Subject: geometry patterns lesson plans hi,,, my name is Vicki and I am a new 5th grade teacher. (I taught 2nd for 23 years.) So this math is different, and a little more difficult to teach than what I was used to. My only source is the text, and our prinicipal has requested that try to get away from using that. But with 5 other subjects to teach, and not being familiar with this math yet, I'm kind of at a loss.. Anyway, I'm supposed to come up with a lesson plan to
  • Explore patterns that result from cominations of "reflections, rotations, and translations of geometric figures.
The plan is to include:
  • writing/metacognition, assessment strategies, interdisciplanary connections, supplemental materials, or textbook, and Bloom's taxonomy level.
Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Vicki (katieb@bright.net Hi Vicki
Instead of Pattern Blocks you can use Geoboards and do the same thing with any figure that you want to put on the geoboard. If the students have transparent geoboards they can: make a figure, place another board exactly on top and copy the figure. They can then see what happens when they translate it and/or rotate it. They can also show reflections on the geoboard but not so easily. (The Mira is much better for reflections.) Tracing paper is useful for translations (see geoboard above). When you use it for rotations a pin is useful as the centre of rotation. You can also use it for reflections by folding. (I use waxed paper on the overhead when the students are using tracing paper.)

Instructional Activities and Lesson Plans Learning with understanding is essential to enable students to solve the new kinds of problems they will inevitably face in the future. -NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics "Teaching mathematics is a complex endeavor, and there are no easy recipes." In designing activities and lesson plans, teachers must work carefully to develop students' understanding of mathematics concepts. Teachers should also strive to represent those concepts in real-life problem-solving situations and authentic settings to which children can relate. In this section is a complete alphabetical listing of the instructional activities and lesson plans referred to in the Content Strands sections of IMAGES. Teachers should always remember to reinforce the connection between the activity or lesson plan and the concept of geometry and measurement it models.
The use of these activities and lessons requires flexibility; the appropriate grade level of each is ultimately the teacher's decision, as in some instances older students would benefit from activities suggested for a younger level, and vice versa. Frequently, activities and lessons will overlap two or more content strands. Lessons within this document address the five process standards presented in the NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics : problem solving, reasoning, representation, connections, and communication.

I chose a measurement lesson plan called Integrating Math into a Spring Thematic Unit . This lesson plan not only includes measurement, it provides practice using addition, subtraction, > is more important to the concept of measurement than the addition is. I think these parts were just added to take up more time. Although, maybe I'm wrong.
Jason Brennan jabrenna@vt.edu
Jeff Meehan jmeehan@vt.edu
I chose a lesson plan which deals with measurement of volume . I thought it was pretty interesting, and it sounds like it could be fun. The lesson plan actually doesn't have much of a procedure to follow, it is left up to the children to decide what to do. The teacher merely divides the children into groups, gives them the materials (scissors and tape and paper), and tells them to make a square centimeter, inch and meter and then a cubic centimeter, inch and meter. The lack of a exact procedure allows for problem solving and cooperation between the children. When the students are done building the boxes, they elect one member of the group to explain what they had done. I liked this lesson plan because it involves teamwork and allows room for creativity. It is actually quite a simple lesson plan, but is adequate nonetheless.

Snowflake Geometry
Art - Grades (elementary school)
Teachers: This activity will help students understand that no two snowflakes are alike by having your class make paper snowflakes. Once this assignment is completed, they will see how duplication is not possible in paper snowflakes nor with snowflakes made of ice crystals. Objective: Students will understand that no two snowflakes are alike after they simulate making snowflakes from paper squares. Materials:
  • 8 x 8 white paper squares scissors pencil
Background:
  • Snowflakes develop their hexagonal shape, six sides and arms, from the way water molecules arrange themselves when they freeze. It takes many water molecules to form the necessary snow crystals needed to make a snowflake. (From a 100,000,000,000 to 10,000,000,000,000,000,000.) With this range, the statistics are even higher for any two snowflakes to have their molecules freeze in the exact same pattern.
  • Activity:
  • This activity works better if students create their snowflakes from circles, instead of squares, because it will give the snowflake the necessary six sides and arms. Have the students fold their square in half and cut out a half circle, leaving the fold intact. The student then needs to place the fold of the circle toward themselves. Take the right corner of the half circle and fold it to the left 2/3 of the way over.

Construction of an Islamic Pattern, part A. By following steps 1 - 6, the student will have the experience of constructing the star-hexagon pattern, a popular Islamic all-over pattern. Construction of an Islamic Pattern, part B. Steps 7 - 9 show how a triangle grid becomes a hexagonal grid.
