It has a 15 year history (since 1986) of commitment to educating students in geology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Research advances made by faculty and students within the department have made significant contributions to many areas of Earth Science including: Engineering Geology ,Tectonic , Sedimentology , Structural Geology , Soil Mechanics , Earthquake , and Petrology. The Department of Geology offers undergraduate degree programs leading to B.Sc. degree in Geology and petrology . This department also offers graduate programs leading to M.Sc. degree in Engineering Geology and Sedimentology. At present, this department has 15 full-time faculty members who have graduated from different universities around the world. More than 400 students are currently enrolled in the department, 34of whom are studying at M.Sc. level. The department has a chairman who administrate department. The chairman of department is elected by faculty members' votes for two years.

Page last updated Georgia's River Basins Georgia's Geology Georgia's Climate Altamaha River Basin Georgia's Geology Physiographic Provinces s Map of Provinces Georgia's Aquifers General Interest Site Geology is the study of the Earth, the materials it is made of, the changes that have taken place since its origin, and the processes that caused those changes. Rivers are affected by the geology and topography of the areas they flow through, because the slope of the land and the soil and rocks determine how fast water flows, how much of it soaks into the ground, how much runs into river and stream channels, and how quickly the rocks and soil erode. The eroded soil and rock are carried downstream until they settle out in a calm stretch of the river or until they reach the ocean. Water which soaks into the ground enters the groundwater system, and may help recharge one of the aquifers underlie the surface soil.

GENERAL MORPHOLOGY The wide range in size and form of the exoskeleton of the trilobite naturally leads to speculation on function, on how a particular morphology was related to the mode of life.
Museum and may not be copied for commercial purposes. Permission to copy is granted for personal and educational use only. All such copies must include this http://www.geology.wisc.edu/~museum/triloinfo.html Trilobites were generally small creatures, around 2-7 cm long although some extreme sizes have been found from 3 mm to 70 cm. An exact symmetry was formed along the axis of their exoskeleton which encased the soft body. It was beneath the axis that the digestive tract was positioned (Whittington, 1992). The segmented exoskeleton allowed articulation of the body and also carried segmented appendages. Some of these appendages were differentiated to serve a variety of specialized functions e.g. claws, elongate spines. The segments located within the cephalon are seen to be segmented together and in some extreme cases are fused. A modern day example although not a trilobite is the horseshoe crab which has its segments fused from the head/cephalon to the thorax creating a solid shield, the "cephalo-thorax" shield (Whittington, 1992). Trilobites interacted with the environment by a number of sensory organs such as the antennulae and single or compound eyes situated upon the cephalon. The eyes of the trilobites in some cases developed surprising complexity and optimization of function (Levi-Setti, 1975).

General Information History Staff For the Entrants Training Courses ... Publications Head of the department - professor O.V.Yapaskurt.
Department of Lithology and Marine Geology unites two laboratories: Laboratory of Lithology and Facial Analysis and Laboratory of Marine Geology , there is a branch in Geological Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences The training of the students is carried out on educational direction 011100 "Geology", the department lets out the bachelors and diplomaed experts in specializations 011104 "Lithology" and 011105 "Marine Geology".
Best of the graduates have an opportunity to be trained in Master course on Master programs 511002 "Lithology" and 511003 "Geology of seas and oceans", and also in post-graduate course on a speciality "Lithology".
Specialized practices are organized: lithological - in Crimea (at the MSU educational base), Taman, Voronezh region and practice on marine geology - in Baltic. The scientific activity of the department as a whole corresponds to a priority scientific direction of the faculty "Composition, structure, geodynamics and evolution of the lithosphere".
The basic direction of scientific researches - "Sedimentary basins; continental and marine sedimentary processes and their evolution". The financing of works is carried out by the grants from Russian Fund of Fundamental Researches, Ministry of Education of Russian Federation and contracts with the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russian Federation. The department does not disregard applied tasks within the framework of a developed scientific direction, which decision serves an additional source of financing.

GeoRef The GeoRef database, established by the American Geological Institute (AGI) in 1966, provides access to the geoscience literature of the world. GeoRef is the most comprehensive AGI database in the geosciences and continues to grow by more than 60,000 references a year. The database contains over 2.2 million references to geoscience journal articles, books, maps, conference papers, reports and theses. The GeoRef database covers the geology of North America from 1785 to the present and the geology of the rest of the world from 1933 to the present. The database includes references to all publications of the U.S. Geological Survey. Masters' theses and doctoral dissertations from US and Canadian universities are also covered. To maintain the database, GeoRef editor/indexers regularly scan more than 3,500 journals in 40 languages as well as new books, maps, and reports. They record the bibliographic data for each document and assign index terms to describe it. Each month between 4,000 and 7,000 new references are added to the database and also printed in the Bibliography and Index of Geology A subscription to the GeoRef database also includes access to the GeoRef In Process database (so both databases can be searched at once) and a link to the GeoRef Preview database on the AGI web site.

Acid Rain and Our Nation's Capital
http://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/acidrain/
This booklet focuses on acid rain and its impact on our Nation's capital. Rain in Washington, D.C., has an average acidity of 4.2, about as acid as a carbonated drink and more than ten times as acid as clean, unpolluted rain. This booklet will define acid rain, explain what effects it has on marble and limestone buildings, and show, on a walking tour, some of the places in our Nation's capital where you can see the impact of acid precipitation.
