C ARVING T HE R OCKIES he diverse landscape at Rocky Mountain National Park, created over billions of years, displays some of nature's finest handiwork. Natural forces have created geologic features that provide a fascinating glimpse into the mysteries of the park's evolution and clues to the continuing changes that shape the future of this dynamic environment. The park's geologic history contrasts sharply with strata of areas such as the Grand Canyon, where the deeper you go, the farther back in time you travel. At Rocky, some of the most ancient rocks lie atop the highest peaks, lifted thousands of feet by incredibly powerful mountain-building forces within the earth. Much of this ancient rock, however, has been removed from the mountaintops by various natural forces, including the powerful sculpting of massive glaciers . The glaciers were formed by huge snowdrifts, compacted into ice by their own great weight, and contained tons of loose rock temporarily frozen within. They slowly scraped and scoured the bedrock, chiseling mountain summits into peaks. The glaciers continued sliding down the slopes along pathways of steep, V -shaped canyons carved over millions of years by the steady flow of streams. The glaciers wore away the sides of some of these canyons, forming broad

T HE C REATION OF C ANYONLANDS s with all of Utah's national parks, the history of Canyonlands is written primarily in the language of stone. If we were to think of the formation of Canyonlands as a battle between the elements, the infantry would be comprised of limestone, sandstone, and shale, and the cavalry would be water, gravity, and the cold. Their perpetual struggle has resulted in the magnificence of Canyonlands today. We begin our story some 320 million years ago in the Pennsylvanian geologic period. At that time, the Canyonlands area was a basin. Nearby, to the northeast, stood an ancient mountain range, some 30,000 feet high. It has been named the Uncompahgre Uplift. This high mountain range and the basinlike depression contributed to geologic events that helped create the phenomenal landscape we see today. The basin was repeatedly flooded by seawater from an adjacent ocean. Flooding was followed by evaporation and an accumulation of salts. Meanwhile, debris from erosion of the ancient Uncompahgre Uplift added layers of dark shale to the basin area. Over the next 10 million years, the rocky infantry advanced as layers of limestone, sandstone, and more shale were deposited. But by

Become A Big Wheel

Sail into the new millenium on a Lost River Cave boat tour.
The Lost River Cave and Valley have been attractive and useful to humans since the first Native Americans inhabited this place about 11,000 years ago. This unique site, donated to Western Kentucky University in 1985, was created by geological events causing the collapse of a large cave system to form the mile-long Cave Valley in which the Lost River rises to the surface in four places or "windows." The most prominent of these begins at a "blue hole spring" and flows through the Valley for a distance of a few hundred yards before entering what is considered the largest cave opening in the Eastern United States. After flowing into the Cave entrance, the river becomes "lost" and courses for several miles under the city of Bowling Green, Kentucky , emerging at Jennings Creek , a tributary of the Barren River The Lost River Cave and Valley is leased from Western Kentucky University by the Friends of The Lost River , a nonprofit organization formed in 1990 to preserve, restore, and operate the site for educational purposes.

The Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) at North Carolina State University is one of the largest interdisciplinary physical science departments in the nation. MEAS offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in Atmospheric Science/Meteorology, Geology, and Marine Science. SPECIAL LECTURE: Jack Horner: Dinosaurs from the Inside Out
Jordan Hall, room 1132, at 9:30 on Friday, Sept 23.
Jack Horner grew up in Shelby, Montana, where he found his first
dinosaur fossil at age 8. He has been looking for them ever since. He
had his first real break when he was in Montana, prospecting his
favorite hills while on vacation from his job at Princeton. He was handed some small fossil bones, and immediately recognized their significance as embryonic dinosaur remains. This led to the discovery of the first dinosaur nesting ground, in 1979, and only the second example world-wide of dinosaur eggs. From this early information, Jack has continued to make dinosaur paleontology headlines, as he used clues in the fossil record to infer dinosaur herding behavior, parental care, and nesting and reproductive strategies. More recently, Jack has teamed up with colleagues in California and Berkely to begin the field of "dinosaur paleohistology," using microscopic studies of dinosaur bone to infer growth rates, which in turn may be physiological indicators.

Quaternary Studies
An Interdisciplinary Program
Contents
The Program
Rutgers' Graduate Certificate in Quaternary Studies is a multidisciplinary program allowing students to specialize in the study of the last few million years in earth's historythe Late Cenozoic and Quaternary geologic time periods. The program explores the interaction of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere of these years, during which fluctuations in climate triggered the development of continental-scale ice sheets, caused major changes in sea level, and initiated major migrations of animal and plant communities. These changes shaped our contemporary physical environment and stongly influenced evolution. This period saw the dawn of Homo sapiens and the simultaneous extinction of many other groups of organisms. Our knowledge of Late Cenozoic and Quaternary events helps researchers understand current environmental changes and may enable them to anticipate future changes affecting the earth and its inhabitants. The program offers students the opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research in the fields of anthropology, geology, geography, biology, meteorology, and environmental science. Based on a broad, multidisclipinary approach, the program provides the necessary theoretical and practical background for students pursuing careers that may require specialized knowledge of the Late Cenozoic and Quaternary periods.
