Lesson 1 - Labelling angles, recognizing parallel and perpendicular lines
Introduction
Students assemble in the lab and are arranged for a demonstration of Geometer's Sketchpad. Students are questioned about some of the problems of doing Geometry with a pencil and paper. Some of the ideas elicited should indicate the difficulty of making accurate drawings.
Geometer's Sketchpad is introduced as a tool to make the creation of geometric figures easier, faster, and more accurate. A quick demonstration is done of how to draw a square. While drawing, students are asked how they know it is square. Angles and length are confirmed. Students are informed that today they will learn the basic tools, create angles, parallel, and perpendicular lines.
Development
Students, each at a computer are guided through the basic tools of Geometer's Sketchpad. These tools include the Select Arrow, Point Tool, Compass Tool, Straightedge tool, and Text Tool.

Literature Connection: Ovals, Rectangles, Squares, and Triangles by Jennifer S. Burke
Mathematical Strand: Geometry
Topic: Students will identify geometrical shapes displayed in photographs of everyday objects in a metropolitan setting Grade level:
Lesson created by: Marla Schmidt, Lee Elementary School, Manhattan, KS
Lesson Description:
Materials The book Ovals, Rectangles, Squares, Triangles by Jennifer S. Burke, concrete examples of real life geometric objects, index cards, rulers, and pencils.
1. Launch the lesson-Engage. Read the books together as a class. Highlight the important shapes identified in the various photographs. Discuss the correct terminology for related geometric figures. Include terms for combining, subdividing and changing shapes. Allow students to share examples of shapes they have seen in their everyday environments. List their responses on the chalkboard or overhead projector. One category or designated shape at a time is preferable to distinguish specific characteristics.
2. Developing the lesson As a class, continue to brainstorm a list of geometric figures and terms that can represent with a basic sketch or drawing. List these on the chalkboard or overhead. Terms may include some of the following: oval, circle, square, rectangle, triangle, right angle, obtuse angle, acute angle, rhombus, diameter, perpendicular lines, etc.

Cale Hoppe, ED381 Problem Solving/ Holistic Lesson Plan: Paper Structure District Aim: Students will discover the importance and applicability of geometry in their surroundings. Grade Level Goals: Students will recognize geometric relationships in buildings and structures around them. Students will be able to reason why structures around them are made the way they are, and will be able to apply these concepts. Grade Level: High School or Middle School Objectives: Cognitive: Students will evaluate the created shelters by comparing and contrasting them. They will be able to note observations and relate the experience to real-life scenarios. Affective: Students will be able to use their creativity to create the shelter. They will be in control of its appearance, minus the restrictions given in the instructions, and use their imaginations to create viable designs. They will be asked to justify their decisions in constructing the shelter the way they did. And, students will use teamwork to complete the project. Physical: Project statement: Students will construct a shelter based on their present geometric background.

    Lesson Plan
This is what we did to present Chaos Theory to a class of High School Geometry Students
    1. First, we talked about the background of chaos, ie. who invented it, how it was discovered, etc... 2. Then, we gave some examples of chaos that were found in plants. The examples that we presented were a head of broccoli, and a fern leaf. Both of these are fractals that continually repeat forever. These examples can be found in picture form for the brocolli head and the fern leaf 3. Thirdly, we talked about how Chaos is applied in the real world. We gave two examples of the applications, although there are millions of others that we didn't talk about. We talked about the chaotic nature of the stock market and how the coastline of Britain is infinitely long. 4. To finish up our presentation, we fielded questions from the students before playing the Chaos Game with them, found on our activities page.
