For Grandparents and Special Others Raising Children Georgia Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children A State Fact Sheet August 2002 Across the country, more than six million children approximately 1 in 12 children are living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. Georgia has more than 113,000 children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. In many of these households, grandparents and other relatives are the primary caregivers (“kinship caregivers”) for children whose parents cannot or will not care for them due to substance abuse, illness and death, abuse and neglect, economic hardship, incarceration, divorce, domestic violence, and other family and community crises. In response to the growing numbers of these kinship care families, state legislatures, public and private agencies, and grassroots coalitions in Georgia and across the country have begun to expand services and supports for children living with kin inside and outside of the foster care system.
A Look at the Numbers: Kinship Care in Georgia The data below show the numbers of grandparents who are living in households with at least one grandchild under the age of 18, as well as the numbers of grandparents who are the primary caregivers for these grandchildren. These numbers were reported by the 2000 U.S. Census and are available for every place (as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau) in the country, including cities, towns, villages, and boroughs, on the U.S. Census website.*

Parent Involvement in Promoting Arts Education

Georgia PTA and the California State PTA stand out among the many state PTAs that have championed arts in education through programs and advocacy. Georgia PTA, in addition to participating in the Reflections Program, presents the Ann Weeks Music Award and the Performing Arts Award. The Ann Weeks Music Award was established in 1977 in honor of a past Georgia PTA president to provide monetary support for students pursuing training in music. The Performing Arts Award recognizes the talent of young performers in the areas of dance and theater. The recipients of both awards, chosen based on their performance, are recognized at the Georgia PTA Annual Awards Ceremony held each April in Atlanta. Visit Georgia PTA's website for more information about Georgia PTA's arts in education programs. The California State PTA and the California Alliance for Arts Education (CAAE) launched a statewide campaign—Arts Learning in Action—to celebrate Arts Education Month in March. Schools and school districts throughout California highlighted arts learning in education through performances, exhibits, and classroom demonstrations. The objective of the Arts Learning in Action campaign was to raise awareness among state, county, and local elected officials about the essential value of arts education in schools by inviting decision makers and elected officials into classrooms to experience learning in the arts firsthand. The campaign is a key component of SMARTS—Bring Back the Arts, the California State PTA's overarching program to encourage arts education.

From tots to teens, school can often be a challenge for the adopted child. Sometimes it's "simply" a matter of educating the educators about adoption, diversity, inclusion, language, and special educational needs. Sometimes you need to go further and tackle deeply held traditional practices and policies. Either way, ADOPTION AND THE SCHOOLS will help you and your child's teachers make school a better place for your adopted child.

It gives them the tools to deal with possibly awkward situations and provides resources for integrating lessons about family diversity into the standard curriculum. Every family with school-aged adopted children needs a copy of this book to educate the educators.
