The Isle of Portland is a notable and impressive place for geology, and with varied and contrasting scenary all within a small area. The top of the island ranges from fields, quarries, Admiralty buildings, small housing estates and interesting old villages and churches. The promontory is surrounded by excellent cliff exposures of Portland Stone, Purbeck strata and the top of the Kimmeridge Clay (as an example, the photograph above is of the cliffs south of Mutton Cove ). In the cliffs are raised beach deposits. From the cliffs to the centre of the "island" are numerous quarries, some working, many abandoned and these too provide excellent exposures. There are many interesting features such as fissures containing bones

Solent Bibliography - Topics Lepe Beach and Stone Point ... New Forest Geology Bibliography
The bibliography is on the geology etc relating to the Solent Estuarine System. These estuaries are near the centre of the south coast of southern England. They include Southampton Water, the West Solent, the Spithead, Portsmouth Harbour, Langstone Harbour and Chichester Harbour and several minor estuaries. The largest city in the area is Southampton, although Portsmouth is also large. The Solent and Spithead separate the Isle of Wight from the Hampshire mainland. The strata under the estuaries are mainly Tertiary (Palaeocene, Eocene and Oligocene) with Pleistocene and Holocene deposits above. Cretaceous Chalk cliffs are present on the Isle of Wight at the Needles in the west and Culver Cliff in the East. These Chalk headlands form effective limits to the estuaries. This first part of the bibliography is an introductory section of selected references in a continuous list, undivided. It continues as a bibliography arranged under topics, with an index. The first part, this page, is at present more up-to-date, and the second part will be revised when time permits.

Strategic Plan

History and General Operations General Information Strategic Geologic Mapping The Mined Land Regulation and Reclamation Program (MLRR) Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources ... DOGAMI Staff General Information
The most widely recognized product of the department is the creation of geologic maps. These maps are valuable tools for a variety of uses, including describing the general geology and geologic history of an area, locating potential mineral resources, identifying geologic hazards, and providing essential information for groundwater studies.
The ongoing scientific study of hazards and the information generated from those studies is also important in helping Oregonians understand the risks faced from earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides and other hazards. This information is shared through traditional paper maps, digital maps, academic reports, exhibits, workshops, conferences, websites, and public presentations.
DOGAMI has also helped develop important partnerships and programs among business, industry, local government and citizens to help reduce the risk Oregonians face from natural hazards. Oregon has been designated a "Showcase State" by the Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) because of our efforts in understanding and mitigating our hazards.
Geologic hazards
Effective preparation for chronic and catastrophic geologic hazards requires knowledge and understanding of local geology and geologic processes. As part of this hazards mitigation program, the department studies and maps geologic hazards, informs governments and the public about the hazards, and works actively to reduce future loss of life and property.

Environmental Geology
Understanding the rocks and soils which form the geologic environment is necessary to properly assess the condition and remediate a contaminated site and make sound decisions regarding storage or isolation of wastes. Just as the physical, chemical and hydrological properties of soil and rock vary across the landscape and into the ground, so also will the location and "fate and transport" of contaminants vary, as will as the conditions for site remediation or storage. This information sheet first lists those categories and words that provide a general framework and context for understanding geology: It then lists terms within more specific categories:
General Terms
Bedrock:
Rock which is still in place in the ground. That is, rock which has not been eroded or broken apart from its original state.
Geophysics:
The study of the earth and underground phenomena using the methods of physics that yield measurable results. Methods may include seismic, gravity, magnetic, electrical, electromagnetic, radiometric and geothermal.

http://www.calvin.edu/academic/geology/prospect/michgeol.htm
General Geology of Michigan Michigan is unique among the states in that it is divided into two areas geographically, the Northern and Southern Peninsulas, and in that, to a considerable degree, these two geographical provinces are geologically separate and distinct. This geological dichotomy is not absolute, inasmuch as the eastern part of the Northern Peninsula is geologically similar to parts of the Southern Peninsula. The western part of the Northern Peninsula is underlain by rocks of Precambrian and Cambrian age. In contrast, underlying rocks of the eastern Northern Peninsula and the entire Southern Peninsula are younger (Ordovician to Pennsylvanian) in age. In addition to this broad split, Michigan geology also is characterized by a major horizontal break-bedrock geology vs. surficial geology. Much of the state is veneered by deposits of Pleistocene age, the results of glacial and glaciofluvial depositional processes. These sediments are unconsolidated tills, gravels, sands, silts, and clays. They effectively mask much of the bedrock geology, particularly in the Southern Peninsula. With a few exceptions, the spectacular metallic mineral deposits for which Michigan is justly famous occur in rocks of Precambrian age. The younger Paleozoic rocks are by no means devoid of mineral deposits or occurrences, but their variety is smaller and their mineral assemblages are more severely restricted. Only a very few inconsequential mineral occurrences appear in the Pleistocene blanket.
