Organization
Time and Place: Monday and Wednesay, 11:301:00, DC 3313, starting Monday September 13.
Classes will consist of lectures, student presentions of papers, and problem sessions. Credit:
  • 3 assignments (30%)
  • a class presentation of a journal or conference paper (30%). I will suggest papers, or you may pick one yourself and check it with me.
  • a written project (40%). Pick some topic that interests you and is relevant to the course; explore some aspect of it; read a few papers; and survey them in at most 6 pages. I will suggest possible topics.
Course Outline
This will be a research level course in computational geometry, concentrating on algorithms that deal with polyhedra in three dimensions. Polyhedra have fascinated mathematicians for centuries, and this course will at least touch on some of this large body of work, revisiting classical results from a more algorithmic point of view. These days, polyhedra and polygonal meshes are ubiquitous in computer graphics, computer aided design, medical imaging, and scientific computing; applicability to these areas will guide the selection of topics for this course, although it is not an applications course. The course will emphasize design, correctness and analysis of algorithms.

Computational Geometry This page is still under construction I ntroduction Arithmetic was the first mathematics developed in each of the ancient civilizations we are familiar with. Geometry was the second. This is testimony to the power of geometry for representing fundamental properties of the physical world in which we live. Indeed, the ancient Greeks designed their arithmetic around Geometry and geometric constructions. Thus, geometry can trace its roots back a very long way. But even in more recent times geometry has played an important role in the development of computing. The first digital computer, ENIAC, was designed to solve what is essentially a geometric problem-the calculation of artillery trajectories. Moreover, one of the first general-purpose computer algorithms was based upon the solution to a geometric problem known as linear programming . The simplex algorithm designed in the 1940's for solving this problem is still used extensively today and is applied to a host of different combinatorial optimization problems. Today, computers are being used more and more to solve large-scale geometric problems. Over the past two decades, a set of tools and techniques has been developed that takes advantage of the structure provided by geometry. This discipline is known as

Origami Mathematics
These pages are an attempt to begin collecting information on the mathematics of paper folding. Anyone who has practiced origami has probably, at one time or another, unfolded an origami model and marveled at the intricate crease pattern which forms the "blueprint" of the fold. Clearly there are some rules at play in these collection of creases. Clearly there is an origami geometry at work when paper is folded. Unfortunately, much of the above-mentioned work is new, and at the time of this writing there are few good references for this type of information. These pages will try to help solve this problem by providing an extensive bibliography for origami-math, list upcoming lectures and events, and offer instructions and tutorials for select topics. However, this is an on-going project! These pages are still in their infancy, and any comments or suggestions (or offers to help!) would be greatly appreciated! In March of 2001 the 3rd International Meeting of Origami Science and Technology (3OSME) was held. See the above link for the program listing, pictures, and information on the proceedings book

with the AMS
Prerequisites
The AMS Author Packages were designed to be used with an existing TeX system. You must have the following installed:
Packages
The author package for each publication contains:
  • a README file an Instructions manual (available separately as a PDF file for AMS-LaTeX or AMS-TeX guidelines for creating graphics (available separately as a PDF file style files topmatter templates samples supplementary instructions
The following list shows the available packages. This list will be updated as more packages become available. NOTE: If you are installing both AMS-LaTeX and AMS-TeX files, install them in separate directories. They may contain identical filenames which will overwrite one another if they are in the same directory.
Generic packages
Use a "generic" (nonspecific) package only if no publication-specific package exists. Check the list by publication first to determine whether such a package is available.

Overview History Algorithms ... History Books Journals Proceedings
These are the major journals that publish papers about geometry algorithms. Clicking on a journal's name will take you to its web site. Most journal sites will provide an archive of past Table of Contents along with abstracts. Some provide online papers (but you usually have to subscribe).
Note: marks journals that regularly have articles about geometry algorithms. Other journals may only occasionally have such articles. Journals are listed alphabetically. ACM Transactions on Graphics (TOG) (since 1982)
Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) For the ACM TOG the term "computer graphics" is interpreted broadly; it includes, but is not limited to, work on ... computer-aided design, color, computational geometry, the design and analysis of graphics algorithms, geometric modeling, ... novel applications, and rendering. Advances in Geometry (since 2001)
Walter de Gruyter Advances in Geometry is a new journal for publications in the broad area of geometry. Specific areas of interest include finite geometry, combinatorial geometry, discrete geometry, differential geometry, algebraic and topological geometry, convex sets and polytopes, tilings and coverings, etc.
