Georgia churches look to Virginia for affiliation by 'affinity'
By Robert Dilday Associated Baptist Press RICHMOND, Va. - First Baptist Church of Rome, Ga., is considering ending its affiliation with the Georgia Baptist Convention and joining the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV), whose Richmond headquarters are 600 miles away. And two other North Georgia churches are exploring possible links with the BGAV. The 1,800-member congregation in Rome, about 75 miles north of Atlanta, will vote on the issue March 13, said Joel Snider, pastor of the church. The move is unusual for Southern Baptist churches, which almost universally affiliate with conventions in their states or region. But it represents a growing interest in denominational links by affinity rather than geography, say some observers. First Baptist of Rome, which ordains women as deacons and supports the moderate Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF), has increasingly found itself out of step with the conservative Georgia Baptist Convention, which frowns on both. The Virginia convention, however, includes many churches with women deacons and ministers and it assists congregations that want to channel funds to the CBF. "In looking around at our options, we found the BGAV's principles are very much like our own," said Snider.

MACEDONIA
CHURCH HISTORY
by William Archibald Touchton Tradition has it that Macedonia was organized as a Church in 1848, just 100 years ago (being read in 1948). Official records, however, reach back only to 1858. Were there records kept for the previous 10 years, they have long since disappeared.
During the first forty years her members met for worship in an old log building located on the west side of the Alapaha river near the old Lee bridge. It was here that the Rev. C. Howell, R. Friar, R.S. Harvey and other devoted "Men of God" preached to the Adams, Howells, Touchtons, Roberts, Fenders, Tomlinsons and others of the original settlers, inspiring them to seek the better way of life.
Macedonia was a pioneer's Church, its first members had but recently saw trouble with Billy Bowlegs and his Indian followers. Having just returned from driving the red men to their reservation in the Florida Everglades, they met to give thanks to God for their new freedom from the Indian threat, - and Macedonia was born.
Having looked to God for guidance in their lives, they soon realized the value of joining with their neighbors along each side of the river south to the Florida line in forming a unit of county government, and Echols County was born with the county seat at Troublesome, later known as Statenville, in 1958.

An Old Preacher’s Experience In Letters To My Son Number 1 You have often and earnestly request me to give you some account of my life, and especially my knowledge of the history of the Disciple in Georgia as I have since the year 1833 preached in 39 counties in Georgia, and 4 counties in South Carolina, and 6 counties in Alabama, and 4 counties in Tennessee, and immersed believers in the lord in each of these States. Have been immersing candidates since the year 1836. Am very sorry that I have failed to keep an account of the great numbers that I have immerse, many of whom are gone long since to the spirit-land; and many have moved to the far West. But as you wanted to know something of my early history; I was born the 4 th of September, 1813, in Rockingham County, North Carolina, and came to Clarke County, Georgia, in 1831. I had but very little education; at intervals went to the old fields-schools as they were called; learned to read, write, and studied arithmetic – say half way through the arithmetic. Had access to say half dozen books only, and no newspapers. The people where I was raised were poor, and scarcely anybody at that time took a newspaper. I never had free access to newspapers till 1834. In the year 1834 I married your mother in the county of Wilkes, Georgia, who is now

History of the Baptists in Georgia, 1733 to Present
        Table of Contents
        Introduction.
From our beginnings, Baptists have actively favored the Lordship of Christ, the authority of the Bible rather than ecclesiastical tradition, believer's baptism, the priesthood of all believers, the gathered and congregational church, local church autonomy that encourages associationalism/ connectionalism, the separation of church and state, and religious liberty. Nevertheless, from virtually the start here in Georgia, diversity has also marked our denominational lifea fact that will be made clear as this essay continues. It seems that, in this state as elsewhere, the only time that Baptist is singular is when we are talking about one Baptist.
        Early Baptists.
In 1733, one or two Baptists arrived on the boat with James Oglethorpe: William Calvert, a lay preacher, and his wife, who might have shared his faith. Others soon followed, totaling probably fewer than 140 by 1770. In 1772 the first continuing Baptist church, Kiokee near Appling, was founded; twelve years later the first Baptist association in the state, the Georgia Association, appeared. As the new century opened, there were about 4,700 Baptists, gathered in 72 churches, with 3 district associations that included 90 percent of the total Baptist population. When the new nation was formed in 1776, about .52 percent of all Georgians were Baptist. In 1800 the figure stood at about 3 percent.[1]
