Geoarchaeology: Bringing together
the sciences of Geology and Archaeology
by Anne Boyd, National Forest Geologist One hot sunny afternoon in 1986, I was walking along t Indiana side of the Ohio River when suddenly my eye caught the glimmer of a shiny piece of riches of water. I reached into the water to pick it up and was startled to find that it was an arrowhead, a relic from the Woodland Indians that inhabited the area thousands of years ago. After I calmed down a bit I began to look around and I asked myself, "How could this arrowhead have gotten into the Ohio River, and where did it come form?" I looked up and down the narrow beach but all I could see was a steep riverbank, and layers of gravel seams paralleling the river's edge. Certainly no Indians lived on this narrow strip of beach, so the arrowhead must have washed in from above. I climbed the steep eroding bank and on my way up I saw another piece of flint sticking out of the muddy sediments. It was then that I discovered a layer of soil which was distinct from the rest of the soils on the bank. This was where the arrowhead had come from, and this was where more cultural materials certainly were to be found. I looked back down onto the beach and once again saw the gravel seams lining the shore. With an excited leap, I raced down to the gravel seams and inspected them closely. Sure enough, here were bits of flint and discarded artifacts mixed in with sand and river gravels. The bigger artifacts were found with the larger gravels, while thin flakes were mixed in with the sands and smaller sediments. Obviously the powerful Ohio River had done a good job of sorting the artifacts after they were eroded out of the river bank.

Welcome to the WWW Home Page for people interested in the properties, behaviors and origins of fluid and melt inclusions in natural and synthetic materials. In rocks and minerals, fluid inclusions may preserve direct evidence for the presence and composition of ancient fluids that have long since left the sample. Melt inclusions may provide direct samples of the uncrystallized magma including its volatile contents. In the laboratory, fluid inclusions in transparent materials like quartz, provide interesting opportunities to do high pressure and temperature experiments on fluid compositions of interest to chemists, engineers and geologists. An introduction to the Danish Lake District Ecomuseum
The Danish Lake District Ecomuseum offers fantastic nature as well as an interesting cultural history with some important monuments and relics from many important epochs in the history of Denmark. People have been attracted to this region ever since the end of the Glacial period due to the opportunities that the land, woods and fresh water have provided.
The Danish Lake District Ecomuseum aims to strengthen and improve the presentation of the region's culture and nature in order to provide the local people and the many guests to the area with the best possible experiences and possibilities. The area covered by the Danish Lake District Ecomuseum is approximately the area covered by the County of Skanderborg that existed up to 1970. It is an area of 1,719 square kilometres. The County of Skanderborg was also called "The Monastery County" because at its foundation, it was based on the properties of the Monasteries founded in the Middle Ages in the Lake District of Central Jutland.
