Welcome to the Department of Geology and to our collections
Appreciation of this geological evolution and the processes responsible for driving it is essential if we are to manage the Earth's environment at the same time as exploiting its resources. The Department holds extensive collections and particular expertise in: Paleontology
    • Palaeozoic invertebrates, especially brachiopods, trilobites, bryozoans Mezozoic molluscs, notably Jurassic ammonites and bivalves Palaeozoic plants, with particular strengths in Silurian-Devonian and upper Carboniferous floras Studies of fossil biodiversity cover all aspects of taxonomy, evolution, biogeography and palaeoecology.
    Petrology
    • Volcanic rocks and processes, especially of Ordovician and Paleogene ages Low grade metamorphism Geochemistry Evolution of Palaeozoic sedimentary facies Precambrian subduction complexes
    Mineralogy
    • Definitive collections of Welsh minerals with accompanying databases for mine sites.
    In addition, the Department has:

Quaternary Sciences Program: The Quaternary Sciences Program (QSP) is a graduate program of interdisciplinary studies including the departments of Anthropology, Biological Sciences, Geography, and Geology, and the Center for Environmental Sciences and Education. This program focuses on the last 1.7 million years of Earth history. Students are required to take an interdisciplinary core curriculum of at least five courses in five subdiscipline areas, and can tailor their remaining courses to fit their desired specialty. The Department of Geology offers a standard geological field school, but we have no such offering for geoarchaeology. For details see the website: http://www.nau.edu/~qsp Department of Geology:

The Hidden World of the Conodonta W. Britt Leatham Department Geological Sciences, California State University San Bernardino Reprinted with permission from The Earth Scientist. The Journal of The National Earth Science Teachers Association. Volume 11, Number 1, Winter 1994, pages 17-20. A Paleo Ring Website
    Introduction
In the fall of 1978, I was given a choice of either of two senior research projects in paleontology: classifying a suite of graptolites from Idaho, or determining whether or not a couple of bags of rock contained conodonts. That simple decision has sent me down one of the most satisfying roads in my paleontological career. Conodonts intrigue me and over 150 specialists who try to decipher their hidden world, often with little more than a very fine brush and a microscope. Although their secrets are understood by few, many if not most geologists recognize their utility as guide fossils for the Paleozoic and Triassic, as well as for predicting petroleum production on possible source rocks. What is it that makes the Conodonta so fascinating and so useful? No Living Representatives One of the reasons dinosaurs are so popular is because they are extinct. Except for birds, there are no living dinosaurs. Conodonts are a lot like living dinosaurs. They are not as big (by orders of magnitude) as dinosaurs, but like the dinos, there are no living models to use for reconstructing their paleobiology.

    Our Mission
The Delaware Geological Survey's mission is, by statute, geologic and hydrologic research and exploration, and dissemination of information through publication and public service.
    Goal Statement
The goal of the Delaware Geological Survey is to provide objective scientific geologic and hydrologic information, advice, and service to our stakeholders. This goal is accomplished by conducting geologic, hydrologic, and geologic hazard investigations and services and by continuing development of our infrastructure through basic data collection and computer-based data management and dissemination programs. The scientific information is used to advise, inform, and educate our stakeholders about the important roles that the earth sciences play in issues regarding water resources, public health, agriculture, economic development, land-use planning, environmental protection, geologic hazards, energy and mineral resources, and recreation.

The ESU Geology Museum has recently been renamed the Johnston Geology Museum in honor of Dr. Paul Johnston for his 38 years of dedication to the Earth Sciences Department and the University as a whole. He was responsible for starting the museum and has been director, curator, collector and jack-of-all-trades for the museum since its inception. The image above shows Paul doing what he did best teach. He did not limit this combination of teaching and field trips to university classes. Paul led trips for such diverse groups as the ESU geology club, the Boy Scouts, Elderhostel, the Kansas Academy of Sciences, and the Kansas Earth Science Teachers Association. The museum is an enduring legacy of his dedication and will continue to help teach everyone who visits it long after his retirement.
