Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. "Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, we're free at last!" Sonny Perdue had a right to gloat on election night. Outspent 6 to 1, he had ousted a heavily favored incumbent to become Georgia's first Republican governor in 130 years. Yet there was something about his victory celebration that made it seem even more surreal than his improbable triumph. Perhaps it was the fact that his exultant declaration of deliverance is universally associated with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. (though it originates from an old spiritual). After all, the shocking and subterranean nature of Perdue's upset had immediately been credited to a backlash against incumbent Democratic Gov. Roy Barnes, who played a role in removing the Confederate battle emblem from the Georgia state flag. King and the Confederacy don't seem to mix, though they were once honored with the same holiday in some Southern states.

Tim Renick Awarded University System of Georgia Board of Regents’ Teaching Excellence Award
This interview appeared in Religious Studies News–AAR Edition , October 2004 (17:4). Aquinas for Armchair Theologians , was published by Westminster John Knox Press in January 2002. RSN Dr. Renick, we understand that the University System of Georgia Board of Regents recently awarded you with its Teaching Excellence Award. Would you tell us about the award? Is there more than one recipient in any given year? Renick: I am very honored to have been the recipient of the Board of Regents’ Teaching Excellence Award. The award is the highest recognition given to teachers within the state system. It is given annually to the outstanding teacher among almost 30,000 professors and instructors. Candidates are nominated by their home institution, and a statewide panel of chairs, faculty members, and administrators determines winners. There are separate awards given annually to the outstanding teacher in research institutions (e.g., UGA, Georgia Tech, GSU, Georgia Southern) and non-research institutions (e.g., Georgia Perimeter College, DeKalb College). RSN What do you think distinguished you to be the recipient of this award?

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Denise Majette picked up the endorsement of Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin Saturday, while opponent Cliff Oxford questioned Majette's loyalty to the Democratic Party and criticized her on taxes. Oxford and Majette met for the first of two final televised debates before the Tuesday runoff election. The debate at WSB-TV was a calm affair, though a few sparks flew when the candidates were asked for their positions on a national sales tax. EMAIL THIS

"It's one of those things that needs to be looked at, because we do need to make significant changes to the tax code," said Majette. Oxford shot back: "I'm a little shocked that Ms. Majette would advocate a national sales tax. This is something that is put forth by the extreme right wing of the Republican Party that protects the wealthy . . . Is she a Republican?"

An important part of the curriculum at the Institute for African American Studies is devoted to creative research on the lives and work of prominent African Americans and to placing them within their cultural context. Benjamin Banneker
Benjamin Banneker's Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia Almanack and Epheremis, published during the years 1792-1797. He retired from tobacco farming to concentrate wholly upon his studies. He corresponded with Thomas Jefferson and urged Jefferson to work for the abolition of slavery.
Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth, a nationally known speaker on human rights for slaves and women, was born Isabella Baumfree, a slave in Hurley, New York, and spoke only Dutch during her childhood. Sold and resold, denied her choice in husband, and treated cruelly by her masters, Truth ran away in 1826, leaving all but one of her children behind. After her freedom was bought for $25, she moved to New York City in 1829 and became a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. In 1853, she helped form a utopian community called "The Kingdom," at Sing Sing, New York, which was soon disbanded following the death and possible murder of its leader. Truth was implicated in the scandal but courageously fought the falsehoods aimed at her. After the death of her son, she took the name Sojourner Truth to signify her new role as traveler telling the truth about slavery. She set out on June 1, 1843, walking for miles in a northeasterly direction with 25 cents in her pocket, and rested only when she found lodging offered by either rich or poor. First she attended religious meetings, then began to hold meetings herself that would bring audience members to tears. As she logged mile after mile, her fame grew and her reputation preceded her. Truth's popularity was enhanced by her biography written by the abolitionist Olive Gilbert, with a preface written by William Lloyd Garrison. In 1864, she was invited to the White House, where President Abraham Lincoln personally received her. Later she served as a counselor for the National Freedman's Relief Association, retiring in 1875 to Battle Creek, Michigan.

ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF HISTORIC PRESERVATION IN GEORGIA
Phase One A Case Study: Rome, Georgia
Located in Northwest Georgia at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains, the City of Rome serves as the seat of Floyd County and as the regional center for a six-county area. With a population of approximately 30,000, Rome is a mid-size Georgia city - one of the first in the state to actively promote historic preservation. Preservation activity reveals itself in the adoption of a historic preservation ordinance, establishment of a historic preservation commission, designation of local and national historic districts, participation in downtown revitalization programs, and renovation and adaptive use of historic buildings. These measures indicate that Rome's citizenry and local government recognize the potential benefits of recycling and reinvestment, which is demonstrated by successful projects such as H. Richard's Clothiers. Rome is one of three communities selected as a trial site for a study designed to quantify the economic benefits of historic preservation in the state of Georgia. Based on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's methodology, the study focuses upon the economic and fiscal impacts of historic preservation on a community. Benefits are measured in three economic areas: real estate activity, construction activity, and commercial activity. The study provides documentation that historic preservation contributes financially to a community and that preservation activities also serve to maintain and reinforce the economic position of the community.
