Historical Geology
GLY 262
Spring 2005 You will find on this page information, materials, and other resources to accompany the course. As this site will be updated throughout the semester, check back often.
From its very beginning to the present, the Earth has undergone considerable physical, chemical and biologic change. This history can be read using various means from rocks and fossils accessible to us all. To study the history of the Earth is important not only because it helps us understand what processes and events have helped shape our planet's present physical and biologic make-up, but it can also help predict future events that may consequently affect humankind. This course is an introduction to the major events which had a profound impact on the changing physical and biologic landscape throughout Earth's history. The course will stress both theory and facts concerning the history of Earth and life, and more importantly, how we know it. The course is designed to give the student a broad perspective and appreciation of Earth's history and serve as a stepping-stone to more advanced courses in Earth Science.

This is the first page of a large set of Geological Field Guides to the Wessex Coast of southern England, much of it a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Jurassic Coast). It one of the world's largest geological web sites with more than 100 separate web pages. There are thousands of full screen, colour photographs of varied geological and geomorphological features and also associated geological bibliographies. Individual sections have their own indexes. It has emphasis on Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Jurassic, Cretaceous and Palaeogene strata are exposed on this beautiful coastline. There are some additional webpages on other geological topics. A search entry box will be found below. (This site has very heavy use - eg. Requests for the week ending 17 April 2005 - 358,906 successful requests; requesting hosts - 8156. From Southampton University server statistics. For the week ending Sun June 12, 2005 - "Total Number of Successful Requests: 403132 Total Number of Requesting Hosts: 7916" With forthcoming expansion, this site is now targeting for the half million hits a week!). Welcome... T his page is a starting point to access information about all aspects of the Department of Geology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale: our faculty, staff, students, research activities, graduate and undergraduate programs, degree requirements, and application procedures. There are links to specific courses such as our popular summer course in field geology taught annually in Montana and Wyoming, and to pages dedicated to the geology and seismicity of the southern Illinois region.
Parkinson Laboratory A lthough many people think of geology as simply the study of rocks, the scope of the discipline is in fact much broader. In addition to its role as the science dedicated to investigation of thechemical, physical, and evolutionary nature and history of the earth, geology is integral to the resolution of such regional and global problems as environmental pollution, climate change, flood and earthquake hazards, adequate reserves of non-renewable energy sources, groundwater resources and their protection, and the discovery and exploitation of industrially critical ore deposits.
