Geography of Belize
World Facts Index Belize Map of Belize Belize is located on the Caribbean coast of northern Central America. It shares a border on the north with the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, on the west with the Guatemalan department of Petén, and on the south with the Guatemalan department of Izabal. To the east in the Caribbean Sea, the second-longest barrier reef in the world flanks much of the 386 kilometers of predominantly marshy coastline. Small cay islands totaling about 690 square kilometers, dot the reef. The area of the country totals 22,960 square kilometers, an area slightly larger than El Salvador or Massachusetts. The abundance of lagoons along the coasts and in the northern interior reduces the actual land area to 21,400 square kilometers. Belize is shaped like a rectangle that extends about 280 kilometers north-south and about 100 kilometers east-west, with a total land boundary length of 516 kilometers. The undulating courses of two rivers, the Hondo and the Sarstoon, define much of the course of the country's northern and southern boundaries. The western border follows no natural features and runs north-south through lowland forest and highland plateau. Geology Belizean geology consists largely of varieties of limestone, with the notable exception of the Maya Mountains, a large intrusive block of granite and other Paleozoic sediments running northeast to southwest across the south-central part of the country. Several major faults rive these highlands, but much of Belize lies outside the tectonically active zone that underlies most of Central America. During the Cretaceous period, what is now the western part of the Maya Mountains stood above sea level, creating the oldest land surface in Central America, the Mountain Pine Ridge plateau.

Nonetheless, in its own way, the Valley forms a fascinating landscape. The geology can be subtle in appearance, yet startling in its impact. It profoundly affects residents of this region in many ways. We invite you to learn more about the geology of the Fargo region through the resources provided on this and on our related pages.

B. DESCRIPTION
T
I n response to the need for scientific knowledge of the potential impacts of the long-range transportation of air pollutants on freshwater ecosystems in Atlantic Canada, the Government of Canada initiated the Kejimkujik Calibrated Catchment Study Program, an interdisciplinary multi-agency study in 1980.
T he lake is shallow and has a relatively high flushing rate (4.5 times yr-1), precipitation is 1,460 mm yr-1 and the runoff is 910 mm yr-1. The water is extremely dilute (sum of constituents = 13 mg l-1), and due to its relative closeness to the ocean, it is dominated by Na and Cl ions. Calcium and magnesium concentrations are extremely low (0.7 and 0.5 mg l-1, respectively); thus under the existing ca. 20 kg ha-1 yr-1 wet sulphate deposition, combined with the existing natural acidity, the lake responds with chronically depressed pH (4.8 annual mean). Studies in the lake and its tributaries showed that the additional sulphate deposition of anthropogenic origin gives additional acidity to the water, particularly during the winter and early spring, which explains the disappearance of Atlantic salmon downstream from the lake (Q).

Welcome to Marine Sciences at UNC-Chapel Hill
Document Actions Welcome to the Marine Sciences Program of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Our Program shares the University's strong commitment to teaching, research and public service. We strive to quantitatively describe, understand and predict the processes that regulate marine systems and connect these to the other components of the Earth's System, to assess the significance of change in marine systems and its consequences for humans and other organisms. The Marine Sciences Program is comprised of two separate administrative units, the Department of Marine Sciences (MASC) in Chapel Hill and the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) in Morehead City.

These notes have an intrinsic worth not unrelated to the effort it has taken you to access them. They have been provided to help the student review the material and organize your thoughts. They are intended to be correct, but are not the Final Word of the Geologic Gods. Errors reported to the author will be appreciated; blind quotation used in lieu of thought will be treated less kindly. Geology is a visual science and, as such, is much documented by pictures and graphics. These lecture notes are LARGE, ranging from 300K to close to 4M in size. Using a 56K modem it will take as little as 1 minutes or as much as 15 minutes to download a single file. Consumption of caffeinated beverages during this time is not recommended. This symbol indicates a condensed version, several slides to a page, suitable for note taking. Some will wish to save paper; some will wish to see the details; your choice doesn't affect download time.
