These short biographical and historical sketches were composed by the list owner from information in standard academic references such as the Dictionary of Scientific Biography , the Dictionary of National Biography , and the Biographical Dictionary of the Phonetic Sciences . They were intended to serve as starting points for Darwin-L discussion and as introductions to some of the leading figures in the various branches of the historical sciences . While entries relating to natural history predominate, the full scope of palaetiology is represented from evolutionary biology and phylogenetics to historical linguistics textual transmission archeology geology cosmology , and related academic fields . "The country is wild, rough and full of hardships for those unused to the rigors of Arctic winters. If a man makes a fortune he is liable to earn it by severe hardship and sufferings. But, then, grit, perseverance and luck will probably reward a hard worker with a comfortable income for life."

Clarence Berry , one of the miners returning on the Portland, quoted in The Seattle Post-lntelligencer, July 17,1897. With cries of "Gold! Gold in the Klondike!" there unfolded in the Yukon and Alaska an incredible historic adventure, whose theme of human endeavor in the face of adversity captured the imagination of people around the world. In August 1896 when George Washington Carmack and his two Indian companions, Skookum Jim and Tagish Charlie , found gold in a tributary of the Klondike River in Canada's Yukon Territory, they had no idea that they would set off one of the greatest gold rushes in history. True, most of the good claims were already staked by the time the rush really got underway in the summer of 1897; but this didn't stop an army of hopeful goldseekers from boarding ships at Seattle and other Pacific port cities and heading north to try their luck. Throughout the summer and autumn of 1897 and on into the winter, stampeders poured into the newly created Alaskan tent and shack towns of

    Death Valley National Park
    Overview

Death Valley National Park comprises more than 3.3 million acres of spectacular desert scenery, rare desert wildlife, complex geology, undisturbed wilderness and sites of historical interest. Death Valley is unique because it contains the lowest, hottest, driest location in North America. Nearly 550 square miles of its area lie below sea level. Ecologically, its plants and animals are representative of the Mojave Desert. Death Valley is one of the hottest places on earth, attaining the second-highest temperature ever recorded, 134 degrees F. in 1913. It contains the lowest point in the western hemisphere 282 feet below sea level near Badwater as well as numerous high-rising mountain peaks, including Telescope Peak at over 11,000 feet. Death Valley was named by gold-seekers, some of whom died crossing the valley during the 1849 California gold rush.

HISTORICAL GEOLOGY: EVOLUTION OF EARTH AND LIFE THROUGH TIME teaches students basic geologic principles as well as how scientists apply these principles to unravel Earth?s history. Wicander and Monroe present a balanced overview of both the geological and biological history of Earth as a continuum of inter-related events. These events reflect the underlying principles and processes that have shaped our planet. The authors also explain the The Earth Through Time
This best-selling historical geology text provides an excellent balance of basic geology and paleontology. The Earth Through Time, Seventh Edition, provides rich, authoritative coverage of the history of the Earth, offering the most comprehensive history in the discipline today. The Seventh Edition maintains its strong approach to stratigraphy and paleontology that other texts have lost, as well as including new Evolution of the Earth
Evolution of the Earth reveals the logical framework of geology, shows relations of the science to the totality of human knowledge, and gives some idea of what it is to be a participant in the discipline. In keeping with the preference for a "How do we know?" rather than "What do we know?" approach, the authors stress what assumptions are made by earth historians, what kinds of evidence (and tools for gathering that evidence), and what Earth System History
Everybody that is interested in historical geology and paleontology must have this book. It is clear with a lot of informations, has beautifull pictures and a fantastic CD ROM. One of the best I bought last year !

The deadliest earthquake of the 20th century
On July 28, 1976 at 3:42 am, an earthquake of magnitude 8.2 struck near the east coast of China. The epicenter was near Tangshan, an industrial city with a population of about 1 million people. (Yong et al., 1988). This quake's destruction was worsened by the fact that it struck in the middle of the night. Almost everyone in the city was asleep, and many people were probably crushed to death without even waking up. Many more who lay injured in the rubble died before they could be rescued. The quake knocked out power through the city, making rescue efforts by shocked residents of the city impossible in the dark. A smaller number of people were trapped in nearby coal mines. Many were rescued, but not until hours or days later (Yong, et al., 1988).
Officially, the Chinese government estimated between 240,000 and 250,000 people were killed (Yong et al., 1988). In the decades since the quake, the death toll is estimated closer to half a million. Either number would make this the most deadly quake in the twentieth century, and the strongest since the Alaska quake in 1964 which was of magnitude 8.4 (Bolt, 1993b).

UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON Department of Geosciences GEOL 1176: HISTORICAL GEOLOGY LABORATORY Welcome to the home page for GEOL 1176: Historical Geology Laboratory. GEOL 1176 is the optional, recommended laboratory course to accompany GEOL 1376: Historical Geology. The prerequisite is GEOL 1130: Physical Geology Laboratory. Historical Geology is the study of earth history. Historical Geology applies the principles and methods of the geological sciences and of the other natural sciences to the study of earth materials and processes, in order to reconstruct the history of the earth and of life on earth. In the Historical Geology Laboratory, students study rocks, fossils and maps to gain familiarity with geological methods and materials. The emphasis on problem solving leads to better understanding of the fundamental principles taught in the corresponding lecture course. GEOL 1376 is offered every semester as a face-to-face course. Attendance is required. For more information about this course, please attend the first class meeting, or e-mail Dr. Rosalie F. Maddocks RMaddocks@uh.edu
