A remarkable accomplishment of the human species is that its consciousness and its numbers are great enough to modify many of the immediate effects of climate and the land on human endeavors, for instance by the construction of shelters or the keeping of reserves. Yet climate and geology place constraints on human activity even today; beach erosion affects development, a summer hailstorm destroys crops. In order to explain the dynamic relations among weather, parent material, and biota, two very specific and important questions must be answered: the distance of a particular place from the poles and the equator (latitude), and its relation to the earth's water and land masses (the importance of longitude). Latitude reveals a number of things about climate (solar radiation intensity and transpiration rate, ambient temperature). Longitude fits the spot into the geological structures that constitute the earth's crust. Differential solar heating of the earth's various surfaces (e.g., land, water, ice) results in convection currents in the atmosphere, which differentially distribute warmth and moisture. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the dynamic relations between and among the environmental systems discussed in Chapter 2 (lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere) and the various cultures that have inhabited Burgundy since the Iron Age.

Class format will be lectures and discussions utilizing the text as a primary source with additional resources derived from other textbooks and the World Wide Web. Historical Geology is a time-sequence analysis of the Earth' s g eologic record based on rocks and fossils preserved in the outermost portions of the Earth. This analysis includes interpretation of physical and biological events throughout the history of the Earth. The lecture portion of the class will provide you with a basis for, and an appreciation of, the geologic methods used to unravel and interpret the historical rock record. The lab portion of this course is intended to give you hands-on familiarity with some of these geologic methods and the physical (rock) and biological (fossil) evidence utilized in the study of historical geology.

The Schramm course in economic geology includes field trips to classic geological locations. Recent trips have examined Death Valley and the Neogene basins of Coastal California, modern carbonate depositional environments in the Turks and Caicos Islands, British West Indies; and the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana. During the summer of 2004 faculty and students will examine the South Sydney basin and a portion of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Because these trips are funded by geology alumni, students do not have to pay for transportation or lodging.

Life through Time
Geology 011
Union College

The Earth and Life Through Time (Geology 011) is a survey of the history of the Earth in which the fundamental changes in the physical and biological world are discussed. Much of this course is designed around the basic principles of stratigraphy and sedimentology: without the stratigraphic record our understanding of the history of the earth would be quite limited. The approach to this course is to emphasize the methods, problems and ambiguity associated with studies of the Earth's history. To this end, considerable time is spent discussing competing hypotheses for different problems and ways in which geoscientests may solve those problems. The fundamentals learned in the first half of the course are integrated into several comprehensive exercises that bring together many basic principles of stratigraphy, sedimentology, structural geology, and tectonics. This course is designed as an introduction to sedimentary geology. Prequisites: None GenEd: Yes Offered: Winter, Annually

From its very beginning to the present, the Earth has undergone considerable physical, chemical and biologic change. This history can be read using various means from rocks and fossils accessible to us all. To study the history of the Earth is important not only because it helps us understand what processes and events have helped shape our planet's present physical and biologic make-up, but it can also help predict future events that may consequently affect humankind. This course is an introduction to the major events which had a profound impact on the changing physical and biologic landscape throughout Earth's history. The course will stress both theory and facts concerning the history of Earth and life, and more importantly, how we know it. The course is designed to give the student a broad perspective and appreciation of Earth's history and serve as a stepping-stone to more advanced courses in Earth Science.
