Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program
Links to Approved Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program Georgia is experiencing a shortage of teachers for elementary and secondary schools in all areas of the state. The local school systems, colleges and universities, the Regional Education Service Agencies (RESAs) and the Professional Standards Commission are responding to the expected 2001-2002 shortage with the introduction of the Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program. The Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program is a classroom based preparation option for individuals with the basic qualifications to teach in elementary, middle or secondary schools who have not completed a teacher preparation program. The program is not intended as a replacement for the preparation that a teacher receives in a regular college teacher preparation program. It is instead an additional option for individuals who hold the bachelor’s or higher degrees but who have not completed teacher education requirements for state certification. The Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program Description:
  • Phase One - An instructional phase offered as an introduction to teaching, prior to assignment as a teacher in a classroom.

ALTERNATIVE PREPARATION PROGRAM
Goal The goal of the alternative preparation program is to provide a University, RESA, and Public Schools collaborative non-traditional option for prospective post-baccalaureate teacher candidates to acquire the critical and essential knowledge and skills necessary for successful entry into the classroom. Description This model requires that teacher candidates complete an intensive preparation program of approximately four weeks during the summer prior to entering the classroom in the fall. Additionally, it requires intensive monitoring, supervision and mentoring during a two-year induction period. (The model could be adjusted to accommodate teachers hired on provisional status after the school year has begun. In this model, the time required for pre-assignment training will be shortened with training classes held after school hours.) The collaborative unit including the teacher preparation unit of a college or university, a RESA, and the cooperating public schools will be responsible for implementing the program and for recommending candidates for initial certification. Program Components and Description Components:
  • Candidate Selection Criteria Pre-Assignment Instruction Induction Post-Assignment
  • The first phase will consist of approximately 140 clock hours of classroom instruction in pedagogical skills that are integrated with the teaching content field. As an example, instruction will focus on curriculum planning and strategies for teaching science, math, etc. Field experiences will be integrated into the preparation training. Classroom observations of experienced teachers providing instructional assistance to individual students, and mini-lesson presentations during the summer "pre-assignment institute," will be required by placing and supervising candidates in summer school situations.

"O'Keeffe's academic success is based on quality teaching, personalized support for all students, and a steadfast focus on student achievement." Patrick Delmore, Principal "As O'Keeffe's PTG President, I can say through experience that all O'Keeffe educators uphold a standard of excellence. Led by Dr. Delmore, our teachers are professionals dedicated to the advancement of every kid. They, and to a great degree our parents, are available, committed, and caring. Walk our halls and you will quickly see and feel why this school works on all levels for all kids." Mike Park, PTO president OVERVIEW:
O'Keeffe Middle School is a grade 6-8 school of 410 students. Approximately 35% of our students are in poverty, 40% are minority group members, 20% are Exceptional Educational Needs (EEN) students, and 7% are English Language Learner (ELL) students. Factors contributing to our academic achievement include abolishing tracking in grades 6 and 7 math classes; giving all students access to a higher quality, more demanding curriculum; including virtually all special education students in regular education classes all the time (eliminating or reducing "pull-out" classes); and focusing staff development efforts on teaching reading in all content areas. We also disaggregate all standardized test data and use information gained to adjust our instructional focus. The most powerful factor in our success has been the quality instruction provided by a dedicated staff working together in regular and special education teaching teams.
