Educational or Placement Options Educational or placement options vary across the country, but no matter what your choices are, you must do some digging to find out everything you can about the options available in your school district. Following are examples of placement options.
Regular classroom: The student is kept within an age-appropriate class. The classroom teacher is responsible for monitoring progress. The child receives no special support outside the regular class.
Ask : What accommodations will be offered? How will his identified special needs be met? Will he be given pre-teaching review or re-teaching of skills and concepts? What training has the teacher received to address my child's needs? How will his progress be monitored? What will be different about this situation than his classroom learning before he was considered exceptional?
Modified program in the regular classroom setting: This is sometimes called an adapted program.

Abstinence Education Proves Effective In Georgia
Teen pregnancy rates decline 41% after state adopts policy mandating abstinence education in public schools
ATLANTA, May 18, 2005 The latest data also suggests this trend is continuing; from 2002-2003, there was a five percent decline in teen pregnancy in Georgiadouble the national rate of decline for the same time period. The decline in teen pregnancy and corresponding teen births has curbed spending of taxpayer money for related support services. Based on an estimated $10,000 per teen mom, Georgians experienced a cost savings of over $100 million. Abstinence-based education is one of the key components credited by the DHR for these outstanding results. Prior to 1994, contraceptive education was the main prevention focus in Georgia. However, in 1994 the Georgia Department of Education established a policy mandating abstinence education in public school systems, a direction that has been supported by both Democratic and Republican administrations. Parental involvement through sex education review committees chaired by involved parents was also established to supervise the selection and application of sex education programs in each school district. Teen pregnancy rates began declining in 1995 and have continued every year since. To read the full Georgia DHR press release or about other related abstinence industry news, please visit

Abstinence-Only Sex Education? Not in My Backyard!
by Nancy Hatch Woodward
Are kids who have sex before marriage six times more likely to kill themselves? Of course not, but an abstinence-only sex education curriculum called Choosing the Best presents this lie as fact to young people. In DeKalb County, GA, one of five counties that make up metropolitan Atlanta, more than 50 parents are challenging Choosing the Best , the school district's new abstinence-only sex education curriculum. "As soon as I saw the article in the school newsletter about the presentation of this curriculum, I was determined to attend this meeting even if I was the only parent who would speak up." Lynn Cherry Grant, a member of the DeKalb County School Board, says that about three years ago the state of Georgia took sex education out of the science curriculum and put it in the physical health and fitness curriculum. At the middle-school level, says Grant, the nine-day

Our pre-service teachers completed an assessment that included questions concerning their own level of technology use and comfort as well as their perceptions of technology as a learning tool, and their beliefs as to its relative importance. They were then given the same surveys at the end of the semester and a comparative study was done. The same surveys were sent to recent graduates for a comparative study, to see if we are making a difference. When the evaluation was conducted:
A pre-survey was given in August 1999. It was given again in January 2000 and a third time in September 2000. Faculty classroom observations of these pre-service teachers were looked at as well as the course syllabi. Who conducted the evaluation:
An external evaluator from the Applied Research Center. Type of data collected:
Self-evaluation, observation and portfolio assessment.
