Text: Press and Siever: Understanding Earth, Fourth Edition (2003) ISBN 0-7167-9617-1
In general I use the textbook as background information and reading. I do not assign specific readings or assignments from the text, but expect the students to read the relevant chapter in the text before the lecture.
I have a course lecture note website for which this page is the course syllabus and index.
The Spring, 2005 GEOL 1010, Sec 002 will meet at 1 PM MWF in the Benson Earth Sciences Building Rm 180.
I have been working on the notes so much is new. Also the text for Spring, 2005, is a new edition: Press, Siever, Grotzinger, and Jordan Understanding Earth , Fourth Edition (2003).
The web material consists of NetNotes in html format and the lecture Power Point slides in pdf format. Both are based on the organization used in the text, but are my own work, and most of the images were taken by me. The pdf links are to the Power Point presentations. I will leave up links to last year's and update them as we proceed throughthe semester.

Degrees
General Requirements
  • As a prerequisite to student teaching, students seeking a secondary school teaching certificate must complete in residence at least six semester hours of upper-division coursework in each of two areas of specialization, or at least nine semester hours of upper-division coursework in a composite specialization. Student teaching must also be completed in residence. Those seeking elementary school certification must complete in residence at least twelve semester hours in the professional development sequence, including student teaching. Residence credit includes only courses taken at the University; it does not include credit by examination or courses taken by extension or correspondence.
  • Courses numbered in two departments, one of which is in the College of Education, may not be used to satisfy noneducation elective requirements for degree purposes.
  • Each degree program is arranged in the sequence best calculated to ensure orderly progress of the student's college work. Any student who registers for twelve semester hours or more in a long-session semester must include at least nine semester hours of coursework listed as basic education requirements for the degree being sought until each of these requirements has been fulfilled. At the dean's discretion, adjustments may be made when exceptional circumstances exist, or when a student has gained credit through examination, or when the student is enrolling for fewer than twelve semester hours of credit in a long-session semester.

What was this area like when the different layers of sediment were being deposited? How did the environment change as time progressed and different sediments were deposited? Why are the rocks deformed and when? Are there geologic resources here? Are there geologic hazards? Why does the canyon take the shape it does, and how long did it take to form? These are the types of questions that can be addressed in geology, and which this course can teach you to answer. Physical Geology (GEOL 1170) Lecture, H. D. Maher Jr., Univ. of NE Radiometric dating - internal clocks in rocks. Geochronology: the science of dating geologic materials. Basics of radioactive decay and isotopic dating. Radioactive decay occurs at an exponential rate, meaning that it can be described in terms of a half life. After one half live, half of the original radioactive isotope material in the system under consideration decays. Another half life and half of the remaining material decays, and so on. This is for unforced decay. Forced decay is when the isotopic material is packed densely enough that a decay in one unstable atom sends out a particle that hits another atom and causes it to decay. If it is packed too densely there is a run away reaction and one of those unpopular mushroom clouds or meltdowns. Normal concentrations of radioactive material on earth are well below the levels where forced decay occurs so we can use the relatively simple mathematics of exponential decay to describe the process. the rate of decay is constant for earthly P-T conditions. A major assumption is that the rock or mineral being dated has been a closed system so that no parent isotope or daughter product has escaped or been added. This assumption can be tested for.
