As one of the world's largest nickel mining centres and home of Inco Ltd., Falconbridge Ltd., Laurentian University, and the Ontario Geological Survey/Ontario Geoscience Laboratories (located on the LU campus), Sudbury provides an ideal environment for research on magmatic sulphide deposits. Our students work and interact with a large group of scientists studying the geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, and petrology of magmatic and hydrothermal ore deposits, including MERC/Department of Earth Sciences faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students; mining company geologists; OGS staff geologists; and OGL staff scientists. Researchers have access to excellent computing and analytical facilities, including state-of-the-art equipment for electron probe microanalysis, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and thermal ionization mass spectrometry. Most research opportunities are fully-funded and include living stipends, field expenses, analytical expenses, and meeting expenses. All projects will provide the opportunity to do cutting-edge research on world-class ore deposits using state-of-the-art analytical equipment; many will include opportunities for summer employment with mining companies.

    About MDRU
The Mineral Deposit Research Unit (MDRU) is a collaborative venture between the mining industry and The University of British Columbia (UBC). The unit, which was established in 1989 with support and financial assistance from the mining industry and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), is an important part of the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences and an internationally recognized research group devoted to solving mineral exploration-related problems. It is part of an integrated geologic and geophysical research program at UBC devoted to training students for employment in the industry and to solving research questions of interest to the community. “MDRU plays a vital role in advancing research within the Faculty of Science at UBC. It also serves to strengthen UBC’s ties with industry by providing valuable data and research that benefits both the university community and the exploration and mining industry. MDRU continues to play an integral role in the Faculty’s research activities”
John W. Hepburn, Dean of Science, UBC

GEOLOGY RESEARCH GROUP CSM Research Group Members Current Group Activities
The Geology Research Group is involved in projects ranging from pure 'academic' geology, through to applied research directly relevant to the earth resources industries. In particular the group has expertise in:
  • the geological formation and evaluation of mineral resources (including industrial minerals, precious metals, energy minerals and diamonds) applied mineralogy environmental geology and geochemistry applied sedimentology structural and regional geology
These activities are pursued worldwide, but the majority of the group are also engaged in one or more research projects of direct relevance to South West England. Several of the research areas overlap with the interests of the two other research groups at CSM. Individual staff research interests in this group include: Professor Peter Scott
Geology, mineralogy and genesis of mineral deposits, especially industrial rocks and minerals, clay mineralogy, mineralisation in ultrabasic rocks, geology of the Caribbean, industrial minerals in developing countries. Dr Jens Andersen
Mafic-ultramafic layered intrusions, platinum-group mineralisation.

Some of our research is outlined below. On-going research projects: Structure and tectonics of southern Mongolia. Dr. Lamb received a Petroleum Research Fund new faculty grant to support her research in southern Mongolia. As part of this project, three St. Thomas geology majors will be travelling with Dr. Lamb to southern Mongolia for most of June, 2002 to perform field work. The remainder of the summer will be spent processing and analyzing samples from the field season. The three student participants are: Justin Tweet: geochronology of igneous rocks of the Shin Jinst region. Tiffani Navratil: structural geology and tectonics of the Shin Jinst region. Rebeka Poier: structural geology of the Shin Jinst region.
