The natural environment sector aims to better understand the physical and natural environment of the Wadi el-Far'a. This study of the natural environment includes the sub-disciplines of geology, physical geography, hydrogeology, and biology. Due to an extremely limited access to the study area, the majority of information is based on previously published reports and tests done in the Wadi el-Far'a, and the maps produced were based on synthesizing available map data.
Geographically, the Wadi el-Far'a study area is located in the northern region of the West Bank. It is notable that the topography of the region changes from -300m to 700m above sea level.
Because only one climate station is located within the Wadi el-Far'a study boundary, the climate and meteorological information relied on the use of other stations with a similar climate to get a complete picture. The climate is dominantly a Mediterranean semi-arid, with mild rainy winters and moderately dry, hot summers. The highly variable rainfall and temperature are influenced by both elevation and the circulation of the air-stream.
The Wadi el-Far'a study area is almost completely contained within the Eastern Mountain Aquifer, one of the three main West Bank aquifers. The regional direction of ground water flow is toward the Jordan River. Because springs provide the base flow component of the system, the Wadi el-Far'a stream does not dry up in the summer. Gaining a firm understanding of the hydrogeology is complicated by the regular interaction between groundwater in the fractured limestone aquifer and by the poorly defined aquifer boundaries. The large variations in transmissivity have, to date, been presumed to be a result of a more interconnected network of fractures as well as more solution activity in the lower part of the study area near the Jordan River discharge location.

Paper No. 133-8 Presentation Time: 10:00 AM-10:15 AM HAZARD CITY: PROBLEM-SOLVING ASSIGNMENTS IN APPLIED GEOLOGY WITH COMPUTER ASSESSMENT KING, Hobart M. , Geography and Geology, Mansfield Univ, 205-C Belknap Hall, Mansfield, PA 16933, hking@mnsfld.edu. Hazard City is a collection of eight problem-solving assignments in applied geology on CD-ROM. In each assignment, students will explore the imaginary community of Hazard City, collect relevant data, and apply that data to solve practical problems. Hazard City topics include: earthquakes, volcanoes, flooding, water supply, ground water contamination, mass wasting, waste disposal and mineral resources. Each Hazard City assignment requires between one and three hours of student work, however, the assessments are in the form of multiple choice questions. This allows them to be rapidly graded by hand or automatically graded using a course management system such as Blackboard, WebCT or CourseCompass. With a course management system, the scores can be automatically entered into an online grade book. These time-saving features allow professors of high enrollment courses to give students several significant assignments each semester with very little time spent on tasks such as distributing materials, marking papers and calculating grades. This is a way to let technology work for you. The Hazard City assignments can be used as meaningful homework in a face-to-face course or they can serve as the core of a distance learning course. Because the assignments are challenging they can generate significant student interaction. This can be done in class as part of a face-to-face course or out of class in an online discussion forum. The topics enable the assignments fit well into courses in Environmental Geology, Physical Geology, Physical Geography or Earth Science.

    Message from the Chair
The academic year recently ended has been one of considerable progress and some frustration, fortunately mostly the former. The year began with the announcement by President Morris of his resignation effective at the end of the year. The search for a new president occupied most of the year, and the effect on the geology department was to put some initiatives on hold, in particular the addition of a fourth faculty line to the department. I am still hopeful that the college will recognise the wisdom of further strengthening a program which is making tremendous strides. The number of geology majors continues to increase, along with demand for geology courses. One freshman is entering this fall as a geology major, the first in more than two decades. Although we had no students graduating last June, next spring we expect to grant five bachelor's degrees in geology. I hope we will continue to average a similar number of graduates in the coming years. John Damanti , who was a visiting lecturer in the department, will be starting as an assistant professor at Miami University of Ohio in the fall. We are all delighted with his success in obtaining a permanent position, and wish him continued success. While he was with us he taught environmental geology, physical geology, and geomorphology. Next year we will have another visiting lecturer supported by the PEW Foundation.
