exhibits. Education publications include: an illustrated fish guide educational handbooks useful to teachers interested in a marine curriculum and a new Northern Right Whale curriculum Gray's Reef teacher intern from Bartlett Middle School created two parts for our homepage.
