HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTE OF GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES OF THE JAGIELLONIAN UNIVERSITY Witold Zuchiewicz
Introduction: important dates
In 1921, W. Szajnocha initiated and organized the Geological Society of Poland, becoming its first president. The headquarters of the Society were housed at the Geological Cabinet. In 1923, after the death of J. Grzybowski, the Palaeontological Lab was supervised by Jan Nowak [1880-1940] until 1928, then by Wilhelm Friedberg (1928-1935), and Franciszek Bieda (1935-1939). In 1927, Jagiellonian University introduced M. Sc. degrees in geology and palaeontology. In 1928-1939, the Geological Cabinet was headed by Wiktor Ku¼niar [1879-1935], and in 1929-1939 by Jan Nowak. In September 1962, the Chairs of Geology, Mineralogy and Petrography, as well as the Department of Palaeontology were transferred to a new building, specially designed for the needs of geological and mineralogical sciences of the Jagiellonian University (Collegium Geologicum, 2A Oleandry Street).
Main lines of research before 1972 Research interests of the first Polish field geologist, Ludwik Zejszner, were focused on the Kraków region, the Outer and Inner Carpathians, as well as the area comprised between the Holy Cross Mts. and Vistula River. During the period of 1886-1928, the scope of research was considerably broadened, both in the field of palaeontology (W. Szajnocha, J. Grzybowski), mineralogy and crystallography (Feliks and Stefan Kreutz), regional and economic geology, as well as geological mapping and tectonics (W. Szajnocha, J. Nowak).

Buffalo Bill Historical Center - Cody, Wyoming
As Tom Sansonetti “Culture of Water” symposium October 13-15 at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center (BBHC). “We’re delighted the symposium is bringing 20 renowned water experts from the fields of law, commerce, history, and environmental studies to our community. The discussion is certain to be lively and informative,” said organizer, Dr. Robert B. Pickering , Deputy Director for Collections and Education at the BBHC. “Their perspectives from history, economics, public policy, and American Indian rights will give participants a number of points of view on water issues. As an added benefit, those in the legal field who attend can receive those all important Continuing Legal Education (CLE) units.” Since hardly a week goes by without a news story related to water issues, the BBHC fall symposium couldn’t be more timely. In addition to Sansonetti, other guest speakers are The Honorable Bill Bradley , former Senator from New Jersey and Dr. Charles Wilkinson
