Waves Characteristics (Ocean / Lakes) Waves are generated on the surface of water (ocean/lakes) by wind. The wind transfers energy to the water, through friction between the air molecules and the water molecules. Waves of water do not move horizontally, they only move up and down (a wave does not represent a flow of water). Use this wave interactive to learn more on waves. For the last seven years I have been teaching introductory Geology, Physical Science, and Energy classes at College of the Redwoods (CR) as a Associate Faculty in the Math and Science Departments, as well as Physical Geology and Earthquake Country at HSU. Additionally, Dave Bazard* and I offer every semester (at CR) a popular field geology course in which we go to various locations in the Pacific Northwest. Two of these field trips are provided below as links. * A Geology alumnus who is now Full time instructor at College of the Redwoods Research Interests My research interests for the past 30 years have been North Coast Seismicity and the interaction and geometry of the plates that make up the Mendocino Triple Junction. Every earthquake that occurs, I immediately look at its focal mechanism, and see if it fits the model we developed while at TERA Corp. So far, so good!

Swedish site on St Helena To fully understand the physical geography of St. Helena, a knowledge of the island's geological structure, lithology and history is essential. This page augments a concise description of these elements with a consideration of St. Helena in the wider context of ocean-floor spreading and plate tectonics. A description of the island's physiography and comments on the economic geology are also included.
Physiography
St. Helena is the deeply eroded summit of a composite volcano rising from the sea floor at a depth of 4,224m. The sub-aerial portion is approximately 122 sq. km. (47 sq. miles) in area - about half the size of the Isle of Wight. The highest point, Diana's Peak , is 823m above sea level. The small size of the visible island belies the true dimensions of this massive volcano; it is a major feature on the earth's surface. The base of the volcanic pile measures some 130km in diameter and the volume of the cone is estimated to be twenty times that of Mt. Etna - the largest European volcano. St. Helena is truly remote and, together with Ascension Island (1,127km distant), comprises the only land in 3 per cent of the earth's surface area.

Specific Guidelines and Criteria for Courses Submitted in
GEOLOGY, PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY, AND EARTH SCIENCE
Specific guidelines and criteria in the natural sciences require that courses in the natural sciences should be broad in scope and content rather than specific to an aspect of a discipline, and may include interdisciplinary science courses. Courses in the natural sciences must include laboratory experiences which emphasize the scientific method. General studies courses in Geology, Physical Geography, and Earth Science must include at least one designated period per week that involves hands-on laboratory or field experiences with emphasis on the scientific method. Courses in this area may include courses in Environmental Science. Topics covered in an introductory course in Geology include rocks and minerals, composition of Earth's interior, plate tectonics, geomorphic processes and the development of the present day landscape, natural resources, origin and evolution of Earth through time, and life on Earth through time as recorded in rocks and fossils. Topics covered in an introductory course in Physical Geography include weather, climate and climate regions, natural vegetation and vegetation regions, natural landscape processes and natural landscape regions, natural resources, soils and soil regions, and water resources.

Subject: geomorphology as a field of study
I have a question for everyone. What do you say to the geologists who claim that there is no longer a need for the study of geomorphology, that it is nothing more than physical geology? Our school is in the process of a semester conversion, and the geomorphology course was a casulty of the process. Geology dropped it, but I was successful in adding it to the geography curriculum. There seems to be no small degree of antipathy toward the subject among the geologists here on campus. So, I wondered how others have handled the question. Thanks, Paul R. Larson Paul R. The ESU Geology Museum has recently been renamed the Johnston Geology Museum in honor of Dr. Paul Johnston for his 38 years of dedication to the Earth Sciences Department and the University as a whole. He was responsible for starting the museum and has been director, curator, collector and jack-of-all-trades for the museum since its inception. The image above shows Paul doing what he did best teach. He did not limit this combination of teaching and field trips to university classes. Paul led trips for such diverse groups as the ESU geology club, the Boy Scouts, Elderhostel, the Kansas Academy of Sciences, and the Kansas Earth Science Teachers Association. The museum is an enduring legacy of his dedication and will continue to help teach everyone who visits it long after his retirement.
