Some Schools Adding Evolution 'Alternatives' to Social Studies Class

Sep 21 2005 - Education Week (Requires free registration)
As debates over the legitimacy of intelligent design and other alternatives to evolution erupt across the country, some school and elected officials are suggesting that social studies, humanities, or comparative religion classes offer the best venues for those discussions. Public officials or school board candidates in several states, including New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Utah, have considered the social studies option. The appeal of the option has been limited, and most debate about how to teach life’s origins has focused on science classrooms.
Science Panel's Democrats Offer Math, Science Resources

Sep 21 2005 - Education Week (Requires free registration)
Science teachers and students can gain access to online math and science resources from several federal agencies, thanks to Democrats on the House Science Committee. The lawmakers have established a link from their website to a link called “Science Education and You.” That link takes visitors to a page with model lesson plans and other resources, divided by grade level. The resources come from the Department of Energy, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Science Foundation, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Other links enable students to ask scientists questions and offer activities.

Reducing the Dropout Rate
E. Gregory Woods Increasingly, it is being recognized that the issues of dropping out and dropout prevention cannot be separated from issues affecting our total economic and social structure. These issues include poverty, unemployment, discrimination, the role of the family, social values, the welfare cycle, child abuse, and drug abuse.
Peck, Law, and Mills 1987, p. 3
Introduction
School Completion, Goal 2 of the National Goals for Education, states: "By the year 2000, the high school graduation rate will increase to at least 90 percent." This high-visibility goal spotlights a problem which has persisted for over two decades. Youth who drop out of school are predicted to be an even larger problem in the future (OERI 1987). Dropping out is a complex social problem for which there is no simple solution. Focusing attention on fixing one part of the problem calls attention to the need for solutions to many other parts as well. Thus, many educators and others concerned with the dropout problem are advocating policies involving a broad range of institutions and agencies (e.g., Hargroves 1987).
Definition
Who are America's dropouts?. Different definitions of dropouts, different time periods during the school year when dropout data are collected, different data collection methods, different ways of tracking youth no longer in school, and different methods used by school districts and states to calculate the dropout rate, result in unreliable aggregated national dropout figures.

School Nurse Role in Bioterrorism Emergency Preparedness and Response. Position Statement. Revised. http://www.nasn.org/positions/2005psbioterrorism.pdf (National Association of School Nurses. , Jun 2005) It is the position of the National Association of School Nurses that school nurses should be designated and recognized as first responders to mass casualty emergencies, including those resulting from bioterrorist events. School nurses should be trained in protection, detection, and treatment of victims of such events and in the command and control management techniques of the logistics of such a situation. The strategic position of well-prepared nurses within the school environment has significant potential for minimizing the effects of a bioterrorist attack in school settings and, subsequently, in the community at large 3p.
