Welcome Message
Greetings,
Now that you have some days to think about the summer tutorials, can those of you who are definite about signing up, or even just interested, please email to Svetlana (svetlana@math) your level of interest (definite, highly possible, maybe) with an indication of which tutorial you want? We would like to get a rough head count of the level of participation.
Please do this ASAP (after some aimless procrastination) to help out with our planning. We haven't set a final deadline for joining up, but even so, we need to be able to make plans, so help us out. However, if you are definite, then say so and you will be guaranteed a slot.
Assuming sufficient interest, we will be running three tutorials this summer.
  • Special functions and their many guises in number theory and geometry: by Izzet Coskun (coskun@fas)
  • Complex dynamics: led by Laura DeMarco (demarco@math)
  • Hyperbolic geometry in 2 and 3 dimensions: led by David Dumas (ddumas@fas)

They will meet in the evenings so as not to interfere with any day time obligations that you might have; they will most probably meet twice per week for six weeks or so, starting the week of July 1. As with last year's tutorials, they will not count for Harvard University credit nor Math Concentration credit, but the final paper can be used for the 5 page, junior paper requirement. You will also receive a 'stipend' of $600 for attending the tutorial. This is not enough to live on (unless you sleep in the Cambridge Common and eat only oatmeal), so you should arrange some other activities for the summer in Cambridge. Also, you will be responsible for your own lodging, etc. Our tutorial program has no official university affiliation and no obligation to take care of you during the summer.

Welcome Message Greetings,
I am writing to officially announce the 2003 version of our Summer Tutorial program. The idea here is to offer you some interesting mathematics if you have an ulterior motive for being in the Boston area during July and the beginning of August. In particular, the tutorials will run for six weeks starting roughly at the beginning of July, meeting twice per week in the evenings (so as not to interfere with day time jobs). The precise starting dates and meeting times will be arranged for the convenience of the participants once the tutorial rosters are set.
The format will be much like that of the term time tutorials, with the tutorial leader lecturing in the first few meetings and students lecturing later on. Here, I should say that these tutorials have no official Harvard status, so you won't receive either Harvard or concentration credit for them. Moreover, enrollment in the tutorial does not qualify you for any Harvard related perks (such as a place to live). However, the Math Department will pay each student participant a stipend of $700 and you can hand in your final paper from the tutorial for you junior 5-page paper requirement.
If there is sufficient interest, we will be offering 5 tutorials this summer; the topics and leaders are as follows:

Sourced from java3d-interest list. The original question asked was: Calling the Triangulator constructor with an argument of 1 (EARS_RANDOM) will produce a different triangulation than that produced by GeometryInfo on its own, so the Triangulator object obviously does do something, but it seems that the default Triangulator (with no arguments to the constructor) just produces the same results as if it hadn't been called at all. The reply posted by Paul Pantera of Sun is: To further expand this, the NormalGenerator and Stripifier only work on indexed triangles. Therefore, no matter what format your data is in, it will be converted to indexed triangles if you call the NormalGenerator or Stripfier. This is hidden from the user. If you send in quads and call the stripfier, you will get triangle strips out, and you won't know that your quads were converted to indexed triangles in the interim. So the answer to your question is yes, you don't need to call the triangulator explicitly (unless you want to specify the earOrder) because it gets called automatically when POLYGON_ARRAY data is used. Does it hurt to call it explicitly? Not much. The triangulator is smart enough to do nothing if the input data is already triangles.
