A SHORT HISTORY OF THE GEOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION OF CANADA
On February 14th, 1947, a group of geologists met at the Engineers' Club in Toronto with the objective of creating the Geological Institute of Canada, an association of geologists which would, among other things, promote, discuss and disseminate geological knowledge. A second meeting on March 11th, 1947, resulted in a preliminary Constitution and Bylaws as well as the election of the first Councillors, a change of name to the Geological Association of Canada and 140 charter members. From the outset, the Association was designed to fill a role similar to that of the Geological Society of America, bridging a gap between the perceived industrial mineral orientation of the Geological Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the purely scientific objectives of Section IV of the Royal Society of Canada.
    The Objects of the Association include: a) to promote the science of geology and closely related fields of study and to promote the knowledge of the members in connection therewith; b) to hold conferences, meetings and exhibitions for the discussion of geological problems and the exchange of views in matters related to geology;

Richard William Hey
Richard William Hey was a member of staff in the University Department of Geology from 1951 until his retirement in 1982. Originally appointed as a University Demonstrator in 1951, he become a University Lecturer in the Department of Geology in 1956.
He began his career after the Second World War, by studying sites scattered with Palaeolithic stone artefacts, in association with Dr Charles McBurney, the Cambridge Palaeolithic Archaeologist. W.B.R. (Bill) King, who was the head of the Cambridge Geology Department ('the Sedgwick'), suggested that Richard register for a Ph.D on the Cyrenaican Quaternary research and this he did in 1947. Richard was awarded his doctorate for the thesis: The Pleistocene geology and late Tertiary geomorphology of Cyrenaica on the 15 May 1951.
The detailed investigations of McBurney's archaeological sites and the sequences in which they occurred, including the broader context of the shorelines and marine deposits, alluvial, dune, tufa and slope deposits along the coastal plain, was published in the monograph Prehistory and Pleistocene Geology in Cyrenaican Libya
Although Richard had no formal Quaternary training, throughout his period in Cambridge, the study of the Quaternary was developing as an important theme outside the Department of Geology; the University becoming the most important centre in the country for this work. Under the leadership of

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GeoScienceWorld appoints Executive Director, Selects HighWire Press to Build its New Portal
12 July, 2004. Alexandria, VA – GeoScienceWorld (GSW), a cooperative of top-ranked geoscience societies, announced the appointment of Donald F. “Don” Hemenway as Executive Director of the not-for-profit organization, and also announced the selection of Stanford University’s HighWire Press to build its new online portal. Mr. Hemenway, formerly Electronic Media Manager at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, will take over the lead on this important initiative in August. Don brings to GSW more than 22 years of management experience in online and print publishing. "We were pleased to be able to recruit an Executive Director with a strong background in electronic publishing and an academic background in geology," said Edmund Nickless, Executive Secretary of the Geological Society of London, a GSW Board member. "We are confident that under his leadership, GeoScienceWorld will meet the goals established by the founding societies." Slated to be the most comprehensive online resource for journals in the earth sciences, the GeoScienceWorld portal is being developed and hosted by Stanford University’s preeminent electronic journals service, HighWire Press. The initial GeoScienceWorld collection will incorporate titles from 22 leading societies and institutes from six countries, including the seven founding organizations: American Association of Petroleum Geologists, American Geological Institute, Geological Society of America, Geological Society of London, Mineralogical Society of America, Society for Sedimentary Geology, and Society of Exploration Geophysicists. The full journal list is available at: http://www.geoscienceworld.org

AWARDS
At each symposia, the PETROLEUM HISTORY INSTITUTE recognizes life-time achievement in the oil and gas industry. The Colonel Edwin L. Drake Oilman Award is the highest award given by PHI and is directed to those persons who during there worthy careers have materially contributed to the process of finding, producing, transporting, and refining crude oil and natural gas. These recipients have enriched the oil and gas industry by contributing to its store of knowledge, technology, and history. The PHI also make special awards as appropriate, such as in 2003, please see below. Robert Eberly. Starting with natural gas production in Pennsylvania in the early 1940s and branching into oil and gas in Ohio, Maryland, and Oklahoma, Robert Eberly continued in the direction set by his father, Orville Eberly. With partners Snee and Meade, these ventures proved to be very successful. Mr. Eberly has shared his good fortune and knowledge of the gas industry via the Eberly foundation and the Eberly Family Charitable Trust. These entities have contributed greatly to furthering education and the profession. Charles Weiner a founding partner of Texas Crude Oil Company in 1941, is presently Chairman Emeritus of the Board. Texas Crude has participated in thousands of wells over the years and has made ove 180 significant discoveries in eight states (particularly Texas) and abroad. Mr. Weiner continues to be active in oil and gas exploration and development. Mr. Weiner is a Certified Petroleum Geologist and Trustee Associate with the American Association of Petroelum Geologists. He is a member of the American Petroleum Institute.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Teachers and students in Southern California will soon have a greater understanding of the world around them by studying the role of Earth sciences in our lives. The American Geological Institute (AGI), in partnership with ChevronTexaco Corporation and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), recently announced a joint initiative to provide training to high-school teachers to enhance their knowledge of Earth science concepts and principles so they can better prepare students to meet the new state Earth science testing standards. "This extraordinary collaboration clearly demonstrates the importance of fostering a strong foundation in Earth science literacy, which is essential for ensuring the welfare and security of society, the quality of our environment, and the future of our planet," said AGI Director of Education, Michael J. Smith.

What is the Fossil Record File?
One of the defining qualities of GSNZ that sets it apart from all other geological societies is its joint ownership (with the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences, GNS) of a national research database known as the New Zealand Fossil Record File (FRF). This is a register of fossil localities that exists both electronically (as FRED: fossil record electronic database), and as a paper file. It is physically administered by six FRF Curators who are based in universities or GNS offices in the major centres (Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland). Day to day management and operation of FRED is carried out by GNS at its Lower Hutt office.
