The American Geological Institute's Distinguished Service Award to be presented to Edward C. Roy Jr.
ALEXANDRIA, VA The American Geological Institute (AGI) announces that Edward C. Roy Jr. will receive the William B. Heroy Jr. Award for Distinguished Service on Tuesday, November 4, at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America (GSA), an affiliated member society. The Reception and Awards Ceremony takes place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Metropolitan Ballroom of the Sheraton Seattle Hotel and Towers in Seattle, Washington. The Heroy Award is presented annually to a geoscientist in recognition of outstanding service to the Institute and to the geoscience profession. "Ed has made, and continues to make, innumerable contributions to the Institute and our programs, and his guidance throughout the years has been invaluable," says Marcus E. Milling, AGI Executive Director. "Ed is also an ardent advocate for Earth science education who has devoted significant time to help students, academic administrators, and political leaders understand the importance of the geosciences in our daily lives here at home and around the world." Roy is currently the Gertrude and Walter Pyron Distinguished Professor of Geology at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where he has held various academic and administrative positions during his tenure of more than 35 years, including Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dean of the Division of Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering; and Chair of the Department of Geology. In 2002, Roy was appointed by the Commissioner of the Texas Education Agency to chair the Texas Earth Science Task Force which is assessing Earth science as a core high-school science course. Roy began his career as a micropaleontolgist for Shell Oil Company. He earned a B.S. degree in geology, and his Ph.D. in geology from The Ohio State University.

Box 25287, Denver, CO 80225-0287 Providing Geosciences outreach to the public is more important today than ever before. Every person should have the opportunity to better appreciate the majesty of our planet’s geology. This can best be done if the public has a basic understanding of the processes that created this beauty. As part of a public outreach effort, the American Geological Institute is giving a high priority to using the national parks, icons of our geologic heritage, as public classrooms. The National Parks Service, which has 23,000 employees, has only 80 geologists (only 40 actually working in the parks) and yet there are 166 parks with significant geologic phenomena. There are a great many parks which were set aside specifically because of the need to preserve their geologic beauty. To better educate the public, using our National Park system as a vehicle, we are initiating or are cooperating with efforts to: encourage colleges and universities to teach courses on the geology of national parks and to create a system to share pertinent information with them; review textbooks for “Geology of the National Parks;” create and nurture a program that encourages local geological societies to “Adopt a Park;” develope a program to coordinate a set of fact-based, park-specific geology booklets; and work with Dr. Paul Weimer (University of Colorado) to create animated interactive videos that tell the geologic story of some of the major national parks.

Water and Environmental Section
The mission of the water and environmental section of the Louisiana Geological Survey (LGS) is to gain a better understanding of the hydrologic systems of Louisiana, particularly through increased knowledge of the properties of the state's aquifers. Besides research into Louisiana aquifers-especially how they interact with each other and with the state's rivers, lakes, and wetlands-research is also performed into water quality and how natural and man made pollutants are distributed and move within the aquifers, as well as interactions with surface water bodies. The results of this research into the state's hydrologic systems allows the LGS to provide effective technical assistance/support to various stakeholders of Louisiana water resources, thus aiding in Louisiana's management of this valuable resource.

Carlson worked Physics Lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, as a Physics Instructor at Ball State University, as Associate Lecturer and Lecturer at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, as Hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, and Research Hydrogeologist at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He joined the LGS in 2002. Carlson's areas of expertise include physical hydrogeology, groundwater modeling, groundwater surface water interactions, application of geophysical techniques to hydrogeologic studies, chemical hydrogeology and hydrology.

Basin Research Energy Section
The Basin Research Energy Section is the oil, gas, and coal research section of the LGS, and it performs research into the nature and occurrence of oil, gas, and coal both in Louisiana and around the world. The BRES disseminates its research and technical information widely, especially to the independent oil and gas producers of Louisiana, thereby enabling more economically efficient exploration and production operations. The Basin Research Energy Section was formerly the LSU Basin Research Institute, which was established in 1984 and which was merged into the Louisiana Geological Survey in 2000.

Roger worked as an Exploration Geologist for British Petroleum, a Research Associate for the Bureau of Economic Geology at The University of Texas at Austin, a Development Geologist at Saudi Aramco, and a Senior Research Specialist at ExxonMobil Upstream Research Lab. Roger joined the LGS in late 2004. His areas of expertise include carbonate geology, sequence stratigraphy, reservoir characterization, regional stratigraphic studies, and geochemical and isotopic techniques to evaluate sediment diagenesis and water-rock interaction.

Mississippi Coal Seam Natural Gas Project
Introduction
Targets and Objectives

Coal in the Wilcox Group was deposited over a broad coastal plain that extended across Mississippi, into southwest Alabama, and west into Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas (Figure 1) (Rainwater, 1960, 1964; Galloway, 1968, 2000; Cleaves,1980; O'Neil, 1988). Mississippi's two principal coal-bearing intervals occur in the upper and lower Wilcox. The lower Wilcox ranks highest for CSG potential as that subsurface coal deposits are confined to a 100-200 foot interval with average thickness estimated between 10-40 feet. Coal seams in the upper Wilcox are stacked vertically over approximately 1500 feet of section, making the upper Wilcox a secondary CSG objective. Targets are present in both north and south Mississippi (Figure 1). Southern targets are located in the Mississippi Salt Basin along the Pickens-Pollard Fault Zone, salt dome(s), and a Wilcox depositional hingeline in Mississippi that has similar characteristics to the north Louisiana Wilcox gas trend. Preliminary mapping in north Mississippi has identified a structure that may have CSG potential based on well and mud logs that report coal seam gas shows present between 1000-1500 feet. Drilling depths for the four CSG targets vary between 1000-5500 feet below surface. Four test holes, supported by coring, are needed to examine the variations in coal-bearings intervals and trapping mechanisms. The Consortium work plan suggested by the IOGCC proposes that industry partners pay normal drilling and logging costs. Federal funding is to be sought to cover coring costs and the USGS will conduct desorption analyses on cores. Several exploration companies have been identified as having plans to test CSG prospects in the state. MMRI has assigned staff geologists to the project for research and field support. A chemical engineer at the University of Mississippi has been tapped to run adsorption and other geochemical analyses. Additional funding will be sought from industry and state sources to increase research funding for MMRI CSG activities.
