For books about the Whitmans and Columbia Plateau peoples.
This site commemorates the courage of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, the role the Whitmans played in establishing the Oregon Trail, and the challenges encountered when two different cultures meet. In 1836, before the wagon trains, a small intrepid group of Presbyterian missionaries traveled with the annual fur trapper’s caravan into “Oregon Country.” Missionaries Narcissa Whitman and Eliza Spalding became the first white women to travel across the continent. Differences in culture led to growing tensions between the Cayuse people and the Whitmans. Their mission became an important stop along the Oregon Trail, but passing immigrants added to the tension. A measles outbreak in 1847 killed half the local Cayuse. Some of the Cayuse blamed these deaths on Dr. Whitman. Dr. and Mrs. Whitman were killed; sixty people were taken hostage. The deaths of the Whitmans sent a shock wave across the country and prompted Congress to make Oregon a U.S. territory. Whitman Mission is located in SE Washington, 7 miles west of Walla Walla, just off Hwy. 12.

The Mojave Desert
The transition from the hot Sonoran Desert to the cooler and higher Great Basin is called the Mojave Desert. This arid region of southeastern California and portions of Nevada, Arizona and Utah, occupies more than 25,000 square miles. On the northwestern boundary it extends from the Sierra Nevada range to the Colorado Plateau in the east; it abuts the San Gabriel-San Bernardino mountains in the southwest. Near the Great Basin-Mojave border lies Death Valley, the lowest point in North America and a national park. The Mojave's desert climate is characterized by extreme variation in daily temperature and an average annual precipitation of less than 5 inches. Almost all the precipitation arrives in winter. Freezing temperatures occur in winter, while summers are hot, dry and windy. The Mojave has a typical mountain-and-basin topography with sparse vegetation. Sand and gravel basins drain to central salt flats from which borax, potash and salt are extracted. Silver, tungsten, gold and iron deposits are worked. While some do not consider the Mojave a desert in its own right, the Mojave Desert hosts about 200 endemic plant species found in neither of the adjacent deserts.Cactus are usually restricted to the coarse soils of bajadas. A spectrum of course-work and thesis-related degrees designed for full-time (1-2 year) and part-time (2-3 year) candidates wishing to further their skills in the broad field of mineral resources. A variety of postgraduate M.Sc. courses in Exploration Geology and Economic Geology are on offer. The programme has been running since 1978 and is one of the longest standing of its kind. Curricula range from course-work dominated programmes to straight thesis studies. They are intended for a variety of candidates from practising industry geologists through to research students. Attendance is either on a part-time or full-time basis. Currently, the entire programme is presented each year allowing maximum flexibility for part-time students. Completion of the course-work component can be achieved within a period of nine months by full-time students. Workshops are conducted by specialists from industry and other universities as well as by the staff of the Geology Department at Rhodes University. Extensive field trips to southern Africa's renowned mineral deposits form an integral part of the programme.

What is radon? Radon is a radioactive gas that has no smell, taste, or color. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all rock and soil. When geologic conditions are favorable, the potential increases for high indoor levels of radon. If radon is natural, why is it a hazard? Outdoor radon levels never reach dangerous concentrations because air movement scatters radon into the atmosphere. Radon is a hazard in buildings because the gas collects in enclosed spaces. What conditions must be present for high indoor-radon levels? Four conditions must be present. The building must:
  • be built on ground that contains sufficient uranium.
  • have underlying soil that allows easy movement of radon.
  • have porous building materials, cracks, or other openings below the ground surface that allow radon from soil to enter the building.
  • have a lower air pressure inside than in the soil around the foundation.

    General Information Geology is the science of the Earth. In its broadest sense, geology concerns itself with planetary formation and subsequent modification, with emphasis on the study of planet Earth. Geologists study Earth's internal and surficial structure and materials, the chemical and physical processes acting within and on the Earth, and utilize the principles of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology to understand our planet and its environments. Geological Studies encompass all the physical, chemical and biological aspects of Earth. Increasingly, geologists are taking a holistic approach in the collection and interpretation of data about the Earth, which means that the wider context of the geological sciences is broad and diverse. In studying the Earth as a system, we are concerned with geology and geophysics, hydrology, oceanography and marine science, meteorology and atmospheric science, planetary science, and soil science. A major in any relevant discipline can lead to a satisfying career within the geological sciences. In general, graduate training is expected for advancement to the most rewarding positions and for academic employment. Geologists are employed by governmental, industrial and academic organizations. Geologists work in exploration for new mineral and hydrocarbon resources, as consultants on engineering and environmental projects, as teachers and researchers in universities, and in many other challenging positions. For many, the attraction of a career in geology is the ability to divide time between work in the field, the laboratory and the office. Although the employment outlook within geology varies with the global economic climate, the long-range outlook is good. This is because our dwindling energy, mineral and water resources, along with increasing concerns about natural hazards and environmental issues, present new challenges for geologists.

    1.0 Introduction
    The University is subject to Health and Safety requirements in order to protect members against any hazards which are present within the University and to mitigate against injury or illness resulting from foreseeable hazardous situations. As part of this process, the Department is required to develop a Health and Safety policy so as to ensure correct and safe behaviour during Departmental activities. This policy applies to all students as well as to employees of the University.
    Health and Safety issues within the University are overseen by the University Health and Safety Officer ( Ms Andrea McMillan ). Areas designated laboratories are overseen by the University Laboratory Manager (Dr Wayne Temple).

    All chemicals used in the Department are to be purchased through the correct channels, stored and used under strict safety procedures, and disposed of in approved manner.
