Keweenaw National Historic Park, Michigan Keweenaw National Historical Park with its rich heritage centered around the copper industry, Calumet and the surrounding areas displays a unique cross-section of cultures, architecture, industry, and history. The park is located in the middle of the Keweenaw Peninsula , which is surrounded by Lake Superior. Its only connection to the rest of Michigan's Upper Peninsula is the Portage Lift Bridge located between Houghton and Hancock. These were the richest deposits ever discovered. The mines played an important role in America's Industrial Revolution and performed a crucial mission by supplying copper for military equipment during the Civil War. Between 1867 and 1884 the Red Jacket shaft , at more than 8,000 feet in depth, was the deepest in the world. Calumet and Laurium rest on top of hundreds of miles of shafts, tunnels and drifts. Between 1845 and 1967, the copper mines on the peninsula produced 11 million pounds of copper.

Course Outline
GEOLOGY 3546 , Field Geology, is a 6-hour undergraduate or graduate 5-week course that begins on Monday, May 16, 2005 and ends June 17, 2005 Initial studies include familiarization with various rock types and regional stratigraphy through detailed measurement and description of stratigraphic sections. Geologic mapping exercises are conducted within 20 miles of the camp facilities. Topographic and aerial maps, air- photographs, GPS, and pace and Brunton traverses are employed on mapping exercises. Strong emphasis is placed on proper mapping techniques as well as structural and stratigraphic interpretations throughout the course. Projects will include environmental geology exercises within the area. A field trip is planned to a superfund site and environmental implications of mining will be examined. Other field trips will be conducted to geologically important areas, such as the Spanish Peaks , Great Sand Dunes, and the

Welcome to GEOS 102 Homepage! We live on a dynamic Earth a fact, emphasized in Geos. 101. Has the Earth changed since it formed? If so, how much, how fast, and what can we expect in the future? How did the Earth form? How old is the Earth? How did life evolve? Is life a geological force? How do mountains form? Have there always been continents? If not, how does continental crust form? Given your newly acquired knowledge of Earth materials, geologic processes and the plate tectonic model for the dynamic crust, we can now explore these questions by learning more about how geoscientists reconstruct Earth's geologic and life history by "reading" the rock and fossil record. T. S. Elliot said, "We shall not cease from exploration. The end of all our exploration will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time." The rock and fossil record allows us to "time travel" through much of Earth's history. The record is by no means complete. Nor has what we found, so far, been completely deciphered. Nevertheless, the way we perceive our planet has undergone some revolutionary and very exciting changes. To explore the past, we will need to better understand how Earth's processes operate today. As Earth's history becomes clearer, we can better appreciate what may be in store for us in the future. This is one of the fundamental themes for this course: THE PRESENT IS THE KEY TO THE PAST . . .
